Difference between Kai DVD and Blu-Ray

Post by TheKingOfKamehamehas » Thu Mar 27, 2014 1:21 am

Hey Guys, I really want to buy Kai so I'm wondering if the DVD is only a little bit worse than the blu-rays. I tend to find more DVDs also.

DVD: Dolby Digital 5.1
Blu-Ray: Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Dolby TrueHD 2.0 Japanese)

DVD: 480i (NTSC)
Blu-Ray: 1080p

Blu-Ray is the clear winner.

I think a better resolution, encoding and improved bitrate is not what he's after since it's obvious and the very reason for why the format exists.

The main difference is that the DVDs are 16:9 cropped, while the Blu-rays are 4:3 with full picture.

It's worth keeping in mind that Kai in a HD remaster - so its native format is 1080p. In this case I'd always recommend going for the Blu-Rays and buying the product in the form it was intended.

If you want to watch Dragonball in SD, just buy Dragonball Z.

Not everyone wants amazing visuals, they might want the special features, more episodes per disc, or a dub that's actually good.

Only the Japanese DVDs are cropped, aren't they? I could have sworn they were full screen on the US releases.

Indeed. Only the Japanese DVD is cropped while the US sets are both in 4:3.

There are actually some really good reviews of the DVD and Blu-rays over on Fanboy Review. Marc really knows his stuff, so I highly suggest giving them a read.

Blu-ray is the better option but if you're not much of a videophile then perhaps you won't notice much difference between the two, to be frank, I was rarely ever impressed with the HD quality of Kai on BD but watching the Saiyan arc to Freeza's arc on Blu-ray with Yamamoto's score was awesome nevertheless.

The French DVDs were in 16x9 AR too, iirc.

How much should I pay for the Blu-Rays? There are kind of expensive and its hard to find the complete collection without paying over $150

That depends. Which version are you wanting?

Do you want the parts releases with the first 4 parts using the original Yamamoto score while parts 5 - 8 contain Kikuchi or are you wanting the season sets which re-scored parts 1 - 4 with Kikuchi for a more consistent soundtrack?

I want parts 1-4 with Kenji Yamamoto score and parts 4-8 or season 3-4 on Blu-Ray. I don't really like the replaced score so Seasons 1-2 are a no no.

I got lucky last year when I found DBZ Kai part 3 at a best buy for 28 bucks. I also got lucky when I found only one copy of DBZ Kai part 4 on amazon.ca for 30 bucks
