Couldn't resist. Seriously, though, I agree that these people are just "They Changed It Now It Sucks". Which is ironic, since the Funi dub is the "changed" version in the first place. I don't understand the whole nostalgia thing, though. I mean, if Funimation or somebody did a redub of some 4Kids dubs or something, I'd be overjoyed to get it uncut. I wouldn't cling on to the old version.

Re: Why do Kai haters say the the dub sounds boring?
Same reasons why Cowboy Bebop dub fanboys think only their dub is good, when almost every other Animaze/modern LA dub is better or as good. Because they grew up with it. Funnily enough, both the DBZ in house dub and the Bebop dub were released more or less during the same time on home video in North America. The DBZ dub was never good, while for the time, the Bebop dub was pretty revolutionary. Nowadays, neither dub holds up. The Bebop dub suffers too much from talking when you're not supposed to, Beau Blingsea's inconsistent Jet, script changes, etc. Apparently this dub is better than the Japanese version, with near perfect voice acting and one of the "few good English dubs" even preferred by the creator(which was debunked on ANN). The same applies for DBZ, but much worse. Even that DBZ site that exposed both Funi dubs, as reactionary as it is, was spot on about the dub. The dub sucked, because the script was awful, the VAs were literally first timers, the dub used awful technology, the acting was dreadful. At least Bebop sounded good for the time, didn't replace the music and was close to the Japanese version most of the time. DBZ's dub(s) never held up. According to the Toonami generation, this is the only dub worth watching or one of the few dubs, which is wrong.
It's mainly indoctrination, nostalgia and ignorance. These are the same guys who will give you 100 reasons why the Bleach/Naruto/Death Note/Code Geass dubs sucks, yet claim that DBZ is the greatest dub of all time. If you take them seriously, you will be falling into their comfort zone. The Kai dub, don't get me wrong is pretty bad for a dub from 2010. Even the FMAB* dub is better, due to the better voice actors and script, but it's better than their old attempts.

Whether he'd be praising or criticising he's giving his opinion of it so you just have to accept that not everyone likes FUNimation's Kai dub.matt0044 wrote:So why are you here in this thread?BurakkuForesuto wrote:The Kai dub, don't get me wrong is pretty bad for a dub from 2010.
Such a shame that FUNimation didn't replace Schemmel (Goku) and Sabat (Vegeta) with better voice actors and rather than Colleen we could've had Gohan with a natural and unique voice but instead just a generic high-pitched school girl (no Colleen doesn't come close to Masako's performance).

I love the old dub and the new dub of Kai! My brother and my friend hate it with a passion though. haha

Re: Why do Kai haters say the the dub sounds boring?
And then there's the other problem, which I've brought up a few times before, which is that there are a huge amount of casual fans who don't know that the versions shown on Nicktoons and the CW4Kids aren't the "real" versions. They aren't aware that an uncut version of Kai exists, leading many to the misconception that "DBZ is for adults, Kai was toned down for the kiddies." Which is ironic and incorrect for countless reasons. I've talked a lot of people into watching--and even liking--Kai based on pointing out that an uncut version exists.
However, with all due respect to FUNimation, I think it's them that dropped the ball on that issue. As I've pointed out numerous times, not a single one of their commercials for Kai has the word "uncut" in it, which has only helped to fuel the misconception. For a long time I thought it was completely unnecessary for FUNimation to advertise their anime as uncut anymore because I thought it was common knowledge. After seeing the many misconceptions about Kai, though, I'm convinced that they need to go back to using that word whenever it's applicable.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Sean Schemmel does a great job with Goku much better then those crappy voice actors from the ocean dub who did Gokus voice. When I hear Colleen as Gohan it doesn't sound like a high-pitched school girl, it sounds like an actual 4 year old boy.dbboxkaifan wrote:Whether he'd be praising or criticising he's giving his opinion of it so you just have to accept that not everyone likes FUNimation's Kai dub.matt0044 wrote:So why are you here in this thread?BurakkuForesuto wrote:The Kai dub, don't get me wrong is pretty bad for a dub from 2010.

I'm sorry... what? How can Gohan's voice in Kai be applied to a high school girl?dbboxkaifan wrote:rather than Colleen we could've had Gohan with a natural and unique voice but instead just a generic high-pitched school girl (no Colleen doesn't come close to Masako's performance).

Re: Why do Kai haters say the the dub sounds boring?
No idea. I'm still trying to figure this argument out. Colleen plays Gohan from ages 4-9 (possibly 10) years old. Boys that age naturally have higher pitched voices. It's not until at least 12 or 13 years do boys' voices begin deepening. I'm not sure what people are expecting him to sound like. I have an 11 year old brother and the pitch of his voice is honestly not that much different than Colleen's Gohan.matt0044 wrote:I'm sorry... what? No, I'm glad they didn't replace Schemmel and Sabat because both went above and beyond their old performances and made the roles their own. They're good voice actors now, and they wanted the dub to be good more than anyone else.dbboxkaifan wrote:

Sean was the one who pushed for the correct pronunciation of Kaio-Ken, and to add "Son Goku" (which he got at least once) while making his Goku voice far more natural yet fitting, and Sabat not only directed the dub well, really put in a lot of work to improve his performance as Vegeta.
I completely disagree with the earlier notion that Kai's dub is bad for a dub of its time as well (not directed at dbboxkaifan, but at the original poster of that comment, BurakkuForesuto).

Pretty much a mixture of both I would say.VegettoEX wrote:My guess is that it's either:

I'm actually curious as to what your thoughts on the dub may be even though for all intents and purposes the Japanese will always be your cast. Only heard your thoughts for the Saiyan arc via your Part 1 review/podcast 220, I think. Just curious now that the dub has had time to be out for a few years now.

Going back and listening to Nadolny Gohan during the Saiyan Saga is... so fucking weird.Freeza Soldier #156 wrote:No idea. I'm still trying to figure this argument out. Just watched Raditz arrival yesterday, and it's so weird and offputting to hear a 3 year old have such a gravely voice.
Nadolny is a little more believable during the Cell Saga, but for the rest of the series, i can't really take seriously Kid Gohan as a chain smoker.
