Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
So I decided to create and topic about the brief history of Dragon Ball in my humble home country Finland! I'm going talking about the small (and stupid) controversy about the release of it and how it almost did not make it here. Also I'm going to talk about the impact of it making Manga/Anime mainstream here. So in couple of days I will update this thread about those things. Also I'm going to update everytime something DB related is coming to Finland

Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
Is there a Finnish dub of DragonBall/Z/GT?
Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
Nope there isn't. The only anime related that we got was Funimation dub of DBZ on saturday mornings for a while. Oh also couple of movies on dvd but instead of Funimation dub it used the "big green dub" or the original japanese one.TheRed259 wrote:Is there a Finnish dub of DragonBall/Z/GT?
Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
That cover looks like the Norwegian cover. From which version did it get translated? The Norwegian version was something like this: japanese -> german, german -> danish ->, danish -> swedish, swedish -> norwegian.

Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
This is just lame. I know that dubbing in Finland is used very rarely, but if the anime isn't going to be dubbed, isn't it better to air the Japanese version than the English dub (I assume it was subbed BTW)?Lozjudai wrote:The only anime related that we got was Funimation dub of DBZ on saturday mornings for a while.

It was subbed and thank god it wasn't dubbed (dubbing here sucks ass) but for some odd reason in the final DBZ episode they used the German dubUltimateHammerBro wrote:This is just lame. Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
I always assumed that they translated it from Japanese? But I guess it makes sense to translate it from an "easier" language like German for example. Does anyone know when was DB manga released officially in Germany? It would be nice to know which version was published first.sangofe wrote:That cover looks like the Norwegian cover. Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
All the Scandinavian translations of the manga were based on the German translation, which itself I believe was based on the at-the-time-current French translation with some heavy crosschecking with the Japanese version to improve accuracy.
They're quite accurate to the Japanese text (some odd mistranslations here and there), way moreso than the English Viz translation, so unless the Finnish translation was drunk or something, your Finnish editions should be perfectly fine.

Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
There was also no dub for the Dutch version instead they used the "Ocean Dub" with subs.UltimateHammerBro wrote:This is just lame. Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
No, the german version was translated from Japanese. And you can't be meaning the Norwegian version is close to the Japanese version, can you? I've compared the french newest version to the norwegian version and there's ton of differences.Adamant wrote:All the Scandinavian translations of the manga were based on the German translation, which itself I believe was based on the at-the-time-current French translation with some heavy crosschecking with the Japanese version to improve accuracy.

I've compared it to the Japanese one, so those differences are presumably errors in the French translation.sangofe wrote:No, the german version was translated from Japanese. Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
That may be. I'm not particularly familiar with the French OR the German version, I just know the Scandinavian releases were a) translated from German and b) are very accurate to the original Japanese.sangofe wrote:I told you, they're not based on the french version but on the German that's translated from Japanese...Adamant wrote:I've compared it to the Japanese one, so those differences are presumably errors in the French translation.sangofe wrote: No, the german version was translated from Japanese. There are so many fake versions in this video...
Re: Dragon Ball in Finnish!!
It probably is, Finland never dubbed the Dragonball series.sangofe wrote:Lozjudai wrote:Nope there isn't. We only had few tv channels playing it from time to time.
Also just thinking about dubbing the dragonball to finnish.. it seems so ridiculous haha >_<
