Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?
Re: Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?
The cast of Ocean dub could replace Sean Schemmel, nobody can replace Nozawa.

Re: Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?
I guess different strokes for different folks. I don't like Kelamis' Goku (uncut movies were the exception) all that much and Corlett's even less. I was around for the Ocean dub days too. I wouldn't mind seeing Richard Cox as Goku (makes sense based on the hints for Ocean Kai's Goku). I like Ocean overall, but a lot of fans overate that cast a lot (Ocean's work on Death Note and Black Lagoon was amazing, but DBZ, eh). Both Ocean (in tandem with FUNimation and post FUNimation) and FUNimation's Z attempts are awful. They're acting was better than FUNimation (except for Westwood portions aka 103-ish to 276) but I much prefer a dub that's more accurate like Kai's to the old inaccurate one regardless of cast. All my opinion of course. Kelamis' Goku is okay at best. As of Kai I think Schemmel is a much better Goku than the previous 2 before him. I love Nozawa's Goku, but if I had to pick an English Goku with only official voices as choices, I'd go with Schemmel. Morrow and Yurk though I couldn't tolerate.JackyBoi99 wrote:Exactly, thank youGokuden wrote:The cast of Ocean dub could replace Sean Schemmel, nobody can replace Nozawa.![]()

In no way am I saying that ocean was perfect or great. However in my opinion, ocean at its best is far far better then funimation at its best.
The three uncut movies by ocean are far better then anything funimation has done, except for kai. However I still watch kai in Japanese.

Which is all good. I won't even argue that. I just think Dragon Ball wasn't Ocean's best work. I still have my issue's with FUNimation's dub even as of Kai. I never would expect a Nozawa-like voice on Goku in English, but would be nice to include more of his quirks and fix names/pronunciations.JackyBoi99 wrote:In no way am I saying that ocean was perfect or great. As for the topic, if we assume FUNimation's still in charge and they were to re-cast from the ground up. I think Goku should be done by Kara Edwards if based on the Japanese casting.
Nozawa, assuming the only reason she'd ever be recast is death (that will suck). I would pick Romi Park or Rica Matsumoto if they're going for a similar style. Or if they follow the rest of the world's casting habits (for the most part). I think Kappei Yamaguchi or Shigeru Chiba should do it (consistency with Raditz).

Yeah I agree that dragon ball isn't oceans best work. I also agree that Kara Edwards, Romi Park and Rica Matsumoto would be ideal choices to play Goku.

If I wanted to do a recast, I would take Stephanie Naldony with me, and Chris Sabat.
Stephanie can do a lot of voices, while Chris can also double as other characters as well + OCEAN DUB cast.
Where can I get the Korean dub dvds please?

DAMN. That is, hands-down, the best impression of Nozawa's Goten that I've ever heard!
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?
Well, of course, he's just another VA of a foreign dub so he doesn't stand anywhere close to the importance that Masako Nozawa's replacement is going to have for Dragon Ball as a whole.Gokuden wrote:The cast of Ocean dub could replace Sean Schemmel, nobody can replace Nozawa.
Hell if you included Schemmel alongside ten other voice actors who do superhero vocals it'd be hard to tell the difference because they're just so generic. Schemmel would do a better job as Batman than Goku.
So you're saying you prefer FUNimation's Kai dub because it's more accurate, really? So let's say the Big Green Dub was 100% accurate would you prefer this one instead?SSJ4 Furanki wrote:I much prefer a dub that's more accurate like Kai's
It doesn't just come down to accuracy but also voice acting and in that regard FUNimation isn't all that great.
Let's not forget they never used the correct pronunciation of the word Saiyan, although they did say Saiya properly on the GT dub but later on changed to their Seiyen.

Re: Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?
You know, I really don't like the "Anyone can replace Schemmel as Goku, but Nozawa is the Golden Child" talk. For one because, as sad as it is, nobody's irreplaceable (Mel Blanc, the Man of a Thousand Voices, I would argue is more irreplaceable in terms of his many roles for Warner Brothers *almost every Looney Tune*, and he still eventually was replaced), secondly because, as of Kai, the man is doing a damn good Goku. The "anyone can replace him" comes off as quite insulting to his performance and work. Anyone's too broad a term frankly. There's a balance between irreplaceable and "let's pick Goku's next voice by drawing out of a hat in the park". Both aren't the right choices.
It's not Nozawa's Goku, but it's his own take on the character, and it works well. It captures the spirit of the character while making it his own, which is the key to any voice role. A mimic's always going to be unfavorably compared to the original, but doing your own take can at least let it stand on its own legs, and it now does stand on its own. It took years to get this performance just right. Schemmel's acting had to improve, the directors had to improve, they had to finally get proper scripts...while the last two wouldn't be an issue now, he's improved well beyond some Tom, Dick, or Harry off the street.
There isn't just one right way to do Goku and everyone else is wrong. There are a few people that could do a good Goku, even if they aren't pitch perfect copies of Nozawa's Goku. One day, we might see such a take, years down the line. An actor's not going to be all that well remembered for a role if its just doing the same thing the last actor did. You don't remember the dozens of clones of Bruce Lee, but once Jackie Chan stopped trying to be one (as he was told to do so) and started doing his own thing, that's when his movie career took off.
While taking inspiration from the prior performance can be good, there's always got to be a piece of you in it for it to truly thrive, to have some soul to it.
Ah, sorry for the impassioned response. I love both Nozawa and Schemmel as Goku, but Nozawa's got more than her fair share of outspoken fans, so I had to take the road less traveled. I don't want to see either replaced if I could help it. Not that there can't be just as good/better performances (there can be), but I know I've gotten the great ones I want already. Nothing wrong with being happy with what you've got.
Now, if only Toei would stop swapping voice actors in Saint Seiya and bring back Tohru Furuya and Ryo Horikawa (among others), then I could be content (those two have yet to be replaced by equivalent options).
...Wouldn't mind Akira Kamiya un-retiring from Kenshiro as well...but that's his choice, so I respect it.

Re: Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?
I definitely agree Mewzard. It's actually quite funny how many people bash on Sean Schemmel yet everywhere you meet a fan of the series their always talking about the dub? almost every single fan that I have came in contact with(Besides this site) love him and the dub. also some of Schemmels screams when he's powering up are amazing! I have zero problems with Schemmel as a voice actor. if he gets handed a bad script there's not much he can do except go at it the best he can. I honestly think the reason why a-lot of people hate the dub's voice actors in general is not because of it's overall bad acting. but I believe it's just because it's a dub. If that's not the case why is Funimation's ocean dub praised so much? hello... ''Your father was a brilliant scientist kakarot!'' and many other examples. btw I love the ocean dub and have no problems with it. I think in my opinion it would be hard to replace Schemmel as Goku(For the US and Dub fans)and I'm positive I'm not the only fan that believes this. Heck, I even had a friend who said if the voice actors are replaced for the battle of gods movie and not done by Funimation then they're not even going to bother with it.

This is amazing! If God forbid something ever happened to Nozawa(which sadly it will) This right here would be my pick.SuicidalZerg wrote:Anyone can replace Schemmel... the only one who could possibly replace Nozawa in my view... is Korean:
