MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 3/16/26!)
Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 2/14/14
Well, there's still the 23rd Budokai as a contender for the high spot.
Anyone notice that when he's talking about repetitive things in the series he has scans of the Nappa/Recoome battles displaying in the video?

Wow, so much stuff. Thanks, as always, for finding some enjoyment out of what I do. That makes it all worthwhile.
RE coola: I don't know how much you venture into the DB fandom on YouTube. I know there's a thread in General Discussion dedicating to such things. I've mostly managed to cultivate a really awesome fanbase there, but my DBoxes reviews have pulled in a pretty large number of angry, childish people. Honestly, once I get into the "Z" era, I expect a lot more of them are going to show up than are right now. And while it's good I'll probably be reaching a bigger audience (I hope), that's when I figure I'll start getting a lot of hate, be it what I say, or just angry dub fans throwing out the old "weeaboo" label with reckless abandon because I pronounce Saiyan correctly. Nothing I haven't dealt with before, but it's nicer when it's not around.
RE JulieYBM: Yeah, I expected it too honestly. And part of me wishes it had been. I especially hate that I've taken so long on Batman, but I'd have to say the extremely lukewarm reception to the last one has made it feel like less of a priority. I don't want to become just the Dragon Ball guy, but that does seem to be where my audience is right now. That and I've just been on a really big Dragon Ball kick right now, so I figure I'd better take advantage of that while it lasts. All that said, though, this is probably the longest I've ever spent making a DBD video. I just worked on this really slowly for some reason. But I wrote this script almost immediately after I finished DBDD, but it's taken until now to actually finish.
RE BlazingFiddlesticks: I would say there's a difference between claiming that the arc itself is a rehash as opposed to what Goku's being given to do is a rehash. Sure, it's not everything, but that's a heck of a lot of extremely close similarities right down to very specific details. Honestly, I got deja vu from my Ghostbusters II video while writing this one!
RE Kid Buu: Yeah, there's a reason for that.

I notice that. I found them hilarious. I wonder how Saiyan arc will be place. I mean taking an educated guess. This is how it'll be played out.Kid Buu wrote:Well, there's still the 23rd Budokai as a contender for the high spot.

9. Freeza or Saiyan
5. 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai
4. Saiyan or Freeza
3. Piccolo Daimao(Only cause in his opinion it's just a rehash)
2. Boo Arc
1. Cell Arc
Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 2/14/14
I'm actually WAY excited for you to review the Cell and Buu arcs mainly because those are arcs are so controversial among the fandom. Should be a really interesting reviewGaffer Tape wrote:Honestly, once I get into the "Z" era, I expect a lot more of them are going to show up than are right now. So this is an odd question, but do you have downloads of the videos or even just audio available? Because I just can't stream videos reliably, and I still haven't managed to watch the first video of the RRA arc - Youtube is particularly bad for me, and completely stops streaming a short way into your videos. I've managed to get through your videos up until this point, but now I've made several attempts and it's just not happening. At least if I download something I know it will work, even if it takes a long time to actually download. Audio can be streamed fairly reliably as well.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Oh, sure! Just the way the other characters are arranged around him, something that actually happens more than a fourth of the arc with Piccolo. Really if the whole thing is Goku's show start to finish anyway, that's where half the distinctiveness of a given story can come from, right?Gaffer Tape wrote:RE BlazingFiddlesticks: I would say there's a difference between claiming that the arc itself is a rehash as opposed to what Goku's being given to do is a rehash. I do keep master files of all my videos. I'm not exactly sure what I can do to remedy this for you, though. These are generally relatively large files. I suppose I could try uploading one to my Google drive and e-mailing it to you, but I assume that would take me several hours. Have you tried using a computer at your local library? Back when I was too poor to afford Internet, I used to spend a lot of time leeching off of wi-fi there or at local food establishments. In fact, several of my early videos were uploaded from such locations.Saiga wrote:So this is an odd question, but do you have downloads of the videos or even just audio available? Hey uh, I signed up here because of THIS topic actually! I've really enjoyed the videos and even grown to like the pronunciations you used (ex: Blooma) and the rating system for different types of arcs is fun
Yamcha's jobber status is set up pretty early, but you gotta feel for dude in each tournament when you consider who he loses to each time. I mean in the 23rd he had to fight GOD

Thanks for the welcome! Only comment I have right now is I'm really keen to see your thoughts on the 23rd Budokai, and as for questions, how will you be judging the Z sagas, and on this read through, any characters really grow on you?

Do you mean what scores will I be giving them? If so, I can't answer that right now.FrogTrigger wrote:how will you be judging the Z sagas
Anyway, I am trying to finish my script for the next video. In fact, I was pretty much done when I decided I'd like a little more background information on Piccolo's incantation he uses when giving birth to Cymbal. And I'm glad I did because I otherwise would have missed something really important and interesting, namely that the "Poko pen, poko pen" incantation is a children's game (which I knew), and that the aforementioned lyrics are actually a racial slur against the Chinese (which shocked me). But I was hoping to find out more, but so far I haven't heard anything. Thought I'd take it over here in the hopes that maybe someone who missed my thread in General Discussion might see it here.
"Thank you. Wow. I had no idea the implications behind that were so, um, unpleasant. I'm honestly amazed it doesn't get more attention than that. Does anyone know if that's ever come under any scrutiny, similar to how Mr. Popo, for example, is now over here? Have any later editions of the manga removed it or altered it, for example? Do Japanese children still play that game?"
Any further context would be appreciated.

Gah, when I saw you posted I thought there was a new video, but then I saw the thread title.
In the Daimao Arc, there's a few interesting filler. Goku saves Ox-King from being assassinated, Yamcha fights Tambourine, and Tenshinhan's battle with Drum is different. It's also notable this is the only time Chaozu has a confrontation with a major villain, even if he barely interacts with him.

Yea I meant through what criteria, I was wondering if it'd be different since most of the series is more adventure likeGaffer Tape wrote:Do you mean what scores will I be giving them? Lots more fighting but still full of adventure
The incantation was still present in my copy for what it's worth

Well, I meant specifically Japanese releases of the manga, not U.S. I wouldn't assume they'd take that out when no one knows what it means. I was just wondering if cultural perceptions of that phrase and that game have changed since the 1980s.

DBD: The Piccolo Daimao Arc Part 2!
Before the Easter weekend, over the past 25 days, I worked 22 of them. Fourteen of those days were in a row. On the three days off I had, I worked a little on freelance projects. So hopefully you will forgive me for being off the radar lately. But I've been watching a lot of Dragon Ball in what little spare time I've had. So enjoy this DBD, and pay attention for the CONTEST!

Re: MistareFusion's Dragon Ball Dissection! (Updated 4/24/14
Yeah Shonen battle series do tend to fall for the trope of introducing too many characters and older characters being static, and DB falls victim to it at times. I wish Yamcha had gotten Yajirobe's role here, too bad about the broken leg. But that is a discussion left for another time.
Should be noted this is poor Chaozu's only big bad battle. Doesn't fight Vegeta, Freeza, Cell, or is directly killed by Buu. Kind of a shame to think about...

I get the feeling AT wrote himself into a corner and wrote Yajirobe to have Goku bounce things off with-After reading Dragonball, I just found Yajirobe to be a replacement Krillin.
Personality wise, Yajirobe is quite refreshing-I suppose the closest would be Marechiyo Ōmaeda from Bleach, but that guy has far less charm than Yajirobe. I personally would have liked Yajirobe do more, but considering the state of human fighters in DBZ, maybe it's all for the best.

Yeah, introducing new characters seems to the main plot device when people write themselves in a corner.
I love that somebody said in that one thread about Future Trunks's debut seemed like a fan fiction story someone made on tumblr: the son of two characters with no connection from the future comes out of nowhere and kills the main villain in one hit and is super-shonen-serious with a tragic backstory.
