Re: What if 4Kids got DB?
We get it, you hate what FUNi did to the series. And you're well within your rights to think that penguin, you really are. But all this posturing as if the old dub literally violated you, kicked your puppy, laughed at your sorrow, stole your ice cream after pushing you in the mud, etc., does get pretty old. A bad dub =/= some life-scarring trauma, and it never will. And I say this not just in regards to the DBZ dub, but any bad dub. Even the horribleness of anything 4Kids did is not 'soul crushing', no matter how bad it was.
That said though, while I feel that there's not as big of a gap between what 4Kids did/does to many of it's series compared to where FUNi got started as a lot of die-hard dub fans feel there is...I still feel the fact that FUNi learned from it's mistakes, whereas 4Kids hasn't, does put a lot more in FUNi's favor compared to where things would stand if 4Kids had gotten the series. Under 4Kids authority, we would likely have gotten edits that would never have gone away, a much smaller fandom in comparison to the size of the one we have now, and a voice cast that, while it would have had better actors from the start, would have continued to be stilted by the bad scripts even today (4Kids employs a lot of really good voice actors, but with the way their scripts/directions go, it's no wonder so many of them are overlooked by a lot of fans).
'Course, that's assuming 4Kids would even still have DBZ today if they had ever gotten it, given the Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! situations after all.

Re: What if 4Kids got DB?
It's not that. It's just that how much I do love the original japanese voices, Goku, Adult Gohan, Goten and Bardock having the same voice actor just irks me. Especially Bardock, Goku and Bardock are so vastly different as characters that Nozawa's Man-Child Goku voice she gives him just doesn't suit him imo.B wrote:I like how you bolded part of this; as if to imply that was the dealbreaker on whether or not the dub was going to be good. The Monkey King wrote:And you know what? I actually prefer Funimation giving Goku, Adult Gohan, Goten and Bardock different voice actors that all actually did good jobs with their characters. When in actuality, Kara Edwards and Sonny Strait as their respective Son characters are serviceable at best, and Schemmel and Hebert are a pain to listen to.
Now Strait doesn't do a perfect job I'll admit but the somewhat 'drill sergeant'esque voice he gives Bardock suits him better than Nozawa's.
And dude you can't really say 'when in actuality' then give your opinion regarding voice acting quality like it's fact.
In my opinion Schemmel got better over time to the point where in Kai his Goku was spot on. While Herbert's voice for Adult Gohan is superb and fits him perfectly.

Re: What if 4Kids got DB?
I will admit this, Kyle Hebert is a good older Gohan. I'm looking forward to hearing him again when Funimation gets around to dubbing the Buu arc of Kai.
Brad Swaile did a good job as him in the later Ocean dub, too. One of the few VAs that actually did a good job in those later years.
Older Gohan has been lucky to have a good Japanese voice and TWO good English language voices.

I dunno guys, I really enjoyed that replacement music in that particular scene with Gohan's death
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I don't disagree with you, but I do think the replacement score fits just as well, conveying the same emotion and intensity, as the original (and I am not a "dubbie" per say. I enjoy the Japanese original over the dubs but I have a nostalgic place in my heart and the fact that is local for me for the Ocean Dub).penguintruth wrote:This is how that scene is supposed to go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHzefam0ZVA

I do admit Trunks' scream is done better here, I sense more desperation and brokeness, now just 'WAAAAAAH!' which takes up a tad more of Funimation Trunks' screaming
I agree, I find nothing worng with the replacement music used for the scene. I fits rather well.Attitudefan wrote:I dunno guys, I really enjoyed that replacement music in that particular scene with Gohan's death
In scenes such as when Goku transforms into a SSJ against Cooler I somewhat prefer the changed music:

Are you kidding me? That music takes me completely out of the scene. First, it's not mixed well and completely overwhelms the audio of the sound effects and voice acting. Second, the music can't hold a candle to the Japanese music in this scene, which swells slowly and builds up. It's gorgeous. I'd link to it, but apparently YT is full of the same English version clips, and were I to upload a Japanese clip, it would be surely flagged.
The replacement music makes it seem like a poorly synched AMV.

To answer the question, I guess this is a half-serious, half smartass answer. Not sure which one it sounds more like. But, Sean Schemmel would voice most of the adult males.

What is your opinion on Dameon Clarke as Perfect Cell? I often hear much praise for that one, so I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it.penguintruth wrote:I will admit this, Kyle Hebert is a good older Gohan. He's okay. I don't know, maybe I just haven't thought about it much. When your competition is Norio Wakamoto, you don't really stand a chance.Kid Buu wrote:What is your opinion on Dameon Clarke as Perfect Cell? I often hear much praise for that one, so I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it.
I guess I need to get back to work on my voice chart.

Yeah, Wakomoto is a legend.
My least favourite dub voice is Yamcha's, urgh! Furuya should do his dub voice too, just have him speak Engrish.

While on the subject of Japanese voice actors speaking English.....a special note needs to be made of Ryo Horikawa, whose English is actually pretty damn phenomenal.Kid Buu wrote:Furuya should do his dub voice too, just have him speak Engrish.

It's neat when Japanese voice actors can speak English, but let's learn from ADV's mistakes and not cast them as their roles in English dubs, too. Just look at Mari Iijima's performance as Lynn Minmay in the Macross dub.

Re: What if 4Kids got DB?
While Horikawa IS significantly better with English than most Japanese voice actors are, the accent is honestly still blatantly obvious.
On the other hand, if the original VA is literally perfectly fluent in English, then by all means. But that's extremely rare.

Well, I personally wasn't suggesting that Horikawa could do the role in English--you're right, his accent is still noticeable--I just thought I'd point him out because it's just generally cool how well he can speak English.Puto wrote:While Horikawa IS significantly better with English than most Japanese voice actors are, the accent is honestly still blatantly obvious.

I can agree with everything except the music. IMO it perfectly captures the tragedy of the scene, and since it sounds pretty different to what's usually heard in the dub it stands out.penguintruth wrote:That scene:The Monkey King wrote:And I'm still waiting for my 4kids dub with the same quality of this scene from Funimation DBZ:

God you'd think the Funimation dub of DBZ somehow burnt down your house.
- Too much inner exposition (that wasn't there in the original version) ("It's not fair..." Oh thanks, Trunks, tell us it's not fair, instead of letting us extrapolating that.)
- Terrible replacement music that ruins the mood
- Subpar acting
It's like they were going out of there way to drain all the genuine tragedy out of the scene and replace it with the most hammy, heavy-handed schlock they could muster.
And no, the DBZ dub didn't burn down my house, but it burnt down the DB fandom, and continues to burn today.
