As you may dimly recall, a little while back I declared my intention to spend the rest of the year updating and expanding upon the Strength Checker so that it incorporates stuff from the anime, movies, guidebooks, and any other thing I feel like throwing in. Several nice people volunteered to help with this, but I got caught up with one thing or another, never got back to anybody, and now it's the start of February, my arbitrary deadline for beginning this project. But instead of pushing the start back, I figured I might as well just put up some kind of rough draft that I can improve on later. Thinking it over, I probably won't be able to finish this project within the year, but I do intend to post something new every Monday, so I can just chip away at it.
Anyways, today we begin at the beginning, with an overview of the "search for the dragon balls" story arc and...kinda the first half of the "training" mini-story arc. Basically, everything up until when Goku and Kuririn start getting really strong through their training. Then next time I'll take a look at their "post-training" strength and the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai. Actually, before moving on to that, I'll probably cover DB movies 1 and 2.
This idea here is to create something that sums up all the stuff said in the Strength Checker in a hopefully marginally less tedious to read format, and adds wordless "feats", fight results, and stuff from outside the manga. Commentary in brackets.

Kame-sennin: “Mumu…! Kuririn’s drawn pretty close to the human wall…!”

Goku: “Ow…owwy…! You jerk…! I’m not gonna lose to the likes of you!”
Kame-sennin: “Y…you don’t even hold back against women…What a simple guy…”

Kuririn: “H…he…he moved it further than Lord Muten Roshi…”
Chapter: 31, P10.3

The sweet and innocent daughter of the fearsome Gyumao, she makes her debut here fleeing in terror from a T-Rex [a habit her son inherits]. After running a bit though, she finally just throws the blade on her helmet at the beast boomerang-style, decapitating it on the spot. But the dino's corpse freaks her out more, so she disintegrates it with a laser beam she fires from her helmet. Watching this spectacle, Yamcha and Puar are taken aback at the contrast between her scaredy-cat personality and the powerful attacks she dishes out. When Chi-Chi attacks him next, Yamcha manages to dodge her laser beam, and knocks her out with one double-handed blow to the head [that helmet seems better at offense than defense]. Later she throws her helmet blade at Kame-sennin's back to test him out...and nails him square in the forehead after he spins around and makes a fancy-looking attempt to deflect it [so...is the blade-erang faster than the laser beam, or are Yamcha's reflexes faster than Kame-sennin's? Actually, the key difference is probably that Yamcha's facing her when she fires the beam, while she chocks the blade at Kame-sennin's back. Also, you know, gag scene.]
[We know that Chi-Chi learns martial arts by the 23rd TB, but it's not clear if she's started yet, since all her attacks here rely on the remarkably powerful weapons in her helmet.]

Kame-sennin's former #2 pupil, second only to Son Gohan. A giant of a man, he's so fearsomely strong that people call him the "emperor of devils". Has the bad habit of killing everyone who comes after his treasure, probably with the giant axe he tosses around. Oolong believes he's on a far different level than Goku, and even Goku says the guy "really looks strong". Still, Gyumao humbly kowtows to his old master Kame-sennin.
In his Adventure Special interview, Toriyama responds to a question about why Gyumao can’t use the Kamehameha. He says this deficiency is because “Gyumao is the type who relies on power more than techniques, and also perhaps because he wasn’t quite good enough [to master it]”.

Spoiler:
The crazy old guy who Goku and Bulma meet at the beach doesn't seem like anything special at first, but he soon turns out to be the "Muten Roshi", a legendary figure known to all martial artists worldwide, who Kuririn declares to be the best in the world. He rarely takes pupils, but long ago he trained the famous martial artist Son Gohan, and the infamous ne'er-do-well Gyumao.
His grand technique is the "Kamehameha", where he condenses the "latent energy" within his body and fires it out in one burst ["ki" as such isn't mentioned yet at this point]. When firing the blast, he first bulks up from his regular scrawny form and becomes a hulking muscleman [he does the same when firing his "Max Power" Kamehameha during the 21st TB, but never again. This musclebound transformation is intriguingly similar to the Super Saiyan "Grade" forms; perhaps it shares SSj Grade III's slowness, which may explain why he never uses it against, say, Piccolo]. He uses the technique to put out Mt. Frypan's fire, but puts too much force into it and so also blows away Gyumao's castle and the entire mountain right along with it. He tells Goku that it takes 50 years of training to learn the Kamehameha [so presumably that's how long it took him].
He normally goes around wearing a silly-looking turtle shell, but he takes this off to sprint 100 meters [so it's probably weighted like the ones he gives Goku and Kuririn]. He runs 100 meters in 5.6 seconds, which he says is a result of "overcoming the human" [ie regular human limitations]. Despite the fast feet, he still comically fails to dodge or deflect Chi-Chi's helmet blade, angrily telling her "even I can't dodge that fast!" Undaunted, he still claims that "nothing is impossible for Muten Roshi!" [what a dope]

Spoiler:
A young boy who started learning martial arts to become popular with girls, he's spent the last 8 years studying at Oorin Temple [and he's only 13!], an obvious parody of China's famous Shaolin Temple. Besides wearing stereotypical Shaolin-style robes at this point, he shaves his head in order to "tighten" his ki, a common practice among martial artists [Tenshinhan presumably does this too]. Hearing about his prior training, Kame-sennin says Kuririn should be "capable of the general basics" in regards to martial arts.
Still, Kuririn doesn't consider himself good enough to take on two armed policemen, and is terrified when a saber-tooth tiger comes after him...yet he still dodges the tiger's attack and knocks it out with an elbow drop [so he's obviously skilled, but confidence issues seem to be holding him back]. He's absolutely no match for Goku in a fight, though he seems to do better than the random thugs Goku has fought up to now [most of the fight is just depicted as a cartoonish cloud with arms and legs sticking out though, so it's hard to tell].
Kuririn seems to have more confidence in his running skills than his fighting skills. He brags that he has "legs good enough for the Olympics", and that his personal best time for the 100 meter sprint is 10.1 seconds, though he just manages 10.4 seconds here. Kame-sennin tells him he still needs to overcome "the human wall" to become a "complete martial artist", but since he's still young he might eventually be able to break 5 seconds "depending on [his] training". According to Kame-sennin, Kuririn draws "pretty close" to the human wall later when Lunch is chasing him around with a knife [in other words, he runs faster when properly motivated].

Spoiler:
While this female Jekyll-and-Hyde seems no stronger than a typical young lady while in her “nice” form, in her blonde form she’s able to keep up with (Olympic-caliber sprinter) Kuririn, and later on in the RR arc she beats up macho-men soldiers with relative ease. She’s good with guns, knives, and various other weapons, and can keep a pair of policemen at bay. According to the anime, she has a bounty of 2 million zenny [say, what’s the zenny-beri conversion rate these days?]. Sadly, Goku doesn’t hold back against women, and knocks her out with one kick when she shoots at him [most of the time though, Kame-sennin/Kuririn/Goku act terrified of Lunch in her “mean form”, even though Kame-sennin and Goku at least ought to be immune to such mundane threats as knives and bullets. It’s classic gag scene logic].

A young piglet who formally attended the Southern Shape-Shifting Kindergarten, but was expelled after stealing one of his teacher's panties. As a result, he has incomplete shape-shifting powers: though he can change into seemingly anything, he can only stay transformed for 5 minutes at a time, after which he must rest for 1 minute. Worse yet, only his form ever changes, rather than his power. So even if he turns into a giant ogre or a bad-ass robot, he's still no stronger than your average pig, and becoming a motorcycle doesn't make him able to hold up Bulma's weight. Still, turning into a bat or a rocket gives him the ability to fly, and his rocket form seems pretty fast. He uses his limited talents to keep several villages under his thumb, by turning into various powerful-looking monsters so that everyone's too scared to try and oppose him. As part of the act he claims to be the strongest in the world, but even a little kid's slingshot and hot soup causes him considerable pain.

Goku's adopted grandfather just so happens to be a world-famous martial arts master, said to be unsurpassed in every form of martial arts. Even Oolong (presumably no martial arts buff) has heard of him. Back in the day he was Kame-sennin's #1 disciple, and trained alongside Gyumao. He received the Nyoibo staff from Kame-sennin, and apparently used it quite a lot, since Yamcha and Gyumao both quickly realize Goku's connection to Gohan when they see he has the Nyoibo.
Sometime before the series began, he warned Goku never to look at the full moon, knowing that this caused the boy to turn into a giant monkey monster. But sadly, he was killed by Oozaru Goku after Goku slipped up and looked at the full moon one night [so presumably at the time of his death he was weaker than Oozaru Goku, though it's possible he couldn't emotionally bring himself to fight Goku at full power and died as a result of pulling his punches too much]. Yamcha is amazed that any monster could kill a master like Son Gohan.

Spoiler:
An idiot monkey-butted freak Bulma finds out in the mountains. He was "toughened up" and taught kung-fu by his adopted grandfather, famous martial artist Son Gohan. With one mighty kick he can smash big chunks of wood into conveniently-sized logs, or take down giant carnivorous fish. His kung-fu training allows him to smash 3 bricks with just one finger, and with a bear hug he can break a boulder several times his size into pieces (his idea of morning exercise). Still, his punches don't dent the stone walls of Pilaf's castle, and he can't jump through the "super-strengthened" glass roof of Pilaf's prison cell. After seeing a bit of what Goku's capable of, Kame-sennin says it looks like Gohan "really toughened him up", and later says Goku and Kuririn "should be capable of the general basics" in regards to martial arts.
Goku is accustomed to hunting bears and tigers for his daily bread (so to speak). He's pretty good fighting with his Nyoibo staff, using its long range to kill a big pteranodon. His trademark attack at this point is the "Jan-Ken" [Rock-Paper-Scissors Attack], which he uses to take out the giant bear bandit guy in one hit, after agilely dodging the bandit's swinging sword. He easily defeats armed men like the Rabbit Gang thugs or the policemen chasing Lunch by dodging their shots, knocking the guns from their hands, and just generally beating the crap out of them with a hit or two. Bad Lunch manages to shoot him a few times, but undeterred he takes her out with a kick (as Kame-sennin notes, Goku is too simple-minded to hold back against woman).
Though it's taken for granted that Kame-sennin (and probably Gyumao) are stronger than Goku at this point, he never fights them, and so his only formidable opponent in this story arc is Yamcha. After getting hit with the Nyoibo and learning of Goku's connection to Son Gohan, Yamcha declares him to be his "first challenge in a long time" and nails him with his patented Roga-FuFu-Ken attack, which sends him crashing straight through several rock formations. Goku gets back up after a little while though and returns fire with his Jan-Ken, which likewise sends Yamcha flying but doesn't take him out, and the fight is interrupted by Bulma. Though the two seem fairly even during this first fight, Goku says it's simply because he was hungry, meaning he couldn't put much power into his Jan-Ken. For his rematch his Yamcha the next day he has a full stomach, and manages to block or dodge all Yamcha's attacks before knocking one of his teeth out with a kick. After this, Yamcha decides Goku is too strong to fight directly. Goku also gets Kuririn to say "uncle" without much effort.
After seeing Kame-sennin's Kamehameha, Goku is able to imitate it on the spot, producing a small blast that smashes up Bulma's car. This despite the fact that Kame-sennin says it takes 50 years of training to acquire the technique [and people think Gotenks reaching SSj3 is bad]. The Daizenshuu 7 entry on the Kamehameha says this fast pickup is possibly due to him having done ki training with his grandpa Gohan. Besides car-busting, he also uses the Kamehameha to blow open a small hole in the stone walls of Pilaf's castle after his punches prove ineffective. But as Goku himself says, he still doesn't have much practice with the technique, and so his version still doesn't hold a candle to Kame-sennin's. It can't even scratch the steel walls of Pilaf's prison cell.
Getting shot in the head by Bulma's gun causes Goku a lot of pain, but he's quickly back on his feet and seems to suffer no long-term damage, claiming that his body is forged like stainless steel [Bulma fires this gun with one hand, so it's probably not all that powerful, gun-wise; as late as the RR arc it’s taken for granted that Goku can’t survive a shotgun blast at point blank range]. Lunch's bullets likewise merely hurt him, causing no real injury. An axe wielded by an adult man simply breaks on Goku's head, though this also causes him a bit of pain [Goku seems to spend a lot of these early chapters clutching his head in pain].
He's able to pick up and toss Bulma's small-ish car with some effort, smashing it up, and considers the car "weak" as a result. He can even push a giant rock farther than Kame-sennin, but is unable to budge the even more gigantic rock Kame-sennin selects next (Kame-sennin claims this is because he's "completely lacking in training").
Goku at first sprints 100 meters in 11 seconds, but it turns out his shoes were extremely worn out. Wearing proper shoes, he makes it in 8.5 seconds. Kame-sennin considers this "absurdly" fast, but only from a "human level", and says that Goku will have to overcome the human wall to become a "complete martial artist". Since they're young, Kame-sennin believes Goku and Kuririn might be able to break 5 seconds "depending on [their] training". Unsurprising in light of this, Goku says Bulma's motorcycle goes much faster than he can run [100 meters in 8.5 seconds is about 26 mph, so not much compared to a motorcycle going full tilt].
Daizenshuu 7 puts his battle power at 10, saying he has “twice the power of an ordinary person” [an obvious reference to Farmer with a Shotgun and his BP of 5]. It adds that “what’s more, his body is tough enough to repel a gun bullet” [implying that battle power is distinct from general body toughness, I suppose].
His big weakness: he loses his power whenever anyone squeezes his tail. Speaking of which...
--Oozaru Goku--
For some ridiculous reason, Goku transforms into a giant monkey monster whenever he looks at the full moon, losing control of himself and rampaging around indiscriminately. Even the martial arts master Son Gohan was crushed to death by Goku in this state. Goku also smashed up Gohan's house and some trees at the time. Transforming into an Oozaru inside Pilaf's prison cell, Goku smashes through the prison's 300-mm steel walls and super-strengthened glass ceiling, even though Goku's Kamehameha couldn't dent the walls earlier, and the glass roof is supposedly impervious to cannon fire. Goku proceeds to tear Pilaf's entire castle apart King Kong-style, but he freezes up when Yamcha grabs his tail. Puar is then able to turn into a pair of scissors and cut his tail off, returning him to normal.
According to Vegeta later on, a Saiyan's battle power increases ten-fold when they become Oozaru. Going by that, Daizenshuu 7 pegs Goku's BP in this form as 100, and notes that he has the “destructive power of a battleship’s main gun”.
Spoiler:
At the height of his power and glory here, Yamcha is the only character to give Goku a particularly tough fight during these first few chapters, though even then it's only when Goku is hungry and so not at full power. During their first fight he sends Goku flying with his trademark Roga-FuFu-Ken attack, but for the rematch Goku has a full stomach and blocks the attack. Getting kicked in the face by Goku, Yamcha loses a tooth and decides he better lay low for the rest of the series. Still, later at the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku describes Yamcha as "super-duper strong", saying that when they fought he "moved so fast I couldn’t see him!" He has better luck against non-Goku people, taking down the Rabbit Gang thugs with one hit each (though Goku had already roughed them up earlier as well).
Yamcha's Roga-Fufu-Ken is powerful enough to send Goku crashing through some stone formations out in the desert, but his punches have no effect on the stone walls of Pilaf's castle, or the steel walls of his prison cell.
