Yeah, it was always gonna be 16:9. It's required in Japan now, so there's no real way around it at this point.

Hmm, now that the promo has been officially released, I guess the colors don't look as FUNimation-like as I previously thought. I mean it still looks a little different than the previous Kai chunk but, maybe not as saturated as I thought before. Hmm, I guess I judged too soon.

I wonder what Funimation will do with the domestic release. Do you think they will they go with a 16:9 release (taking into account the current Bluray season sets)? Or will they release it in 4:3 to remain consistent with the rest of their Kai releases?

Whatever Toei does with their release is what Funimation is likely to do, I imagine. I don't see them altering the aspect ratio, nope.

I imagine FUNimation will do what they did last time and just do everything 4:3 across the board. And honestly, I think that's how Toei wants to distribute it.

I've literally replayed the trailer fifteen times just to hear that instrumental bit, it's so... "fighting spirit" and heroic to an epic scale while also having that pulsing "joyful magic" side of that franchise!
You know, I just realized this as I'm finally sorting through everything, but there's a reason it may remind you so much like Z's openings. The new opening was written by Yukinojō Mori, who also wrote "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and "WE GOTTA POWER". Just throwing that out there.

There's a piece of the song 8 seconds in that sounds exactly like the beginning of "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA". It's hard to describe... it's like a ringing sound?

Yeah, it's not saturated, but the colors are very distinct from those in the previous arcs. It looks more pastel-colored. Maybe they wanted it to look closer to today's digital animation.

Are we sure the colours are really that different? Could it not be a result of that video's terrible compression? I know that the colours from Kai's TV broadcast compared to the Blu-Ray ended up slightly different due to certain rules/compression.

Pure guess work, of course.

Wow, unexpected and interesting! I think it was a clever choice given how those openings have become legendary and haven't grown old!
And just hearing the instrumental result, I'm more than thrilled for this new opening to enter the club of legendary Dragon Ball openings!
Yukinojō Mori seems to be very gifted at understanding the feel of the show - even though I absolutely love Dragon Soul too!

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Only thing that's bothering me is the colors. If the footage is accurate, then they are definitely using different tones this time, with the yellows looking a tad greenish, whereas before in Kai the yellows always had a warm, slightly orange tint to them. I actually liked Kai's warmer color palette, and if these colors in the trailer are accurate, it's a minor disappointment.

I'm curious: has it been revealed if Q-TEC is still doing the remastering? I'm curious because the black levels look rather poor in the promo (could be the compression), and Kai always had amazing dark detail.

Part of the opening animation aired on Fuji today. I'll rip it later.

Our thanks! I hope Yamamuro was able to corral a good key animator or two!

There appears to be a clip like that on YouTube:
http://youtu.be/uTx4lfgZ3w4

You can hear snippets of the opening and Nozawa switching between Goku, Gohan and Goten.
Err, at least you can hear the song. No new animation in this clip.

Wait — have we heard the lyrics somewhere already? I've only heard the instrumental. (Yukinojō Mori was the lyricist for those songs.)

EDIT: oh, there's a link in the post above mine. Not bad thus far....

Maybe it's just the poor quality of the video desaturing the colors. Even throught it doesn't really look that greenish to me.

Oops, my bad. It seems that I jumped at ambiguous info on Twitter. I checked out my recording and it's just the song indeed.

It does look the same on TV, and as Metalwario stated, the yellows obviously look more greenish than before. Honestly, I'm not fond of this. The footage looks more Frankensein-ish.

Boy, that theme song sounds good. Can't wait to hear the whole thing paired with new animation.

Excitement level is peaking. I'm still amazed that I can be this excited about a product that I really, truly don't enjoy.
