Akira Toriyama's Star Wars Tribute
Here's a translation of Akira Toriyama's Star Wars Tribute from 1999, along with the background story.
Took 15 years to get a translation, but I think it's interesting. Gives some insight into how his mind works.

"It’s going to be really fantastic!"
Oh dear. I wonder what his thoughts were after watching Episode I.
Anyway, kudos for your translation & write up, Derek!

You're welcome.
I suspect he was just as disappointed as the rest of us, because who couldn't be? But given that the mech designs and vehicles were still rather interesting, it's possible he enjoyed it.

Oh, those parallels between Episode 1 and Dragonball Minus.
But yeah, thanks for this, Derek. I had read Kenisu's earlier translation, but the background and context stuff you did were all really neat, too.

Re: Akira Toriyama's Star Wars Tribute
I too would be interested to see what Toriyama thought of it after seeing the movie.
Interesting that he apparently liked Ewan McGregor though, wonder what he knew him from?
That said though, and I realize this is "blasphemous" (but I'm only a lukewarm Star Wars fan anymore anyway), but...I don't hate Episode I. It's not perfect, but it's still a fine enough film IMO. And I'm one of the odd one's out that actually likes Jar Jar Binks (and Scrappy for that matter), and feel he gets far too much undue hate.
I can't defend Episode II though, and need to re-watch III (which I've only seen once), though. II was the real pile of crap.

Well damn!Personally, I don’t have much interest in the people in this series,
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Me too, I honestly wonder if the Star Wars prequels ever crossed his mind when he went back to Dragonball with Jaco and DB-.
Off topic, but I never really understand the hate for Jar Jar. A lot of the guys who hate the character for being annoying and toyetic also tend to love C3PO and R2D2, who of course, totally aren't at all annoying or toyetic.Gyt Kaliba wrote:That said though, and I realize this is "blasphemous" (but I'm only a lukewarm Star Wars fan anymore anyway), but...I don't hate Episode I. Gimme a break! Star Wars is one of the most intentionally toyetic franchises in history! It has been since day one - why do you think Lucas kept the merchandising rights?

I...I don't often admit this about Star Wars but I'm with Gyt Kaliba on this - I don't outright hate Episode I. I don't think it's a particularly good film but some of its final scenes are some of my favourites from the franchise. I think it's probably a nostalgia thing as it was the first Star Wars film I got to see in the cinema as well as the only film I ever saw with my late Granddad. But hey ho, it's an enjoyable ride even if the sequel is absolutely garbage. At least Episode III makes up for it!
Uh..ahem...Dragon Ball and stuff.

I too actually like Episode 1. It's not a patch on the original trilogy but it's an enjoyable film and has probably the best lightsaber battle in the franchise. Not to mention Darth Maul was pretty awesome. The only two detractions were Jar Jar Binks and the whole Annakin blowing up the trade federation ordeal.

Re: Akira Toriyama's Star Wars Tribute
This doesn't really have anything to do with Dragon Ball. Closing. Sorry!
