I was scanning through the interviews on the main site and came across something really interesting.
It said that the main reason why Toriyama decided to do the SSj as a transformation was his assistant was taking too long to do the black fill on Goku's hair...
What???

My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up, this is not the way I picture me.
I can't control my shakes, how the hell did I get here? Something about this, so very wrong.
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this. Is it a dream or a memory?

Well, that's at least the reason why Super Saiyan LOOKS the way it does, not necessarily why it exists in the first place.

Toriyama's lazy!
I can't think of anything, but I'm pretty sure there were other times as well when Toriyama made decisions based on his laziness. :p

Toriyama mentions that this was the reason why the transformation existed, not necessarily the concept of a "Super Saiyan". There's a difference between the two. Goku could've been called a Super Saiyan without having a transformation at all. Vegeta had already referred to Goku as a Super Saiyan, but of course the transformation didn't come in until after.

Hair is the hardest part when drawing an anime character.
That time your teacher asked you to draw Cell in biology class.
This man is my hero:
To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.

What you are actually trying to say is why Super Saiyan Goku has gold hair (white in the manga). The main reason why this happened is because people would understand better in the black & white manga that Goku has trasformed. But okay, not drawing the hair black it's on the perks...

All you need to do is draw circles.

Yes, but he mentions later on that he'd full-filled the promise to his assistant. The black hair was taking the longest, and they probably almost missed deadlines.

If that's really the full unequivocal reason for why SSJ exists then it's worthy of a great chuckle. But I'd say it's only part of the reason and though we all know how lazy Toriyama had been throughout the course of drawing DB I'm sure it isn't the full story...
