A year & 2 months later and still no Battle of Gods dub

English dub I mean.
What the heck is taking Fox so long to give it to FUNi so they could get on it?

These things take time and I'm betting Funi will announce it at Otakon this year. I'm pretty sure that this could have been talked about in the BOG thread. If you can wait 10+ years for the older DBZ movies to come out in the US then another year won't hurt.

The first new Evangelion movie hit Japanese theaters in September 2007. FUNimation released it in March 2010.

The second new Evangelion movie hit Japanese theaters in June 2009. FUNimation released it in March 2011.

The third new Evangelion movie hit Japanese theaters in November 2012. FUNimation hasn't released it yet (it was delayed for a short theatrical appearance over here).

One Piece: Strong World hit Japanese theaters in December 2009. FUNimation released it in November 2013.

One Piece: Film Z hit Japanese theaters in December 2012. FUNimation will release it sometime in fall 2014.

So there are a bunch of comparisons for things like giant-scale theatrical films with large production committees down to serialized major shonen movies for a franchise they already produce.

Battle of Gods only hit Japanese theaters a little over a year ago. Expecting it to be out now in North America already is bonkers. I know seeing the rest of the world starting to get it makes it a little weird, but it's not like this is some set of extraordinary circumstances beyond comprehension.

It'll come out when it comes out. In the mean time, anyone who wants to enjoy the movie is free to do so via the plethora of legal options, including a cheap, English-subtitled DVD/Blu-ray release.

Heck, DBZ movie 13 came out in 1995 and Funi didn't release that stateside until, what, 2007?

It's still early days.

Wrath of the Dragon came out in 2006 for the US. 11 years after it came out in the US. Imagine by then, a lot of the hardcore DBZ fans already seen the movie.

Takes time. And be glad there are plans for it, and it's not locked in legal mumbo-jumbo like what keeps Macross Frontier from America's sunny shores.

FUNimation has acknowledged the existence of Battle of Gods in their own products, as such is listed on Rock the Dragon book, so just be patient or purchase that Hong Kong Blu-ray which has English subs.

I'll just wait, I've got no rush.

3.5 to 12 years from now OP, don't worry, I'm sure Goku will still look as young as he ever did.

I can't freaking wait for the Funimation Dub. Really looking forward to hearing how they handle Vegeta singing lol. Maybe they will finally do an English version of Head-Cha-La, which I've always wanted for a long time now. Their English dub of Dragon Soul is my second favorite theme, right behind the English Dragon Ball theme.

Yeah, you're all right.
I was just feeling pretty impatient but you are pretty much right VEX about the other FUNi releases...they also took/are taking their time.
Patience is key.

I very much wanted to hear an English dub of Chala Head Chala too (other than the two Filipino dub versions), however, apparently that's not going to happen, because I guess Flow said that they did not want their songs dubbed.

That's one thing I'm not necessarily looking forward to, despite it not actually happening: dubbed songs. If FLOW allowed for such to happen, they'd just get Schemmel or Vic Mignogna to cover it, and their versions of "Dragon Soul" leave me lifeless.

I bought the Hong Kong Blu-ray, and despite the few typos, it's passable. FUNimation's gonna have to pony up the cash for the extended version if they want me to pony up my cash to them.

Honestly, I'm banking on them announcing it at a con any time now, even if it doesn't come with a release date yet, or if it does that the release date is quite some time away. They've gotta come up with something to rival Viz's announcement of Sailor Moon after all, and short of them like...having all of Gundam now or something, revealing Battle of Gods is pretty much the only way to even come close to rivaling Viz this con season.

The big thing I'm really hoping for is a small-scale theatrical release of the dub. I know there's no way BoG would make back its money if it had a national theatrical release, but a small-scale release in just a few select cities (like what they did with the Rebuild of Evangelion movies) would work for me...especially since I live in LA, which is a city that would most assuredly get it if that came to pass. I had some major problems with the story of Evangelion 3.0, but strictly speaking about the audio and visuals, it was mesmerizing to see it in a theater.

You live in LA? It says on your profile you are in Ohio.

As for BoG dub, well let's see if they dub the 2008 special first.

Doesnt matter how many years passes, seems like Portugal will never have its dub.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Hmm, been a while since I updated my Kanzenshuu profile (I did live in Ohio when I joined).

As for the 2008 special, there are conflicting reports that that may have actually been dubbed and just never released. Supposedly, Todd Haberkorn, who plays Tarble in the English dub of the videogames, accidentally admitted that he had worked on the 2008 special as well.

The 2008 special is a special that's a half hour long. Funi most likely has no idea how to release since a DVD and Blu-Ray release won't be enough to support a special that is so short. I guess we could see it as a special feature for Battle of Gods when it comes out on home video.

The length of something alone wouldn't prevent FUNimation from releasing all-new Dragon Ball Z footage. They're smart and resourceful. When they re-released DB Movie 1 -- which is only about 45 minutes -- they did so at a $15 price point.

If it (being the JSAT special) ever was dubbed (and it sounds like it was, or at least work began on it), it could have been:

- FUNimation just going ahead and getting work done on it before they even had a/the license just to be ahead of the game, or
- FUNimation having the license and completing it and then something falling out from under them preventing its release/completion
