Actually, I had forgotten my hope that maybe they'd have something at these showings announcing the home release after the movie finished or something, but I'm guessing there was nothing of the sort...hmm...guess I can still pin my hopes on something like that coming out of the final day's showings, but I'm doubtful.
Home. Release. FUNi. I needs it. My body needs it. My SOUL needs it. Grr.

It's probably gonna be released some time before the year ends. I mean, it's already been said that it's coming out in the UK in December.

So far I can agree with everyone's theatre experience being excellent! Watching it at the Regal in San Antonio Texas, we got the same applause from the opening credits, laughs from the humor (especially the ones involving Trunks and Mai
) and silence over many of the tense, dramatic moments. Everyone from hardcore fans to casual fans all could enjoy this experience together and it was all I was hoping for! I guess that means I can no longer be bitter about seeing a clip of the spanish dubbed BoG in theatres way before the english dub anymore :p
The dub was simply brilliant too! The way the dialogue was spiced up was very well done and didn't hinder anything. The crowd (myself included) was quite surprised with drunk Bulma's line "let's turn this mother up!" or something to that effect. I'm sure there were some people who might have been thinking "how far does the language go?" during that line before she stopped at "mother", especially considering the "damn" and "bastard" had already been used. I know that the usual "damn" and "bastard" are seen as standard for the Kai dub, but it's probably something that may come as a surprise to many casual fans used to the Z dub. But I loved it either way; it successfully infused a lot of today's lingo to feel like a current dub from 2014.
Of course my absolute favorite funny line came from the end of the movie where after everyone wishes happy birthday to Bulma one last time, a trolling Oolong yells out "38 IS REALLY FREAKING OLD!"
All in all, it was an amazing time! Hell I might do it again tomorrow

Got back from the movie.
Things I noticed:
1) The IGN chick that did the review for the movie TOTALLY asspulled everything she said and clearly didn't see it.
2) I love that Hercule literally says "I must have blacked that out" when referring to how he forgot Dende was the guardian of earth.
3) Kaio says that once Beerus was given a nasty look and in return he destroyed a small cluster of galaxies. (Holy fuck... The "he's a galaxy buster" fans are going to have a field day with this.)

Blu-ray.com lists the blu-ray version as coming out in Fall 2014. Not sure if it's credible or not, but it seems like a reasonable time-frame to release the home version in North America.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:It's probably gonna be released some time before the year ends. Also according to that IGN review, there was filler in the movie??
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
That IGN review is the stupidest thing I've read in a while from them. It reads like a high school report rather than something from a professional outlet. "Campy filler"?! Did they even watch the damn thing?

Well they are kinda right. Since some of the gag scenes feel really forced, and unrelated to the plot.
You could remove the entire Pilaf subplot and the movie would be the exact same.

It didn't mean 'filler' in the anime community sense of the word, but more in the sense that it was a subplot that they felt was padding out the run time as opposed to adding to the main narrative.SaiyanBaller22 wrote:Also according to that IGN review, there was filler in the movie??
The Pilaf Gang and Party Scenes are pretty campy. I don't see what's so objectionable about the use of that term.AjayLikesGaming wrote:"Campy filler"?! Did they even watch the damn thing?

Yup Pilaf and co and then the whole Bingo nonsense was completely campy and the movie would have been much better if it wasn't there.

Glad to hear the praise the dub is getting. Also glad to see it getting a release in NZ and every capital city in Australia EXCEPT for Darwin. Seriously we got screenings for the Wind Rises, why not this? I feel like I'm living in Inaba without the cool TV World. Madman are Asshole's as if the expensive pricing wasn't enough. The more reason to import my anime from Amazon. Well these clips are all I got till November. Darwin sucks, no Supernova Expo, no Battle Of Gods.

The campy line is fine, it's the filler description I find ridiculous. It reeks of the whole notion that anything that isn't fighting is filler in Dragon Ball.Blade wrote:The Pilaf Gang and Party Scenes are pretty campy. I don't see what's so objectionable about the use of that term.
Without Pilaf & Co, you don't get the entire build up to Beerus' eventual temper tantrum that causes the climax of the film. You don't get the major plot point that Videl is pregnant. Their being there is an essential part of the film.
"But I wish I could have blasted a Kamehameha through all the campy filler plaguing almost half the film."
That tells me everything I need to know about the reviewer. They have no concept of what the series is and are only interested in constant action. It's frustrating to read uninformed reviews like this.

Dragonball is a lot of things to a lot of people, and I guess that the reviewer is an example of the majority of the old school American Toonami fans who only really experienced the fight intensive sagas of Dragonball Z and GT (not helped at all by the fact that Funimation initially held the Black Star Dragonball hunt back).AjayLikesGaming wrote:That tells me everything I need to know about the reviewer. The reviewer has probably never seen Dragonball, never read the Manga and never seen the show in Japanese. Whilst it's easy to point the finger at such a person for spreading misinformation, you gotta keep in mind that what we're seeing here is merely a view that will probably be shared by the absolute majority of American Dragonball Z fans who watch Battle of Gods out of nostalgia for the Toonami days.
Basically, these guys aren't like us. It's not the job of every reviewer to educate the masses on a history of a franchise which was given a very different portrayal in America than it was originally Japan, but merely to give their impression on what they see. It's a bit like a modern music reviewer giving a write up about a reunion show of an old school Punk band that they never experienced in their prime or in the context of the music scene that the band was born out of. There's no such thing as a Universal perspective on these sorts of things, and frankly that has to be a good thing - else it would make a subjective venture like a 'review' pointless.
Basically, I don't think it's anything to get het up or angry about. It's barely relevant to our fan demographic, so just ignore it and move on.

I'm not really sure how it's "campy" either. I understand if people don't like the Pilaf bits, but I think that adjective should really be used with more care.AjayLikesGaming wrote:The campy line is fine, it's the filler description I find ridiculous.

Yeah I'm quite disappointed in the fans who didn't like the 'campy' scenes, Dragon Ball IS camp and always has been. They're not comparable to the boring unfunny 'comic relief' filler, because it's written by Toriyama and is actually entertaining. And it makes the climax of Beerus snapping all the more satisfying as well.

I really don't see how the term isn't applicable. The scenes in question are silly, pompous and ridiculous moments of light humour - exactly what is contentious about the use of the word 'camp' as way of encapsulating those descriptions?Herms wrote:I'm not really sure how it's "campy" either. As someone who currently does amateur journalism for varying companies and plans to work professionally in future, I have to say, I hold a very different view on this.Blade wrote:It's not the job of every reviewer to educate the masses on a history of a franchise which was given a very different portrayal in America than it was originally Japan, but merely to give their impression on what they see. I feel like it's the job of a journalist to be informed on what they're reviewing. I wouldn't dare touch something I wasn't informed on because otherwise I'm not putting forward a well thought out and researched opinion. I'm simply speaking like any other person does as though they were at a bar with friends. That's not journalism at all. I feel like journalism should be partly educational and partly opinion-based. Help the reader understand the thing you're reviewing before throwing your opinion out there.
There's no reference to the point of the film - it was the first Dragon Ball film in 17 years and its intentions are very clearly all about celebrating the franchise while opening up new material for the future. It doesn't talk about anything relating to production or its significance, heck, it barely even reviews the film. It's such an amateur read that I couldn't help but cringe.
"I thought"
This is a written review, there's no need to refer to yourself; you just write. This isn't some high school report! She spends half the review just describing the plot with various interjections here and there. It's absolutely garbage. I understand this is just a written version of the script for her video but c'mon; it's downright embarrassing.
"Even Emperor Pilaf and his lackeys Shou and Mai from Dragon Ball show up for a silly side-plot."
"A silly side-plot". Did she just forget how that 'side-plot' ties into the entire film.
I have no problem with someone disliking this film and I've seen many perfectly adequate and well thought-out reasons for doing so but this is certainly not one of them. It's a high school report crying about a lack of action.
