General Blue's 'Dock'?
As I said in my last topic, I'm watching through the DB anime right now, much of which is for the first time. Now, in the General Blue section of the story, Blue divides his forces into two units, the second of which is to attack Kame House. He puts his fat, Heinrich Himmler-looking officer in charge of B-squad. However, in the anime, I was surprised to find him refer to this person as "Dock". So I'm curious. Is this another example of a character receiving a name in the TV series that lacked one in the manga (a la Mai or Sno), or does he have this name in the manga too, and Viz just omitted it? I'm fairly sure it's the former, but I wanted to make sure.

That is correct. Although he appears in the manga, he is never called by name. However, his name is mentioned and credited in the anime.

From the notes I gathered on this from this site, which I think were wrote by Herms or Hujio via the Daizenshu:
Dock
The fat member of Blue’s corps, who leads the attack on Kame House. He’s only named in the anime. Apparently he’s named after “dock”, in keeping with the water setting of the Blue arc.
Source Spelling: ドック/dokku
Name Spelling: same

Re: General Blue's 'Dock'?
I remember one episode of the FUNimation Dub referring to him as "Lieutenant" and then another episode referring to him as "Captain Dark". I guess they made those up. It would've been nice if they maintained consistency since "Lieutenant" and "Captain" are not the same rank. There was also a rumor a few years ago that his real name was Lieutenant Green. Does anyone remember that?

He was called Green in the Funimation dub.

Ah how very interesting. I'm in the midst of watching Dragon Ball with the wife so this is a great tidbit of information to be aware of as we watch.

They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

It's really weird that I actually remember this, when I haven't watched this episode dubbed since it aired on Toonami, and I've seen the Japanese version within the last two years, but don't remember him being called "Dock."Limienerd wrote:He was called Green in the Funimation dub.

...Green? He was called "Dark" in the season sets.

He was referred to by General Blue as "Lieutenant" in one episode and as "Captain Dark" in another (FUNimation Dub). I think Green was an internet rumor. It's interesting that 2 of the posters on this thread genuinely believe his name was Green!Shnuki wrote:...Green? He was called "Dark" in the season sets.

Re: General Blue's 'Dock'?
I'm guessing "Dark" in the Funimation dub was sort of a half-translation/half-change of his Japanese name. Not a direct translation (dokku/Dock vs. daaku/Dark... not quite the same... but daaku would probably sound more like how an English-speaker pronounces "dock" than dokku would), but sort of a Tenshinhan vs. Tien Shinhan type name-change.
Re: General Blue's 'Dock'?
About the name change - maybe FUNi wanted him to have a name that is consistent with the rest of the soldiers? "Dark" can be a shade of most of the colors
Are there any other Red Ribbon Army soldiers that aren't named after a color/a shade of a color? Because I don't remember.

Well "lieutenant" can be a word simply meaning "second-in-command" sometimes.ShinRogafuken wrote:I remember one episode of the FUNimation Dub referring to him as "Lieutenant" and then another episode referring to him as "Captain Dark".
