The digital volume Viz put up looks to be the same as the print release.

This is getting off-topic and I apologize, but I wasn't aware that some title pages had been excluded or "moved around" for the Kanzenban release. Is there anything on the main site that covers this in more detail? I just jumped over to the manga guide and didn't see anything at first glance.SaiyaJedi wrote:The Japanese digital release uses the same title pages as the Kanzenban, except they're all in color (obviously). Fantastic? It would've been that had they just recoloured his lips rather than taking away and putting a simple white line.TheAldella wrote:Oh, I don't mind that at all. That's fantastic.

Thanks so much! I never knew about this either. I knew many of the Tankōbon-exclusive illustrations were dropped for the Kanzenban, but I had no idea they fiddled with the title pages as well. I really appreciate it!SaiyaJedi wrote:From memory...

While I'm perfectly fine with Gohan's tiny penis being uncensored (not necessary to hide) somehow Mr. Popo couldn't keep his original lips. Mr. Popo isn't even human and now he looks absolutely pathetic and bland.

*sigh* apart from Mr. Popo's missing lips the full colour manga books are worth buying for sure.

Though I'm completely against censorship for the most part, the quality of this release is so gorgeous that I'm willing to overlook a missing pair of lips (it makes Popo look like a fat version of Dr. Brief's cat). Let's just hope it's the only visual edit. I'm still going to keep sending emails and tweets to Viz about restoring "Hercule" back to "Mr. Satan", and I suggest you other fans do it also.
Bring on the Freeza, Cell, and Buu arcs, and you will get my money, Viz!

I'd hope that they'd know it better to not include "Vegerot" and "Hеrcule" in this release. I was disappointed to read "Light of Death" instead of Mankankosappo but I pretended it was Mankankosappo nonetheless.KentalSSJ6 wrote:Make sure to send emails to them saying Veggerot must never see the light of day again.
Not really a fan of these pointless changes and while they don't ruin the experience they just weren't never necessary.
But honestly why the hell couldn't they just recolour Mr. Popo's lips like below?!

If Mr. Popo were a major character who consistently appeared in most chapters, I would put up a fight over it. Because he's not and I do understand how his appearance is very Blackface-looking, I'm not really gonna be fussy about it.

I find Light of Death to be quite inaccurate, considering the term "Hikari" (Light) is nowhere in Mankankosappo. Hikari is in Makankōsappō, as the "kō". I'm assuming the reading changes based on one of the many "this is placed next to that" rules that Japanese has.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Sort of. Basically, because it's a compound word they use the "on-reading" of the character, rather than the "kun-reading". So if you're using "light" as a stand-alone word, the character 光 is indeed read as hikari, but if it's part of a compound word, it's read as kou. The closest equivalent to this in English is probably the use of Latin roots in compound words, such as using "bi" instead of "two" in words like "bicycle", "bisect", etc.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Hikari is in Makankōsappō, as the "kō". I'm assuming the reading changes based on one of the many "this is placed next to that" rules that Japanese has.
This is a different ball of wax than rendaku, the thing where unvoiced consonants in Japanese become voiced in compound words. For instance, kame is the kun-reading of 亀, "turtle", but it's pronounced as game when used in certain compound words like umi-game, "sea turtle". This is still just the kun-reading of the character, with a slightly altered pronunciation. The on-reading of the 亀 character is actually ki (well, apparently there's a couple others too, but let's keep this simple), used in words like 亀甲/kikou, "tortoise shell".
I suppose rendaku is somewhat similar to how in English we pluralize words by adding an "s" on to the end, but sometimes this "s" is pronounced like a "z" in spoken language. Kind of.
Yep. So 魔貫光殺砲/makankousappou is a fancy attack name that's basically a big made-up compound word, so all the kanji in it are read with their on-readings. It breaks up like this:TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Demon Piercing Light Killing Cannon, or something to that effect.
魔: ma; "demon/devil/magic"
貫: kan; "pierce/penetrate
光: kou; "light/ray" (light as in "shiny", rather than "light-weight")
殺: satsu (becomes sappou when combined with hou); "kill"
砲: hou (see above); "cannon/gun"
The basic structure is "cannon" with four modifiers tacked on to the front. So it's a cannon that is demonic, will pierce through you, is shiny/flashy (light), and will kill you. "Special Beam Cannon" therefore maintains the same structure as the original attack name: it's "cannon" with two modifiers. "Beam" isn't too far removed from "light", but "special" pretty obviously seems like a soccer mom-friendly stand-in for "demon". And of course it jettisons "pierce" and "kill" completely, but a full and complete translation of Makankosappo into English really would be a mouthful. So, apart from the "special" nonsense, I guess it's not too bad. Though if you're picking and choosing which of the four adjectives to keep, I'd think "pierce" would be one of the more important ones, since the attack's big trait is that it goes straight through both Raditz and Goku. With that in mind, I'd suggest "Devil Drill Cannon" as a liberal translation that mirrors the format of "Special Beam Cannon" while better maintaining the spirit of the original name.
"Light of Death" is an odd one. Whereas "Makankosappo" has "cannon" as the root word that everything else (including "light") is modifying, the Viz translation treats "light" as the root, then ditches all the other modifiers except "death". The early Viz manga seems to go out of its way to mock the early Funi dub, so they were probably wanting to emphasize that they could use the word "death", which at the time was strictly kept out of the dub (see also early Viz's constant use of "Hell" where the Japanese manga simply says ano-yo/"afterlife", purely to show that they could). But they don't maintain the (in my eyes) important "pierce" bit, or the "demon" part, which is important because almost all of Piccolo's named attacks from this period start off with that, as his little trademark. So Viz's translation of the attack name really isn't any better than the Funi one, in my opinion.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
From the Kanzenshuu review, it seems like the font is the same in speech bubbles and narration squares.
Was it always like this in the US, with one single font no matter where and why the text appears?
In the French Kanzenban, they mimic the Japanese release, adapting the font to the situation: the regular "comics" font you have will be used in speech bubbles as usual, but a few different fonts will be used for specific voices: narration, a robot talking, Shenron's big and deep voice (that one doesn't exist in the Japanese release) or any voice heard through a microphone (for example announcements at the Tenkaichi Budokai or in a plane).
Similarly to the Japanese version, the font chosen will reflect the kind of voice, for example a much more straight-to-the-point and less stylized font when a robot talks or when a voice his heard through a microphone.
Do you have "speech bubble" fonts for all texts no matter what in the US releases?

I sort of like the blue lips only because I can imagine Toriyama randomly coloring it that way for whatever reason, which is common for his illustrations.
