As for Budokai it's like Street Fighter on steroids and we only had one throughout the entire 7th gen, I suppose Dimps was better off making more money with the Heroes' series so Namco Bandai left the home console games for the less desirable developers (Spike & Artdink) and if I recall Spike gave a shot at mixing Budokai + Tenkaichi into one but that didn't end up well at all.

Anyway, I'm anxious to try out J-Stars Victory Vs. as that looks awesome but I'll hold on until there's sellers from UK (eBay/Amazon) with it as I don't want to pay for import fees.
Lol, the budokai/tenkaichi games were too poor of a fighter and the combo and counter controls were awful. Super DBZ is the closest thing to a real fighter and it's still note as good and polished as street fighter or tekken for that matter.
I'd like to see a super dbz attempt again.

How in the blue world are the combos and counter controls awful?

You always keep making it a point that console dbz games for the ps2 era are awful , but every single time i call you out on this, you never seem to give a reply. Giving me the impression that in all quite honesty, you're not even that good at the budokai series in general, nor do you know the actual positives and negatives about the system.

And no, an anime fighter not being as complex as a traditonal fighter doesn't automatically make it "horrible". otherwise you'd have to apply this same logic to other anime fighting games in general, which despite not being as complex as fighters, still managed to get some communities dedicated to them(like shishi renden for the accel series)

The counters were all about timing, unless you were bad at it I'd hardly call that awful defense/counter controls. I do agree that Super DBZ was the closest DBZ was to a fighter, if you don't count Bathazar and Cybaster's DBZ Mugen characters.

What kind of fighter specifically?

The Dragon Ball Budokai games were always the traditional fighting games and about Super DBZ.. It's like Budokai if it had the 3D aspect and liberty.

Super DBZ was DBZ trying to be Street Fighter in a 3D environment. It's the closest DBZ came to a traditional fighting game (i.e quarter-circle + button type moves).

I honestly cant stand Street Fighter's COD-level of monopoly it has on the entire fighting genre just because of the mainstream preference. Every new fighter these days feels like a dull clone of SF4 now... Id rather say Burst limit was the closest to a real fighter to its uniqueness and minor flaws.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

The problem with Super DBZ is that it was ultimately an average game and lacked any real reason to keep playing. And I'd honestly say that Budokai 3 far outclasses it as both a fighter and a DBZ game. The combos in Super DBZ were ridiculously limited while in B3 each character has tons of creative cancel combo options. And ki management was actually important in Budokai 3 because you needed it for all sorts of things while in Super DBZ you only needed ki for your ultimate attack.

Well to be fair 3D fighters like Tekken have always been unique and have avoided copying Street Fighter's gameplay. But as far as 2D fighters go I agree that they do tend to ripoff Street Fighter to an extent. I suppose it's only natural as that's the game that started the whole genre in terms of popularity with SF2 and then revived it years later with SF4. Still Tekken managed to keep going and stay popular even when Street Fighter was in its long hiatus.

Not every character has combo potential. They favour some over others.

Cell for example can cancel a lot better and has a lot more cancel opportunities than #17 for example.

Omega Shenron has long strings and can cancel at the end of basically every combo starter (P ->P etc), whereas characters like Yamcha only have simple 4 hit strings to cancel off. While only being able to do 1-3 combo cancels.

No not every character does but if you watch videos from the likes of Saiyanjin2 and Underlordico you'll see that the majority of the cast can combo pretty damn well. And those who don't have that many cancels can still rely on stuns and juggles for their combos. Plus Infinite World made things more balanced so that everyone could combo fairly well. Both games put Super DBZ to shame anyway imo.

The actual matches in Super DBZ are more fun tho. Specially high level play, so much fun to watch.

I'd take a Budokai 4 and/or Budokai Tenkaichi 4 any day over the games they make nowadays.

Yea same here, but it seems that Dimps has other projects they are working on and I have feeling spike will come back eventually and make another DBZ game ( Not Tenkaichi 4).

Yeah, I'll take a BT4, RB3, or a Budokai 4(?) over garbage like Battle of Z anyday.

but if those games don't come to light, then i'd hope that a potential "Boz2" would far outshine it's garbage predecessor. That, or they do something new by bringing in zenkai battle royal. i have a feeling they'll stick with a sequel though, unless the first game really did do that bad.

Thanks a lot budokaifanatic007 for sharing my video on Kanzenshuu forum.
I read some comments and I just wanted to clarify that in Budokai 3 / Infinite World, the top and mid-tier of these games are still quite personalized and have considerable combo potential, the rest is poorer yes, but possesses anyway a decent list of combo chain. In the P/K system, for example in physical attack there are the punch and kick that already form a list of 40-60 personalized combos for each character and consisted of directional inputs which split these same chains.
In brief the cancel style of Dimps forces to play characters in a different way during fights between cancelers, but I agree to say that this style of game would need of a little update, with animations, and combos even more personalized, maybe on PS4 who knows, because on our gen' of current console, the DB games doesn't really do honor to the skill, only BL and BHDC stand out positively at this level.
Also even if today I become extremely pessimistic about the future of DBZ games, I keep still hope, by the way there must be a mandatory DB game per year, BOZ was released in January but was announced in June in the V-jump, it will be similar for 2014, thus I cross fingers.

The implication is that we should be patient with learning, and with learners. It takes time to learn to do things. What seems easy to us now may have been difficult at first.

This guy has made a similar video on the subject. I wonder what it'll take to get Namco Bandai to open their eyes.

Yea he is right. You think there is any chance of this New game being a 2D fighter?

I wish it were but unfortunately it looks like yet another Spike game. The best we can hope from that game is that it turns out to be RB3 or BT4.
