How does one become King of Earth?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

How does one become King of Earth?

Post by Mr. Piccolo » Tue Feb 11, 2014 12:44 pm

My understanding of the way government works in the Dragon World is that the Earth is united under one government headed by the King of the World. The only King we see in the story is that dog fellow Piccolo Daimao topples when he usurps the throne of Earth.

Does anybody know how one becomes the King of the World? Is there an election or is it hereditary? Any information or speculation on this matter?

I thought the dog guy wished to become the king of the Earth, or one of his ancestors any way. I think Bulma mentions it in one of the earlier episodes.

Gather the Dragonballs according to Bulma. You wish to become King. Before that I think some regions had a "leader' which led to war which influence Kami to make the DB(s) to save mankind.

It seemed like even though there was one ruler, the Earth was still divided up into regions by gangs/ warlords. Rabbit Gang and Red Ribbon Army, for example.

Bulma does say right in the first chapter that the last guy who gathered the dragon balls wished to become a king, though that was over a hundred years ago (since Kame-sennin found the 3-star ball about that long ago, so the last wish must have been at least that far back). So it almost certainly wasn't the current king, unless he's much older than he looks. Which I suppose is possible. I mean, Karin's over 800. Maybe dog-king dude is some kind of mystic dog hermit (Senken?) just like Karin is a cat hermit. Or it could have been one of his ancestors.

Also, the word Bulma uses in the first chapter is slightly different than the word used for the Earth's king. She just says ou-sama, which could mean any king. In contrast Earth's king is typically called koku-ou, literally "nation-king", the idea being that all of DB Earth is unified into a single nation, with the king of that nation therefore being king of the entire world. He does actually get called "king of the world" (sekai no ou) once or twice too. So going just by the manga, Bulma isn't necessarily talking about a King of Earth when she says that one guy became a king; we don't even know if the DB world was unified into a single nation way back then. But Daizenshuu 7 does clarify that the guy from 100+ years ago did wish to become the king of the world.

There's also a few other kings we see in filler and whatnot; we see two separate kings in back-to-back episodes during Goku's "training journey" filler arc. These episodes came out before the King of Earth debuted in the manga, so it's another of those little filler-created contradictions. But we could just rationalize this by saying that DB Earth still has various local kings and kingdom that are all under the authority of the central world nation and its king. This is more or less the setup One Piece has, with its various kings and nations organized under a single world government.

There's also the Mifan Empire in DB movie 3, but the whole movie is explicitly a "what-if" type story that doesn't take place in the main DB continuity.

Also, the first Jump Original CD does have either Toriyama or Nozawa talking about the King of Earth. In fact, if I remember well, one of them implies the King we know is the one that used the Dragon Balls (which would be unlikely, but still).
