There's a distinct difference between the two shows though, namely, that Dragon Ball Z has NEVER taken itself all that seriously,
especially not at the point when aliens were first introduced (remember, we had just gotten off of Dragon Ball, which had it's goofy moments, but was still just escapist fun). So in that way, Dragon Ball and even Dragon Ball Z is more or less the "Indiana Jones" of Japanese manga (outside of a few dark moments of course). Plus, it had also ALWAYS been full of bizarre things, from talking dinosaurs, to talking dogs, to Piccolo (or as my best friend called him, "a giant green pickle"), to dome shaped houses, to capsules that could hold anything and everything, to mermaids, to vampire guys, to mummies...basically anything and everything. So when aliens are introduced, it's really just par for the course.
Naruto, on the other hand, has ALWAYS taken itself very seriously. I mean heck, it's
very first episode is about how Naruto has always been shunned by the townspeople, how some jerkwad tricks him into getting a scroll full of forbidden techniques, then tries to
kill him, only to have Naruto's teacher step in and save him...all really dramatic stuff, right? And then our first major villain? Some psychopath with a huge sword who is so psychotic, that he once killed all of his classmates, and then reflected on how
goooood it felt. And yeah, we had animal spirits, but, even that fit into the show's main theme of mysticism and ninjas and all that...
So, when you throw aliens into DBZ, it's not that big of a shock, because it's not any goofier than what Dragon Ball
already had. But when you throw aliens into
Naruto? The same show that spent it's entire run trying to be all dramatic and stuff? And when you make said aliens major and pivotal characters? Then yeah, that's going to be a little silly!
