Goten's Addressing Gohan in Fansubs

Post by Super Sonic » Sun Jul 13, 2014 8:58 pm

Never saw the old fansubs but was wondering in them when Goten addressed Gohan, did they translate "Big Brother" or did the do like many modern fansubs and left "nii-san" as it was? Was just curious and thinking of it.

I'm fairly sure in the instances I remember of Goten addressing Gohan, he used 'Onii-chan'. At least, in the earlier episodes of the Boo arc, he definitely does.

In the few fansubs from back then that I own, they translated 'Onii-chan' as 'Big bro'.

It seems to be a bit of preference thing with modern groups. Some feel that 'big bro' doesn't quite get the original tone and meaning across whereas others feel it's quite easy to tell based on the relationship of the characters using it.

I'm fairly indifferent on it. I do prefer 'big bro' to be used in Dragon Ball's case though but that's mostly due to me being used to Steve Simmons' translations.

There's a shitty group doing Kai that retained 'Onii-chan' for no other reason than they 'thought it read better'. They also changed 'Super Saiyan Bargain Sale' to something entirely different despite Vegeta saying those lines in English! Oh, and 'Dabla' instead of 'Dabra/Dabura'. Yeah, needless to say, they were dropped very quickly in favour of a far better and more timely group.

That was mostly irrelevant to the topic but yeah, I do wonder whether it was just as much of a preference thing then as it is now. Hopefully others can offer more insight.

Yeah, that's his typical way of addressing Gohan.
Oh, and 'Dabla' instead of 'Dabra/Dabura'.
I've noticed some people when Romanizing things seem to always just switch 'r's to 'l's almost automatically, as if the letter 'r' were simply never used in English.

We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

I took this picture from a tape subbed by Ctenosaur, and it appears that he chooses to translate "onii-chan" as "brother".
