Who was the artist who did a lot of the official 90s artwork

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Just have to stop in and say how much I love this thread.

Reminds me of my childhood seeing these pictures again, as I plastered them all over my school books!

Thanks!

Had this image on a T-shirt when I was 10.

Except it was all a blue and grey color scheme.

Also, first Illustration I've seen by Naotoshi Shida:

Update today finally, with a couple of things I had on the "wanted list" a few pages ago in this thread.

Today was "Gogeta Day" apparently.

But along with that update comes a few more items to add to the wish list:

Image

Pretty certain that this one's cropped, obviously.

Image

Image

There's a very large, nice resolution, but cropped version of this SSJ3 Goku poster up on the blog. This is what a much more uncropped version of the image looks like.

Can't believe I forgot about this one. Fairly ubiquitous image at one time.

Most of these pics come from calendars. Some of the art I have never seen elsewhere. Perhaps someone can track down better quality versions:

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, a bunch of those are either already up on the blog (in better quality) or already on the wish list a few pages ago. Or in some cases sitting on my hard drive in roughly the same quality, which isn't really good enough for the blog (not that I'm blaming you for that last one). A few of those however I will try to use to try and help me track down better quality versions, so thank you kindly all the same.

The GT ones are another story: I've got a bunch/most of those, I just haven't posted them cause I spent way too much time on the fence of whether or not I was gonna include GT at all. But considering the interest several people have shown (including in my submissions box on tumblr) I might as well just say "fuck it", gather up my GT stuff, and include those too. Expect that to happen fairly soon.

But just to reiterate to some folks, before making a submission be sure to check whether or not I already have something up on the page, and if I do, be sure that yours is in better quality than the one I have up (a fairly good number of posts now have a request with them for better quality versions of them). We're currently up to about 172 posts (!!) believe it or not: I know that may sound like a daunting number to sift through for the more slacker-inclined, but if you click on "archive" at the top of the page it'll give you a much, much easier way to quickly browse through every post. Some of the best stuff on the blog are further back towards the beginning as well.

The link for the page is right there in my sig.

I'm glad you found one that decent. I know there's a full body version in existence as well:

I'd love to have a very good quality version of this image as complete as possible, since I remember seeing so many variations of it years ago.

I recognize the way he draws ears, auras, and his color shading style. This also looks like his work with the Last House Animation influence. It's weird but I know it when I see it.

Ah, I do see what you mean about the ears. His ears remind me of that cut of Gokuu struggling to get out of the rocks falling on him in Battle of Gods. Very interesting.

I'm 100% sure that it's his. You can also recognize his style by the vertical depth of jaws.

Hey, hey, hey! Look what I just found using Google's reverse image search!

Image

Found it on some French Saint Seiya site of all places (though I didn't click the link. I just followed the image URL. :P) That "DBZ Collection" is a tad annoying, but not really intrusive. I went ahead and submitted it, and I hope Kunzait accepts it.

You requested a good version of it, while showing a really low quality reference image. Just wondering if you have that one.

Believe it or not, I actually found that image not five or ten minutes after my last post in this thread via more or less the same means as you. I was reluctant to post it mainly due to the “dbzcollection” thing in the corner as well as all the carddass junk along the sides. I'm generally trying to keep all the scans and images in the blog as “clean” as humanly possible. The quality of the scan otherwise is great definitelty. I may yet take you up on posting that submission, but I'll wait a bit to see if I can find a better alternative first.

That was the main image I was thinking of when I mentioned a few I would try to use to find better versions of them. The only thing really keeping me from posting that one is all the calender stuff, because again I'm trying to get as clean a version of all these as I can find. But once again, if I can't find something else within a certain period of time, I'll likely post it.

A great many thanks once again folks for any and all help with this, especially since the request is coming from a former and lapsed member.

Haha! I see. Don't feel pressured by my submission. In fact, I'll probably try to "edit" it out with Photoshop, since those details it obfuscates are very simple.

Massive updates to the blog over the last few days. We're staring straight down the barrel of almost 200 posts now. Be sure to give a huge round of applause to MetalWario64 by the way folks. He's been by far the biggest MVP for helping me salvage a ton of these images.

But with that comes another round of "wanted posters" for these things. Same as before: if you already have or somehow eventually come across any of these in non-dumpy/cropped quality, send them in to the blog. Most of these I know for damn sure were once around in vastly better quality.

Image

The un-cropped version of this:

Also while just about close to every single movie poster is up now, we've still got about three major holdouts: DBZ movies 12, 13, and the alternate version of 8.

The best I've been able to get for all of them are these:

Image

This one WOULD be just about fit for posting were it not for the stupid watermark running through it.

Image

You may note that there's a few more easily findable versions of the movie 12 poster in higher resolution than this, but that a lot of those are fairly heavily cropped.

Image

The version of this that's up on the blog is a cutout that removes the backgroud and features only the characters. The "whole" poster complete with background (text or textless is fine, but textless is somewhat preferable) is what I'm after here.

By the way, yes I know I still haven't added anything from GT yet. That's still definitely forthcoming.

That "greatest hero of 20th century" is something else. X3
You don't normally see real-life time referenced in DB stuff.

Can't wait. Those are all really amazing so thanks for that.

By the way, is there perhaps a way to search for specific images? I see they're all tagged and I'd like to make use of that.

Believe it or not, that slogan was on a whole TON of the old posters and shitajiki images. I only have two other examples here to offer besides that one (one of which has already been up on the blog for awhile now) but it was a pretty common sight on an awful, awful lot of 90s Japanese DBZ artwork, along with a bunch of other heavily Engrish-ified little blurbs about the series.

Image

Image

Seriously though, try counting the number of times you find fun little word-salad tone poems on a bunch of these images like "It had passed for 5 years since the awful and terrible battle of Tenkaichi Budokai". Or the even more popular "Evil Cell constantly watches you from the land above. There's absolutely nothing you can do, and there's nowhere you can run away, once you're caught in the hands of evil Cell. Now, the eternal darkness comes." That one was also featured prominently on a DBZ poster I bought at a New York basement sale circa 1994. Oh, and of course the almost weirdly religious-sounding "Thanks to the father and the son of the Sons, the earth was peaceful again."

A lot of the same ones keep cropping up, trust me.
