R2-D2 in Dragon Ball..?

Post by Zeshen » Sat May 24, 2014 2:09 am

So I'm sure many of you probably already know about this or have caught this before, but this is the first time I've seen it so I am pointing it out.

In Volume 6, Chapter 69 (I think? I don't have said Volume) when Goku is visiting Capsule Corp. for the first time to get the Dragon Radar repaired, we see a car hooked up to a suspiciously familiar shape in the background of one of the pages.(Bottom panel)

--Edit: Also the ship above the supposed R2-D2 looks a lot like Emperor Palpatine's ship (from Star Wars as well) with it's wings folded up. And in the panel above the "plane" looks very similar to a space shuttle.

Now to me it looks like R2-D2, but it might not be. As Toriyama has drawn Arale in an R2-D2 outfit before I inclined to the former.

Anyways enjoy my little find and tidbit!

Isn't Toriyama a big fan of Star Wars? He even did this little drawing of Anakin Skywalker from episode 1:

Yeah, the very first work he submitted to Jump was a Star Wars parody. Dr. Slump has loads of Star Wars references too.

Who wasn't a Star Wars fan back in the '80s?

If I may answer honestly? My parents... they got tired of it all pretty fast, though now they claim to be huge fans because of how much merch I brought back from conventions for being someone who works behind the scenes and some of the vendors just toss it out if it is "worthless" in their eyes.

Clearly The Star Wars prequels were so enjoyable to him that he has taken cues from them for Dragonball Minus

I don't know if it has before or not, but I tackled it just now, for fun:
Akira Toriyama wrote:"AT LAST!" are my feelings as a new Star Wars is nearly upon us!!

This series, setting aside the story, is incredible in its world's atmosphere and its varied designs, which fired me up quite a bit and had loads of influence on me.

And now here's the fourth installment we've been waiting a lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ong time for. I'm so excited!

Personally, since I have practically no interest in the people in this series, even things like getting to see Darth Vader in his childhood just aren't clicking for me (Ewan McGregor's the only one I have expectations for). After seeing the trailer, I have to say the mecha, robots and aliens are designed pretty well, and the special effects are quite amazing too. I'm sure it's gonna be great! The wait is killing me!
...Well, if he wasn't that interested in the story and human drama, maybe he wasn't as disappointed as most other fans when Episode I did come out...
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

I don't understand why there are so much hate on the prequels, particularly Episode 1. I don't see any problem with it. If someone could explain me in a great detail of why there are so much flames toward it, that would be great.

Poorly directed, nonsensical plot, awful acting (the kid who plays Anakin, Natalie Portman etc), over emphasis on special effect heavy sequences with little care for how it contorts the flow of the narrative, and even more toyetic characters and droid designs than the previous trilogy (Mammy! I want a Pod Racer toy!).

On the plus side, we got an awesome light saber fight. Ray Park was a great piece of casting in that respect.

This.

I can understand how some people might "like" The Phantom Menace, but to claim that there isn't ANY problem AT ALL with it is surprising.

Some may not like the story or human drama, but it's there for people to see it (and appreciate) if they want.

I consider most criticism comes from unfairly high expectations, hipocrisy, misinformation and double standards. No movie is perfect, but the amount of vitriol these movies get by some (and the effort they make to overlook their qualities) is extraordinary.

This website does the job for you in a humorous fashion.

http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-wars/

The video(s) is very tongue-in-cheek and crude, but I believe all the points it makes are completely valid. So, if you have to sit through a long list of something, you might as well enjoy it while you do it.

Same website does Star Trek movies too and a few others. Well worth anyone's time in my opinion.

I don't, since his points are based on speculation and his own subjective interpretation. Most, if not all, of his "arguments" are easily refuted (and already were).

I believe there's also a reference to Super Mario Bros. for the Famicom in that chapter amongst others I imagine.

How are these the problems in the The Phantom Menace? Poorly directed? There are only a couple of mis-casting, but Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Maul, Sidious, Windu all got some great direction for their characters. Is the plot not required to meet Anakin somewhere? The spaceship's hyper drive was damaged because of Trade Federation's space security and had to go to a remote planet like Tatooine where there's no Federation presence and to get it fixed up. That's how they met Anakin. But Tatooine doesn't accept the Republic credits. You know the rest of the plot. The special effects are not so much as emphasized as there are in Revenge of the Sith. But the prequels still required special effects anyway. They are not the same as the originals where the special effects are not as much needed.
