Who could replace Nozawa & Schemmel?

Post by samuraix123 » Thu Jan 23, 2014 12:34 pm

Hello Everyone!

I been thinking a lot about this lately but let's say that something bad happens to Masako Nozawa (and the) same goes for Sean Schemmel. I know a lot of you may absolutely hate the English dub with a passion but in my opinion that man has got talent... even if he has gotten thrown a bad script here and there. Nobody can do the awesome screams that him and Nozawa do. Who in the world could replace them? I forgot Funimation's Ocean Goku's voice actor's name. He was good but it only worked (IMO) so far then later on it just didn't feel right. How could they continue to do the series with either of them missing? Thinking about it makes me sad but it is a topic that I'd like to discuss and hear others discuss. So have at it. :P

No one ever could replace Masako Nozawa!

She's a legend, a living legend!

She gave a soul to Goku. Honestly, I can't think of Goku without Nozawa's voice ringing in my head.

Ian James Corlett could easily replace Sean in my opinion. I find Sean to be a bit unnatural and forced whereas Ian has more of a calm and genuine tone.
If you have any Canadian dubbed recorded material and would like to preserve it, please PM me!

Sean does the heroic persona of Goku the best IMO. Yeah, he can be over-the-top but I love that, more than the under-the-bottom restrained acting done by Ian James Corlett.

By someone who can imitate her voice flawlessly.

Couldn't give two shits about Schemmel, though, but Peter Kelamis for English Goku would be my choice.

I agree. He has this super hero voice that ''when you're around him, you just know everything is going to be alright'' ~ Bulma :P

I'd give Steve Blum a chance. (It's the obvious joke, but it wasn't that bad of a voice :P ) As far as Nozawa...I have no idea. Komori Sousuke comes to mind, because I kinda see him displaying that kind of personality, but it'd be quite different and I can't really picture him as Goku. No matter who steps in, it's gonna be tough to sell.

I might be wrong, but hasn't Kappei Yamaguchi been a popular choice for an eventual Nozawa replacement in Japan itself?

To be honest with you. I'd rather them just end the series than try to find a replacement :P

Johnny Yong Bosch for the dub Goku, voice of Ichigo (Bleach), Lelouch (Code Geass), Yu (Persona 4), etc.
I feel like Steve Blum's voice could work for Cell.
As for Nozawa, I honestly have no idea.

- Personal addition: Yuri Lowenthal for High School Gohan...IMO.

Sean Schemmel couldn't accurately portray Goku if his life literally depended on it, so just about anyone could replace him. I'm completely out of the loop on FUNimation's talent pool as of late, so I don't have any names.

I threw out in an older thread Ikue Ohtani's name as a Japanese replacement, but I don't feel as confident about that anymore. There are people swirling around in my head that might be able to do it on a superficial level(Motoko Kumai, Rica Matsumoto, Tomoko Kaneda), but to capture that naive charm akin to Nozawa...? I honestly don't know.

I keep thinking Park Romi would fit the bill best. She has the acting range to pull off all six of Nozawa Masako's roles. A Park performed Tullece or Bardock would be awesome.

Anyone could replace Schemmel as far as I'm concerned. I don't think there's anything really unique to his portrayal of Goku. Sure, he can scream and does goofy Goku pretty well but near enough any talented actor could do that.

Get Peter Kelamis back and on a par his Movie 1 performance or better and I'm a happy bunny.

Nozawa is irreplaceable. That voice is too unique for anyone to ever come close to nailing. She is Goku. If the voice had been a little more generic then it would be the same situation as above but I've yet to hear a voice actress come close to Nozawa.

Nozawa, I'm not sure. I'm not that familiar with that many Seiyuu. That and, as many have mentioned, she's irreplaceable.

For his English dub voice, I just want one English VA who can truly capture the essence of Son Goku. I'm sick of English Goku sounding like a generic superhero (Corlett), a constipated surfer-stoner (Kelamis), a suave teenager (Morrow), a bad impression of an already bad voice (Schemmel=Corlett, Wattson=Kelamis, Yurk=Morrow), Prince Charming (AB Groupe VA), like he has throat cancer (Ramirez), or some weird Jamaican accent (Speedy VA). One of the reasons I so eagerly await the Ocean Kai dub is it could be the final chance to get an English Goku who can at least get the basic fundamentals of the character down.

If I could choose, I'd pick Michael Sinterniklaas. A cross between his Dean Venture and 2003 Leonardo (TMNT) voices with a slight Appalachian accent would be a perfect fit for Goku in my opinion.

I guess I'll have to be that one person that says I can't think of (or at least don't want) anyone to replace Sean Schemmel as Goku. The man IS Goku to me (at least as much as Nozawa is). I've seen many versions of Dragon Ball since it debuted on Toonami back in the Ocean Dub days, but Schemmel as he does Goku in Kai and Masako Nozawa's Goku are two I refuse to give up.

You can take them from the role when you pry the key to the recording booth from my cold, repeatedly tazed fingers. >_>

The only one I can imagine playing Goku should Masako Nozawa retire or pass away is Rica Matsumoto, famous for playing Satoshi/Ash in Pokémon.

With Schemmel, going simply by the Funimation talent pool, I'm thinking Todd Haberkorn. I'm not really familiar with more recent Funimation dubs, so there are probably plenty of VAs that have escaped my notice, so there you go.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

For what it's worth, the voice of the male Hero-type Saiyan avatar in Dragon Ball Heroes (your "Beat", if you will) is Miyu Irino. I don't know that he'd make a good replacement for Goku and family (especially as children, since he's male), but it is something.
Incidentally, the male Berserker-type Saiyan avatar is voiced by Masakazu Morita. That's right: the Berserker type is voiced by mild-mannered Tarble.

As for Schemmel, he's never been the only English-language (adult) Goku voice on the block. He was preceded by Ian James Corlett and Peter Kelamis, and existed at the same time as Kirby Morrow in the Canadian dub of Z. I vote Lawrence Simpson as his successor.

I'm more surprised mild-mannered Tarble is voiced by someone who does a lot of gruff-sounding roles. Apparently he's also Ultimate Tenkaichi's evil voice, so I guess he does both extremes for Dragon Ball.

I can't imagine Japanese Z without Nozawa's iconic voice.

I could deal with Schemmel replaced. Don't get me wrong he makes a good Goku (now) but it never really stuck out to me even when I was dub-biased.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.
