The different animation styles in the DBZ series

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

If only this style was left out, the series would've been respected more by other hardcore anime fans.

Fourth (my favorite) would be "Next to the Best":

I always thought this guy's was the same as the first but, since the only time I see this artwork is after the Androids appear, I call it "The New Type":

The last identifiable animation would be "The Best" or "Closest to Toriyama":

There could be more, but I'm not too sure. These are just the different types of animation that I can distinguish.

All three look fantastic in motion. But I like 4 and 5 the best. These two styles made for the best action in my opinion.

I wished the animators did the "Closest to Toriyama" style for every episode, but then when the major fight scenes engage they should do the "New Type" style. I feel this style captures the motion & the esscense of the fighting at best. Very similar to what they did with the Naruto vs. Sasuke fight in Naruto. They used a sort of new animation style that fits that particular fight perfectly.

Any self-respecting person claiming to be a fan would realize that this affects only a handful of episodes and would judge by content instead.

Still, it's pretty heartbreaking to be waiting on an episode only to find that it's been crappily animated like the start of the Freeza vs. SSJ Gokuh fight, the fight between Gokuh and Chichi etc.... This is especially difficult when watching the dub because then even the acting doesn't really make up for it.

Oh and about movie animation. I was under the impression that they didn't use any of the groups from the regular cartoon production because the styling is pretty different, or at least initially they didn't. I can't see these guys spending so much time working on the episodes and still having time to animate the movies as well. Probably a different team altogether.

The 'Pale Cartoony group' have all done some pretty decent work before, but as the series progressed, it seemed as though they just stopped trying. There used to be more detail in their work, as well as more shades of colors.
It's not that they stopped trying but, it's that everybodies' design evolved where as they stayed the same. And as for movies and Specials, some are lead to believe that it is "Closest to Toriyama" when in actuality there is whole different team at work with the exception of one scene in the Bardock special. Go back and watch where Bardock kills Dadoria's goons. It is obviously the "Next to Best" team.

That's why it was used when Goku and Cell were fighting. But if you watch the episode where Fat Buu whooped Gohan, Kaioshin, and Dabura's ass, you can see how much of an impact this animation has. Like when Buu slapped the shit out of Kaioshin. . .I have never ever flinched from TV before in my life until I saw that. Not to mention when he blew away Gohan, which was phenomenal in its own.

You know what I think? The whole entire Frieza saga had bad animation. They were trying to get used to the new style, but they were having a lot of trouble.

Is that a face on his body?

As for the Freeza saga's bad animation, there were times when the animation was unforgettable. For example: when Goku went Super Saiyan and the begining of Japanese episode #98, also the scene where 100% Freeza "beat" on Goku (which both had great instrumental pieces).

Hey, everyone:

Please don't quote more than a single image in your posts. If you are the person posting the images for the first time, go right ahead and post multiple ones... this only applies to people responding and quoting those images. It creates absolutely pointless scrolling. I've edited a few posts to include the text <snip images> where it's necessary, and I'd prefer to have everyone just do it themselves.

Thanks!

LMFAOO!! at the Frieza picture. There's another hilarious picture of Frieza, you only see it for a split second; when Goku fires a ki wave towards Frieza, and he flies back. Before he flies back however he makes that goofy face with his eyes bulging right out. XD. It is in the episode after he transforms into a super saiyan for the first time.

1st 4: Why is Vegeta always drawn so poorly in the Freeza saga...? :(

5th: My sweet high holy shit. This was drawn by a 5-year-old with a broken arm and soap in his eyes.

6th: LMAO.

Hm, that picture is from a well animated episode (JP ep. #11). The animation team was "Next to the Best" and the proof is in the fight with Vegeta, Nappa, and the giant.

Actually, I was using that image for a specific reason. Compare Goku's chest to his face. ;P

Wow. Definate resemblance. D'you think that the animation team took it as an homage? :P
