Now would be a great time for someone to take Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" routine and slather the audio over footage of Piccolo or Vegeta speaking.

Which is exactly how old I feel listening to that. Man, I love Blink.

On the other hand, all swearing in Dragon Ball could be replaced with, "Unicorn!" ;)

Or it could be like in Budokai where everyone shouts out "you meanie!".

If we're talking Budokai's colossal piss-take of a translation...

That translation literally makes me a little depressed. I know the standards were low back then but this is like...Superman 64 bad.

Well between that and the Big Green dub, I'd say we Brits got the third-rate DBZ fix every time.

...Wait, what? I know I haven't played Budokai in forever...but...the American version didn't have 'Aunt Sallies' surely, did it? I don't remember that, and even at my height of loving the dub, there's no way I would have not given them crap for that one.

God that's a scene I wanted to force to the back of my mind and never remember. It's almost as if it was translated into fractured English. Mind you it's more tame than if was a fan dub.

I remember owning the old Big Green dubs back when I was a kid. I was so glad when they started airing the Funimation dub, you really have to see something terrible to appreciate the alternative.

I'm guessing its a regional translation thing, because heres the same bit from the Budokai HD collection.

Yeah, the 'aunt sallies' thing is from the European version, in which the translators butchered it worse than the average 4Kids production. Is that Budokai HD screenshot taken from the American or European version?

Considering how you said your translation is the European version and the screenshots are the same, I think its safe to say this is the American version I got the screenshot of.

I see. I remember in the European version of Budokai HD, they didn't even upscale the font to HD in some sentences, so the dialogue was likely unchanged. I'm actually glad FUNimation exists so at least some people didn't have to put up with the shite I got shovelled as a child.

Oh thank Kami. I was seriously about to rush back over and pop in my copy to see if I had just mentally blockaded that stuff out of my brain or something. I mean, 'Why don't you put a cork in that big mouth of yours?!' is hardly writing brilliance, but anything's better than 'aunt sallies'. Gah.

That and the 'Com'on' seemed a little suspect too, at least coming from Vegeta. Seems more of a Goku contraction.

I can't even believe Atari/Bandai (or whoever was the DBZ game licensor in 2002) let that past the radar, and yet it still sold over 400k in Europe alone. At least I can imagine the American line coming from Vegeta, if only Sabat or Drummond's Vegeta (sounds a bit OOC from Horikawa's).

"Damn", "hell", and "bastard" are fine (in my opinion) in their uses for the series.

"Shit" (and "piss") work but in limited amounts and in the right situations. Using them in the Dragon Ball series can work (and did in Kai), but they shouldn't be used as the go to translation for certain things like, say, Cowboy Bebop.

Not including movies, I can't see "fuck" or "cock" working in Dragon Ball. MAYBE if Vegeta got mad enough, I could see him screaming "FUCK YOU" as he was transforming into a Super Saiyan if Bulma died or something unbelievably traumatic in that vein, but that's like an extreme case.

"Bitch" . . . In ten years, ask me again. Ten years ago, I'd say hell no. Today, I can see it being okay, but not even close to being the best thing to use in any Dragon Ball media. "Bitch" is a word that is, rather quickly, losing its edge in mass media. It's almost to the point where I'm wondering why some channels still bleep the word. BUT, "bitch" is still at a point where I just can't see it for a series as . . . "tame" isn't the word I'm looking for, but I can't think of anything else that comes close to fitting it that well.

I think PG movies can get away with saying shit if it's used once. I'm okay with them saying "shit" in the dub if they use it once. In Japan, it might be different since Japan has different TV rules for their kids shows. I remember Midnight Crew subs for Kamen Rider Kuuga had a character say fuck and Kamen Rider is market for kids in Japan. In America, they would never allow a f bomb in a kids show.
