The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I feel one of Toriyama's comments from this interview should be brought up: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/ ... riyama-qa/
"First, a word of warning: I am a considerably arbitrary creator, so I’ve imagined what happens after for these three for the first time just now. The possibility that I have made mistakes about the characters’ backgrounds is great. Proceed with caution."
He knows full well that he's probably messing things up, and that doesn't stop him. At the same time though, the way he says this makes it sound like his interview comments generally aren't meant to be taken seriously. On the bright side, since he doesn't even put much stock into these throw away retcons/statements when he makes new ones (seeing as he contradicts previous ones), I wouldn't count on them staying true for too long. Since these comments add nothing to the story, damage the story to varying extents, and are themselves subject to being erased, I would take them all with a grain of salt. They don't seem like they're meant to be taken very seriously.

Sounds about right. Apparently Goku and Vegeta have more latent power than Gohan now....somehow...Kid Buu wrote:He'll probably say something along the lines ofFionordequester wrote:You know, as long as he's at it though, someone really should ask him...

Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
Dear Toriyama, do you really stay at home and think all these useless stories or do you invent them during the interview?
These new tidbits may be very interesting and good at impressing us but still they are not helpful.
Mr. Satan attended the ''Satan Castle''. So?
Android 16 was inspired by Dr. Gero's son. So?
Beerus sealed the Elder Kaiōshin away in the Z Sword. So?
DragonBall Z has ended since 1996. What's the point of all this? Why should I learn all these tidbits in 2014 (almost 20 years later)?
If you still have ideas, just create a new DBZ Manga instead.

Hes gone on to say he doesent have the strength, desire, or will to draw another manga like DBZ. If another manga was done, it would most likely be helmed by Toytaro/Toyble seeing as he's doing the DB Heroes manga.TheRed259 wrote:Dear Toriyama, do you really stay at home and think all these useless stories or do you invent them during the interview?

I want someone to ask him about Vegeta and Tarble's mom.
Also 17 and 18's real names have been revealed as well as little bit more on 17.

Toriyama also revealed that after the Cell arc No. 17 becomes a park ranger at a nature preserve. He's well suited to the work and shows no mercy to poachers! In this happy ending, he's well paid and married to a zoologist with two adopted children.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Its sad because I'm starting thinking this too. I want him to develop the story after Battle of Gods, not change whats already done.RandomGuy96 wrote:"someone get this man as far away from the franchise as possible".
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I don't know guys, I kind of like most of this extra info. They're neat little details I think, aside from Dragon Ball Minus retconning parts of Bardock's Story (and even then, I haven't read it, so I don't know how good it is).

I'm laughing like an idiot at this, given all the hooplah about canon and retcons. You heard it here first folks; just because someone said it doesn't mean it's true!Toriyama wrote:Though in the manga Kaiōshin said that Bibidi made him, the truth is
Who do I contact at Toei to give us a Fantasia-esque animated short of Buu waking up, rampaging through the universe, and going back to sleep, all set to classical music? I absolutely love this for completely superficial reasons: I just think Goku "looks" better in his base form or as a base Super Saiyan. I didn't really need an in-universe explanation to do away with the other forms, but it's cool to have one.Toriyama wrote:Super Saiyan 2 and 3 are nothing more than powered-up variations of Super Saiyan. I, as a fan, have been successfully serviced.

I like how seemingly random 17's epilogue is. And it fits with that one shot of him near the end of the manga (woods and the gun).
On hiatus.
Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
The questions of "why do we need to know this?" or "so?" makes no sense to me. Because the author chose to share it. Why do we need to know anything? Why did Dragon Ball ever even have to be drawn? It's a story.
If there is one thing that, if not annoys, at least perplexes me is the new information that paints villains in a more forgiving light(Gero just loving his dead son, 17 becoming a happy family man, everything Bardock...) That is an example of taking something away from the original story for no discernible reason. Maybe it's more realistic that these characters aren't just assholes, but I personally never questioned why they were the way they were. Dragon Ball, and even a lot of other Toriyama works, never seemed to be bothered with the introspective and that was partly the beauty of it. Here's hoping we don't find out Babidi wanted to entertain children's birthday parties but was pressured into villainy by Bibidi.

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I don't know if you were specifically addressing me, but, on the surface, I have no problem with information for the sake of information, even if I seem to be saying otherwise. I thought the whole Mark thing a few years ago was cool. I think the Gero/#16 connection is also interesting. It's just that every time an author throws out something like this, it's a strong chance it's going to fuck something up. And most of these have done exactly that. Toriyama is just not the kind of author to have the ability to do something like this. I would say most authors probably shouldn't start changing around their own continuities 20 years later. You're just never the same person, never have the same mindset you did then, and you usually aren't as knowledgeable about the universe as you were then. So just harmless little tidbits are okay, if they are indeed that. But when you start changing things around, intentionally or, worse, unintentionally, there'd better be a good reason for it. It needs to be for the sake of the story. Otherwise, you're just complicating/breaking things for no reason. And that's why I have a problem with information for the sake of information.
As much as my favorite fan service would be exploring some of the older DB stories, as they never get any love and are oftentimes pretty vague, I feel that, for the sake of the franchise, Toriyama should not be looking backwards. If he really wants to add to Dragon Ball, he should be moving forward. But I'd really prefer he leave it alone entirely.

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
Gero just loving his dead son...
Actually...that surprisingly makes a lot of sense now that I think about it.
Because in the Anime, I always found it so ridiculous how Dr. Gero would constantly yell and scream and boss around guys who were both willing AND able to kill him in two seconds flat if they got mad enough. So when he freaked out about them wanting to take #16 out of his pod (and thereby rob him of the only remembrance he has of his son), that's actually a pretty legit reason to get freaked out and lose your sense of reason. And it'd also explain why he never wanted #16 to try and go fight Goku, despite there being seemingly nothing wrong with #16.

Toriyama needs an editor to tell him "That's retarded, try again." before anything goes to public.

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
That's a good point! Toriyama had an editor for the entirety of his serialization of Dragon Ball. He most likely wouldn't have that kind of guidance for Q&A sessions like this. No wonder. But then again, I would assume he had an editor for DB Minus, and look how that turned out, so maybe it wouldn't make a difference. Maybe he's so legendary now that no one challenges him.hleV wrote:Toriyama needs an editor to tell him "That's retarded, try again." before anything goes to public.

At the very least, Toyotaro needs to sit in on these and be the guy to be able to look over at and when he shakes his head you know that you've contradicted something and need to come up with something else.

Just got to agree with everything said by RandomGuy96 and GafferTape here. On Toriyama having an editor, I'm not sure I could trust anyone at Shueisha having the ability to spot what information is just plain stupid or I doubt this would even be printed.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
