Help! What's the name of this theme?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Help! What's the name of this theme?

Post by Bullza » Sat Mar 22, 2014 10:34 pm

This has been plaguing me for years. I've always wanted to know what it is, I've gone through the soundtracks on Youtube and have never been able to find it even though the song plays frequently throughout Dragon Ball and even parts of DBZ.

It's the theme that hopefully if I've done it should play as soon as you click the link.

I'm sure someone more familiar with the Japanese soundtrack will know.

Perhaps this site might help out?

It's the third and final piece of "Shenlong Appears" on Disc 2 the five-disc Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z: Daizenshuu set. Kenisu's site, that Patrick linked to, is invaluable.

Both those posts were incredibly helpful.

According to that site it says the theme is called Away on the Bike! but typing that in on google brings up nothing. Is there a version of the song that is separate so it doesn't play with the other theme?

If not that's fine, that's good enough for me anyway.

Actually one more, does anyone know the name of this theme from Dragon Ball GT?

According to Patricks link the song is called Powerful Pan but again nothing on google comes up for it.

Unfortunately, with the exception of the stuff from DB movie 4, DBGT's soundtrack was never released, and since the track you linked to falls in that category, it has no official name.

Here's the track without voices or sound effects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... 0ozs#t=592

Tracks in red were never put out on a CD. To be honest, I don't know where those titles come from, unless Kenisu made them all up himself. To find a name, I just looked at the the right-hand column. Example, "Away on the Bike!" is listed right next to "d2:11(c)", disc 2, track 11(I'm assuming "c" is there because three different pieces are tied into one track). I then made a mad dash to Kanzenshuu's Music Database, found the page with the five-disc set, and scrolled down to what I wanted. And voilà, the track is "Shenlong Appears".

Again thanks to the two comments above.

I'll see if I can somehow splice the song up to remove the first half then.

For the most part, yep. I knew names would be the quickest and easiest way to identify cues, so I took the liberty of creating fan-titles where no "official" titles existed -- though I hope nobody thinks I meant that in an arrogant "end-all be-all": if any official titles ever do come to light I'll gladly replace the names on my database, but to be honest after seeing a couple different anime BGM collections that only list M-numbers, I wonder if Japanese composers don't usually bother naming their cues?

The only titles I use that should be taken with more than just a grain of salt are those that were featured on the Ongakushu vol. 2 (DBZ Movie 8) and the soundtracks for movies 10 and 11... and I'm not even sure if those are the real titles or were just tacked on to the CD tracks for the sake of it.

Actually, some of the titles I gave to cues from the DragonBall Ongakushu or disc 2 of the Daizenshu set were really ancient, even occasionally inaccurate translations I made of the cues' descriptions from the latter release's booklet when I first got it. I hadn't yet seen the original DragonBall, so I had to take their word for it!
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Indeed it is and one way to make it even better would be if he could allow people to play a song and then recognise automatically what its title is.

That's something I've wanted to do since putting the site up, but I also want to keep it legal and knowing Toei, they'd take action even if I included the shortest of samples instead of the full cues.

Plus, there's the fact that I've never been able to monetarily maintain the site and thus have always had to keep it free. If there's anything my somewhat recent (failed) venture with still images in the DuckTales BGM pages has taught me, including soundbytes would shoot the bandwidth through the roof.

Pathetic, isn't it?
