I'm not sure what it is exactly but something about his voice just suits the hardcore feel that Funimation were going for with the show. I like all of the English narrators to an extent but Kelly's voice just had a way of really hyping me up to see the next episode. It's like the end of episode theme was tailor made to fit with his voice. And I always felt like he was just as immersed in the show as I was like when he said "Was that Goku's final attack? And if so, what will happen to him now? Not to mention the rest of our heroes. Find out on the next exciting episode of DRAGON BALL ZEEEEEE!!!".

I also noticed that Hebert tried to impersonate Kelly when he first took over from him. It's actually left intact on the Orange Bricks even though Kelly himself isn't on them.

But that's not the show, it seems like the show was changed to suit his ridiculously cheesy delivery than him fitting the show. When people claim how the terrible changes like the music and the narration had them excited it depresses me just like seeing the box office numbers for Transformers movies.

To me, Dale Kelly is a part of the nostalgia..

I still vastly prefer the Japanese version (and English Kai), but if I'm watching the Z dub at all, it's out of nostalgia, and when things are changed, it takes me out of the nostalgia.

Yeah, I'm no means a fan of their reversioning, but I so strongly disagree with them having spackled over their own version. The fact that it's impossible to purchase an original dub of (real) seasons 3 and 4 is disheartening. Although, honestly, I'm not sure if it annoys me more that they've done it or that the fans of it go on and on about their preference for the orange bricks or the BDs over the DBoxes because nostalgia and seeing it like it was on Toonami... when what they're championing is not, in fact, the same thing at all due to the redubbing. And that's not even getting started on the massive alterations to the video.

So the fact that they replaced Dale Kelley? Fine. But that they effectively erased him from history? Not fine.

Wait, I'm not American so I have a simple question:

Is Dale Kelly the narrator that spoke during Gohan SSJ2's transformation? I've only seen clips on YouTube from curiosity and just wondering. I have always thought that was Kyle Hebert's voice :o

It depends on the clip. That was Episode 184, so Dale Kelly did that first. But Kyle Hebert redubbed that for the Remastered Version, so it could be either one, depending on the clip. I'm honestly surprised there are still so many old dub clips getting uploaded.

Indeed. The "broadcast" audio options should have been the ACTUAL broadcast audio, and the redubbed lines should have went only for the Japanese BGM dub track.

There still would've been some awkward editing if you did the tracks that way because of the way the Ocean dub ended.

Well, that wouldn't really be fair. If they had done that, then the US version would be a complete mess. I chose the US score for my first viewing, but that doesn't mean I'm someone who wants inconsistent voices. If they wanted to relive the glory days, they should just dig up their old recordings or single DVDs.

The random redubbing is inconsistent. If they left it alone, the performances would have a clean break.

As for the editing differences between the first in house dubbed episode, they only change you'd need would be new narration from Hebert for the recap, and possibly the closing for consistency, then from then on everything would fall into place.

It would've been a lot more inconsistent had it been left alone. Sure, some characters sound like they're not trying hard enough once Episode 68 rolls around, but if it had been left intact, the change would be incredibly jarring.

Large portions of the supporting cast had completely different VAs for a while. The Remastered Version keeps the actual voice actors the same (with a few exceptions, like Baba). Voice performances may vary, but the people are the same.

Either way, that's just my opinion. So, let's not get too off topic.

Episode 53 ends in the middle of an episode and moves some footage around, so I'm pretty sure that's not all you would need.

Not really. I believe the DVD singles already largely re-edited the footage so as to avoid most of the syncing issues with the first several episodes of season 3. It only meant that dub episode 54 was extra long because it had the rest of 67 as well as all of 68. After that, everything was synced up. They had to do that so they could use the same video track for both the English and Japanese discs. So it's not ideal at making it the same presentation as the original dub, but it's a lot better than this redubbing nonsense.

I get that one episode will be affected, but it's still a weird to do since it's in the middle of an episode. If you kept the original audio, the episode would begin with 2007 Schemmel and switch to 90's Schemmel halfway through. Then I believe there's the issue of the placement of the scene where Ginyu is practicing new poses.

Well the shift was already jarring on my first viewing of the orange bricks since I watched it on the US audio. I thought they would have kept Nathan Johnson and erase Faulconer from history. That and Jeice and Goku shocked me and brought me back to the old days. I thought they would have been completely redubbed like Vegeta and Krillin and Burter. But, no.

What bugged me was how half hearted Brice sounded as Ginyu compared to Dale Kelly and I longed for Dale Kelly's voice. Hearing his grunts was insult to injury. One of the tapes I owned was Ginyu is Goku and I knew the script, the acting, and the voices by heart. Hearing Brice was awful and a blow to my nostalgia. I asked around on the net wondering where Dale Kelly went, as it seemed like he disappeared off the face of the earth.

It's good to hear he is doing well. I wonder how you folk contact some of these people who aren't in the public eye anymore.

I would like to speak with him someday and I can do a fantastic impression of him too. I'd like to hire him to do some voice work in the future too.

That aside, I always felt he was a standout actor compared to the rest of the cast at the time. He was better than Sabat and Schemmel by far. I think if he was given the ball to continue to play Ginyu he'd be excellent come Kai. He is Ginyu when I hear him. He was so intense but also funny. He fit Ginyu to a tee. That's why I'm not surprised that his grunts were left in. He sounded awesome. That power up scream is so intense that the viewer starts to feel scared and pumped up with adrenaline ready to take Ginyu on.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Yeah, same here. I'm actually still on my first viewing. (Just finished the Cell Games Saga) I was already aware of all this, though, so I was expecting it. I can imagine it being jarring to those who don't know about it, though. I understand the reason for that (why have Johnson rescore the rest when there's already a score synced to the uncut version), but I think it'd be interesting to see how it would've turned out had it not been the case.

Actually, watching starting with Dragon Ball (which I did as well) and going through DBZ, there really aren't any voice inconsistencies until you reach Episode 68 and, well, yeah.

Attitudefan, I completely disagree, Dale was so over the top goofy and awful, Sean was much better. Dale was okay as Ginyu, but terrible as the narrator. The scripts didn't help either. As for your nostalgia, it's better to look forward instead of living in the past.
