Color Preferences - Anime vs Manga

Post by FortuneSSJ » Thu May 08, 2014 6:05 pm

Reading the manga full color I'm noticing there are more diferences with the anime colors than I thought.

The ones I found so far:
Turtle school Gi
Goku's boots
Bulma's hair
Piccolo's belt
Kami's kanji circle
Kid Gohan's wristbands and hat
Uranai Baba's Hair
Roshi's casual outfit
Kame House
Nappa's armour
Namekians skin color scheme
Kami's lookout and Karin's tower
Scouters
Ki blasts

Before read it I only knew about the three first ones. So far there are 4 from this list that I like more in the manga:

Bulma's Hair - Its purple. Thus Trunks hair color makes more sense (which I never thought about it before to be honest) I got used to it.
Namekians skin color scheme - Their patches are yellow instead of pink. Like it more this way.
Kami's lookout and Karin's tower - Both are complete white. Whats gives me more feels about those being holy places.

Do you have any preferences?!

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

The colours that I've gotten used to are those on the anime series so while it doesn't bother me that they're different in the manga (as well as in other books such as Dragon Ball: Complete Illustrations it's kinda weird that they can't be consistent about it. I just take it as different and that's it.

But for sure, I definitely prefer Karin to be white too him being blue does look strange after all those years.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

My head-canon is that the characters actually have different color gis. At some point Goku where's a yellow one, I guess, and Gohan a green one. Exactly when, who knows.

As for skin/hair/body-related things, Toriyama(or the Full Color edition) wins. Literally nothing is different because Buu-era Gohan's wristbands are gold instead of red.

As a rule I prefer the manga colors for most things, with a few notable exceptions:
-Piccolo's muscle pad things. I can't see them as anything but pink.
-Karin being a color other than white is jarring for me.
-Kibito and Kaioshin's odd manga colors also come off as very strange coming from the anime.

The only thing I SIGNIFICANTLY prefer over the anime coloring is Goten's sleeves, making them black is a great way of differentiating him from his family that I feel is a shame that wasn't carried over.

I think I do prefer the anime ones, mostly because I got used to them before I saw the manga colors. After all, I didn't see manga colors until the kanzenban edition came out (besides a few covers).

I want to add, that I don't like when they mix things up. The budokai games tend to mix colors from the anime and manga (not many, but a few). It took a while to get Krilin's anime eyes right on videogames (Sparking Meteor), and I think Battle of Z went back to the white eyes again... So either they do a manga game (Super DBZ) or anime based ones, but they shouldn't mix them unless they are alternative costumes.

I don't remember if this has been carried over to the Full-Color manga, but Taopaipai's color scheme in the Kanzenban cover is yellow and purple. And I love it.

Nope. Tao Pai Pai is still pink in the full color manga.
As for me, I love the full color manga colors because it gives the entire manga consistency (well, excluding the first two chapters of Dragon Ball, which I hope they re-do if they ever release the first part in print... well, actually I wish they'd redo the entire Pilaf arc, the shading style is a bit different from the rest). The anime is a bit inconsistent with the Kame dogis, especially between DB and Z.

I like the manga colors more, generally taking the Full Color edition as my favorite pick (although I wish Karin was the light blue from the original color pages, with his nose and mouth and inner part of the ears being left white).
Image
However, I do think it's a shame they didn't use the Kanzenban colors for Kaio Shin and Kibito (they have the right Kanzenban skin tone which suits them much better, but the costumes have the same bland colors than the anime). Their costumes look so good, mystical and stylish on Toriyama's Kanzenban cover.
Image
Wish Kinto-Un was kept purple as in Toriyama's vision too.
And I also wish Kaio had kept the first impressive Kanzenban colors he had (with green sleeves and yellow+orange lines and orange symbol), instead of this being later corrected to something closer to anime colors.

I generally prefer the manga colours except for those that are drastically different (e.g. Kaioshin) where I find myself preferring the anime colours just because I'm used to them.

I have the first release of Figuarts Piccolo and even though the SDCC one had a higher quality paint job, I'm happier with the one I have for the manga colours.
Incidentally, Kami's muscle pads are yellow in the anime too.

I don't like how the SSJ aura is white in the manga. Can someone post a picture of Piccolo in the manga please.
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)
Kai >>> Z

And the original manga colors from Toriyama are even more inconsistent. So, I also prefer the Colored Edition's colors.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Anime for me. Nostalgia and mostly watching the anime being the reason why. Kaioshin and Kibito look ugly in their manga colour.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

For consistency's sake the best (imo, ofc) is the anime version in terms of colours because they always stick to the same ones rather than change around in different manga/book releases.

This is what Piccolo's muscle pad looks like with the Full Colour manga colours:
Anime ver.:
Piccolo's muscle pad for me has to look pink or else it just doesn't look right at all, but Mr. Popo had it worse as they made him a full-sized Tama (Dr. Briefs pet) on the Viz Full Colour (his lips were taken away).

I generally prefer: Manga > Full Color > Anime.

I sadly bought the first volume of the Full Color hoping that it would respect the manga colors. Unfortunately it wasn't the case.

I would be up to buy a completely limited red and grey palette of the manga, as that's my favorite variation of Toriyama's coloring next to his Daizenshuu illustrations. There's just something about the toned muteness that appeals to my eye.
