All (or most) manga/Toriyama costumes

Post by Cold Skin » Sat May 17, 2014 5:18 pm

PAGE 1 >> The Son family.
PAGE 2 >> Other characters.

Here are most of the costumes appearing in the manga or Toriyama's artwork, faithful to the author's vision of what the characters would wear depending on circumstances.
It may give you an idea of what you'd like to see in games (when you see how many costumes from the original comics and various medias you can get in Injustice: Gods Among Us, you'd think they could do the same with Dragon Ball).

Naturally, Son Goku is likely the one that has the most costumes available.
Sorry if I get some information wrong, doing what I can!

- Story costumes: costumes that appear during the story itself. Because they are part of the original story, they should be mandatory in games, at least as alternative costumes.
- Bonus costumes: costumes that don't appear in the story itself, but in artworks. They may not be part of the original story, but are still part of the author's vision for a character, and would ideally be available as optional DLCs in games.

Cool list.
A few that I think you are missing are the Cross Epoch costume and the army costume from one of the Toriyama Art Exhibition books. There might be a few more from covers of Jump. I remember there was a pirate Goku in a red vest and another racing outfit but I can't find them online.

Awesome stuff. Some of these should be alternate costumes in games!
Tim Duncan is dope and forever.

Very cool!

But where is Goku pre-23rd TB?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I really got a kick out of this thread so far! I'm very interested in how much we can archive here.

I added Kid Goku's story costumes for now. The bonus costumes will come as soon as I can!

Note that just like for Vegeta, I don't consider "naked" as a costume, because you can hardly call that a costume when there's no clothes at all, and it would be impractical to put in any game as an alternative costume (especially when they're grown-ups).
So it's not really interesting in this thread!
DBZGTKOSDH wrote: But where is Goku pre-23rd TB?
I decided he would be better in his own slot, since he would be considered his own character in a game and costumes that fit Adult Goku would not fit Kid Goku and vice-versa.
I'll have to do the same with all characters that grow up: costumes from Adult Goten can't logically be worn by Kid Goten and were not designed with Kid Goten in mind to begin with (including how he evolved psychologically), and the same goes with most characters growing up...
TheGmGoken wrote:Is this for every character?
That would be my ideal objective. 8)
My priority right now is to do it with characters that are usually playable in games, to give an idea of what manga/Toriyama costumes we might want to see included in the future.
But I won't refrain from including non-game characters as well sometimes, to bring a bit of change, and because they also have very interesting looks that deserve to be added to this database!

This is a really cool visual guide, thanks!! It answers something I wondered for a long time, without investigating much and only trying to call various character designs, I always assumed that Toriyama didn't like drawing wrists, as every time I tried to think of an example they had gloves, wrist bands, or long sleeves hiding the wrists, but this has plenty of examples of bare wrists, cheers for answering that (inadvertantly), I always wondered!!

A shame we never got the fan contest and final goodbye outfits as options in the various video games.

Great topic.
Original Dragon Ball full color manga can be found translated?!
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

As promised, the bonus costumes for Kid Goku are here, so check it out, and see what you'd like the most! 8)

If you mean the adventures of Kid Goku, nope, the translation is available in US shops and on the "Mangapolo" Youtube channel, but only starting from Raditz since this is where the printed version starts.

The early adventures of Dragon Ball before the Z era are available in full color, but only digitally for now, and in its original Japanese language only.

Piccolo has been added a few days ago with his 4 story costumes and 3 bonus costumes, but I wanted to have just a little more than that before bumping up the thread.
So you also have Yamcha's 13 story costumes to go with it.

I think Yamcha might be the male with the second most "bonus" costumes. I don't know where you draw the line but the Battle of Gods costumes and even the initial GT costumes were done by Toriyama. There are also the Cross Epoch costumes. Vegeta's pirate emperor look is something I've always wanted to see in games.

Also here is one Goku costume I think you missed. That flickr account has a lot of image scans.

Technically, I think Piccolo has 5 costumes? It might just be an art style issue over time, but Piccolo "Junior" has a rounded neck collar on his dogi and then later on gains the v-neck you have posted after he stops being an evil jerk. lol
