Calling Toei idiots was way too harsh I admit. There wouldn't be a dbz anime without Toei afterall. I guess I like the idea of a freshly animated DBZ so much I went overboard. Maybe I should give Sailor Moon a chance.TheGmGoken wrote:Sailor Moon is VERY popular and guys love it. Toei are not idiots are DB brings in cheap money. Sailor Moon being inactive for quite awhile. SO a reboot is reasonable. Honestly most of DB's recent animation been average at best. Nothing compared to the original art-style. This is coming from someone who's not an animation or art-style greak.ss4songoku wrote:because they're idiots. What's so special about Sailor Moon never could get the appeal then again I am a guy lol. Chicks are cute in it at least haha. DB really needs to be reanimated to follow the manga, that's what kai should have been not that kai isn't great but i'd love to see everything al shiny and new. Sometimes DBZ is animated beautifully other times it looks downright awful, the inconsistency in the animation really bugs me. I know for sure it will happen one day but not anytime soon maybe 10 to 15 years.
Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?

Admins dont like non-DB discussions I think.ParkerAL wrote:Seeing people use this thread to talk about the current Sailor Moon series got me wondering: why doesn't this site have an non-Dragon-Ball-related section for talking about other anime/comics/movies/ect?
This thread is comparing Toei's handling of Kai vs Crystal, so I guess that is why it gets away with it.

I know the conversation has started steering almost exclusively toward talking about Crystal in a vacuum, but as has been noted, it really can't. Conversation must be related to Dragon Ball in some way, as the topic was originally intended. Thanks!

So would you guys have liked it if DBZ Kai recasted everyone except for Nozawa, like Crystal did?

It`s hard to tell, because i didn`t really liked replacement actors (Especially Nappa, he sounded like dumb tough guy from 80s cartoons, and almost every Ginyu Force sounded like Recoome from Funimation dub, really annoying) But, if they hired better actors, then yes, i wouldn`t mind replacement, most old seiyuu sounded really forced.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
They aren't reanimating Sailor Moon. They're doing a new series that closer to the original manga.
Sailor Moon is unlike Dragon Ball in that Sailor Moon's manga is totally different from the anime (character introductions, deaths of characters, events that happen, etc.) This is NOT simply a reanimation of the old show, it is a totally new animation that is closer to the manga, and the creator's manga art style (anyone who has read the manga of Sailor Moon will tell you the art style is totally different between the two formats).
Dragon Ball is different in that it is a straight adaptation of Toriyama's manga, with filler added in. So basically they just need to take out the filler segments to make it closer to the manga, not reanimate it outright.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Dragon Ball with no Ryou Horikawa? Oh no, I just don't think I could accept that! I was quite upset that most of the Sailor Moon cast was replaced, and though the new voices sound pretty good based on the first episode, I know I'll probably end up listening to scenes and thinking "ah, what would this have sounded like with Tohru Furuya instead?" So even if Nozawa was still in the cast, I would just miss the other voices too much to fully embrace the show (I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up preferring the old Sailor Moon anime over the new one due to nostalgia, plus the fact that I was always more of a fan of the anime than the manga anyway).
Kinda weird that Japan's going with all these recastings lately...Kai seems to be the exception for not doing it. There's a new Initial D movie coming out that has a new cast, despite the fact that the final episodes of the show aired less than a month ago. Maybe they found the old cast too 90s throwback (I mean, 3 of the Weiss crew were major characters). But it still seems like a slap in the face to the seiyuu who very recently played those characters. Though Mamoru Miyano is in the new cast, so the fangirl in me can't complain too much...

Enter: Kai. I get why so many fans would want a new version of the anime with HQ modern animation, but as an adaptation of the manga, Kai is almost perfect lol. So the only real difference would be animation quality, I don't think that's enough reason to redo exactly the same thing. Sailor Moon situation like you said is very different.TTC817 wrote:Dragon Ball is different in that it is a straight adaptation of Toriyama's manga, with filler added in. Have you seen how crappily Battle of Gods and Episode of Bardock are drawn? And these are movies/OAVs.
I can't imagine how bad a reanimated long-series would look, with the strict budget Toei uses.

...That's an in-between frame. It's on-screen for 1/24 of a second, and it's from the best animated scene in the movie. Seriously, take a look at that scene there again how it actually looks in motion and tell me it looks "crappy". There might be a lot of really bad animation in Battle of Gods, but the scene that screenshot is from is not one of them.Flame Dragon wrote:Which would probably be worse.

Yeah, i know. But that frame probably sums up the entire quality of the drawings of Toei as of late.Vegard Aune wrote:...That's an in-between frame. If you want to pick a badly drawn scene, you could try Gohan from the OVA 2008.Flame Dragon wrote:Which would probably be worse.

The only thing of Sailor Moon that I want are the new upcoming Viz DVDs and that's it. I'm skipping the Sailor Moon Crystal because the animation just doesn't do it for me.
Spoiler:
I'd be disappointed if Dragon Ball got turned into this but then again I wouldn't watch it and I'm yet to give Battle of Gods a watch (when FUNimation releases it on Blu-ray).
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

You've confused an off-model in-between for bad animation. Off-model is a thing very much different from 'bad animation'.

Thanks for this, although Gohan in comparison would still look worse than that Goku shot.JulieYBM wrote:You've confused an off-model in-between for bad animation. Off-model is a thing very much different from 'bad animation'.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Mamoru sounds like Yamcha, but Tuxedo Kamen doesn't.
Episode #2 the editing got better but the ending parts felt rushed.
There were some inconsistencies in the animation where the faces went off-model, too.

We already got the answer for this quesion. Because they want to use their money in new material for DBZ
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
SMC 2 was more enjoyable for me than episode 1. Ami's voice doesn't sound as much like Cure Peace as I'd feared, but still not as elegant as her old voice actress portrayed. It's not bad. I feel like Umino is shorter this time. The floppy was actually a disc in the manga, so it's both adhering to the source and updating tech. So strange seeing Usagi with a laptop, but the way she used it was very in-character. Still missing Tuxedo Yamcha. Mercury's transformation is a little better than Usagi's, but I've still seen way better cgi transformations on Precure. I guess they made Ami the only one in the classroom so to save time animating the rest of the class? The class was full in the manga and first series. Also we actually got some SD Usagi when she was hiding from the guards. I so miss the SD and expressions, sorely.
Watching this though, I am happy that most new animation efforts on DB are going to new sequences rather than treading old ground. If BOG 2 has to have cgi in there somewhere I hope they get the guys who are working on HaCha instead of SMC.
