I know most fans thought his work was a bit wacky or over the top but hey he still participated in the DBZ right! He might not have been the first Narrator I heard (that goes to Mr. Hebert) but I think there is some nostalgia when you hear is work in the original dub. I'm guessing here but it sounds like he had a blast recording.

Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Mr. Kelly participated in the original Funimation dub as Captain Ginyu and the Narrator from the Ginyu saga to the the end of the Cell Games. He was also involved in the music department for the Bardock Special. (Was he involved with tracks from the tv series?) All of his work has been redubbed for all current releases so unless you grew up with the Toonami broadcast or own the DVD singles some might not even remember him. Most fans remember Kyle Hebert as the Narrator and if your old school it's Doc Harris. Maybe Kelly's Ginyu voice is more memorable? It looks like his only voicework was in the DBZ series. I've always been kind of curious whatever happened to him, why did he leave?

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Dale Kelly, along with two others, worked on the music for both Bardock and Trunks Specials (not counting insert songs, of course).
I don't know what happened to him, either. I don't know if he did any other voice roles, just the Narrator and Ginyu come to mind.
The Remastered Version does leave in Kelly's battle grunts and power up screams, though.

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Oh, to clarify, he had no involvement in the series music.
That would be Nathan Johnson, Bruce Faulconer, Mike Smith, Scott Morgan, and Julius Dobos.

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
I'll admit, when I was a kid I never really payed much attention to the change in narrators. Kyle Hebert's narration definitely sounds more natural and less gravely than Kelly's even if it still is pretty over the top in it's own right. With that said, when it comes to narrators, you can't beat Brice Armstrong in my opinion.
Speaking of narrators, why isn't Doc Morgan reprising his role for Battle of Gods?

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Not quite all of it, actually: Ginyu's battle screams are still Kelly. Guess they thought Brice Armstrong was too old for that stuff. And if that's true, they're pretty lucky his screams only came at the point they changed casts. All of his work has been redubbed for all current releases
...Anyway, I thought I saw Kelly credited for one other dub (Zeta Gundam), but apparently that was another guy. So I guess DBZ is all he's done work for.
Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
I emailed him about three years ago, a few back and forth messages were sent and I eventually asked why he left, he implied to me that he got fired. He said something about wanting to work on the music for all the movies and FUNi told him no, and let him go.

Probably because they're keeping "Z" separate from Kai.WittyUsername wrote:

Wow, totally not a nice move by them. "You're fired cause we want to throw in random rock songs instead."Codarik wrote:I emailed him about three years ago, a few back and forth messages were sent and I eventually asked why he left, he implied to me that he got fired. iirc, he said he made a big deal out of it. So I'm guessing they might've let him go cause of his attitude.

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Wow I didn't know that. While i prefer the original score the music in the specials are pretty good and definitely fit the standard of music Funimation was using at the time. It would of been neat to see what kind of tracks he could of produced. Who knows maybe if the whole music thing didn't happen he still might of been the Narrator. I wonder since he wanted to do more tracks maybe he had a site for music?

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
He doesn't have a website for his music but he does have a website for the production company he owns. http://anindependentview.com/Home_Page.html
I did ask him if he was able to release the soundtracks to the Bardock special, he said he had the master copies of each track but said something along the lines of him possibly getting in trouble with FUNimation since technically they own the music.

I HATE IT when stuff like that happens. Funimation isn't the only company to do this, but they're sitting on unreleased music just like that. It's like they're teasing people by saying they can't have it.Codarik wrote:He doesn't have a website for his music but he does have a website for the production company he owns. http://anindependentview.com/Home_Page.html

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Not sure how accurate wiki(not dbz wiki) is.
left Funimation in 2001 for unknown reasons,
. As of now, Dale's voice has been completely removed from the Dragon Ball series (save for some of Captain Ginyu's battle grunts, which were left in due to Brice Armstrong's age, and a few background voices).

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
Oh cool thanks for the info and for the link Codarik! With all the guys who did the score for the series there's probably a lot of tracks held back by Funimation. It's kind of a shame, maybe someday they'll see the light of day.

He's still my favourite narrator. It's a shame they couldn't leave his work intact on the remastered sets even though Hebert is good too. He put real passion into his performances as Ginyu and the narrator even if it did get a bit camp. You could tell he really enjoyed the roles.

Re: Whatever happened to Dale Kelly?
If they left his narrator voice intact, it'd be inconsistent. We'd have Kyle Hebert for Episodes 1-68, Dale Kelly for Episodes 69-194, and then Hebert again for Episodes 195-291.90sDBZ wrote:He's still my favourite narrator.
