Is King Yama a reference?

Post by samuraix123 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 10:39 am

Hello! Sorry for making so many topics but I just started watching this show called yu yu hakusho and they mentioned someone named King Yama. Is this a reference to Dragonball's King Yemma?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

No, King Enma is in Buddhism the ruler of the underworld or something, so he isn't exclusive to the Dragon Ball series.

Wow! I didn't know that. Thanks buddy! I just heard them say King Yama and just figured it was a reference to King Yemma from Dragonball.

You're welcome :)
Also here is a Wikipedia article, where it's all explained, if you're interested.

Dude that's awesome! I never thought King Yemma was based off of a religion. I just thought he was someone Toriyama made up just to judge people in the afterlife. :) Even though a-lot of my family is christian(except me haha) I do love learning about other people's religious beliefs and this cool. hopefully when I do King Yemma won't pass too harsher sentence on me haha :P

Also in YYH, Koenma's name means "Kid Enma", since he's Enma/Yama/Yemma's kid.

Enma also puts in an appearance in Dr. Slump.

Did he have the same appearance in Dr. Slump or did Toriyama change him in Dragon Ball?

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

He had a different look in Dr. Slump manga/anime, but in The Brief Return of Dr. Slump manga, he looked like he did in DB.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

The Dr. Slump version sticks more closely to traditional depictions of Enma, wearing fancy robes and whatnot, as opposed to the suit he wears in DB.
