Most of the fights boiled down to just punching, kicking, and "special moves" that are almost exactly like another character's special move, just with a different name and a different color.Fionordequester wrote:Yes they were. Well shit I guess Gurren Lagann fighting sucks. They're always in Gunmen, Yoko always shooting from her gun, and there is always emotions.thatdbzguy wrote:Most of the fights boiled down to just punching, kicking, and "special moves" that are almost exactly like another character's special move, just with a different name and a different color.Fionordequester wrote:Yes they were. Here's another thing the Dragonball series has over many shonens today and that is the characters having common sense.
If a villain kills your friend and asks for forgiveness, they won't give you a second or third chance. Just look at the end of Goku vs Frieza. Now, take Naruto for example. Sasuke left the village for power and then you have Naruto crying over chasing him back. If you have a best friend that betrayed you and tried to kill you not once, but TWICE, then that's wrong in my book. What kind of best friend does that? And the fact that Naruto wants the people to forgive Sasuke for killing people just because of Itachi's "true reason"(which is another reason why I lost interest in that series). As I said before, I liked the Naruto series up until the Shippuden Summit arc because it rehashed the Sasuke love/hate boyfriend BS. The only reason I kept up with it though was because of Obito and after his "reason" of world domination, I stopped reading it for good and just read important parts.

Only I do those things, because people love me, and they despise you....derp!

One Piece is a close 2nd to DB/Z as my favourite anime. Although I'm only as far as Skypiea in One Piece I'm loving it. For me there's so much to love about both series that I find it hard to truly critique either of them. DB doesn't go as over the top with flashbacks as One Piece does sometimes. And DB does have more training scenes than One Piece based on what I've seen of One Piece so far and I really do enjoy training scenes.
I've seen One Piece criticised for being unrealistic in how much damage characters can withstand without dying and then just shake it off later like it was nothing. Personally it's that kind of OTT stuff that I love about One Piece. It channels the same message of "Never give in!" that Dragonball does.

Really? Because there are lord knows how many times characters ignored common sense for the sake of plot.EXBadguy wrote:Here's another thing the Dragonball series has over many shonens today and that is the characters having common sense.

Um...well, just about every single fight scene ever involves rather copious use of your arms and legs. As for the special moves, I disagree with you on that. I mean, we got...
Destructo Disk=A slicing attack that can cut through opponents many times stronger than the user.
Instant Transmission=Instant teleportation
Kaio-Ken=Radical strength increase at the cost of stamina.
Kikoho=Insanely powerful blast that also comes at the cost of the user.
Regeneration=Self-explanatory.
Multi-Form Technique=Clones
Spirit Bomb=Gathers energy from the entire planet into one ball.
Stone Spit=Dabura's technique, which was always an interesting idea.
Candy Beam=Majin Buu's technique.
Solar Flare=Blinds the foe.
Body Swap=Ginyu's technique
Time Stop=Guldo's technique
So actually, there actually were NOT a lot of fights that were just rehashes of the other, at least, not outside of the Cell Saga (which is basically the only saga in DBZ that REALLY fell into the trap of "loud, muscley men screaming and shooting ki blasts at each other for 90 minutes at a time).
