Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
Don't like it.
- Too much dialogue. When I say this, I'm talking about that scenes where is supposed to simply enjoy the scene with the BGM. In this dub, these moments barely exist because they added pointless quotes to fill it.
- Out of Character. Goku the perfect example for this one. Goku in this dub, in some moments, couldn´t be more out of his character. That DC hero attitude really pissses me off.
"...I am protector of the innocent. I am the light in the darkness blablabla" Cliche. Goku isn't like that. And thats why when some of these guys saw Battle of Gods didn't understand his character behavior at all.
- Bad sountracks. I know they already released some remastered versions with the original soundtracks but I didn't like how they ignored it the first time and thought they knew the series better than japanese staff.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
I actually thought the 2002ish dub I have on my single DVDs is alright (the Cell arc); it's the "Remastered" dub on the Orange bricks I despise. The overall performances, added dialogue and Bruce Falconer music really make me hate it. Sabat, Nadolny and Schemmel are terrible VAs, terrible!
At least the Westwood dub had reasons to be shitty - lack of a budget, a rushed schedule and a strict governing body on their backs. But at least they had good VAs for the most part. I'll stick with that and the Japanese dub for my DBZ fix. And yes, this is really my honest opinion.

Anyway: I didn't think much of Funi's DB dub. I'll give 'em props for using the original BGM, but I can't stand Nadolny as Goku.

Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
I really like the dub. While I like the Japanese cast better, I might even enjoy it more than the original because of the script. I enjoy it more than the Japanese for more humorous parts, but once it gets to the King Piccolo arc, I prefer the Japanese. I still really enjoy the dub in the serious parts though and wouldn't problem if it was all I got. Sometimes, the acting was too serious in the Japanese, so it made me more uncomfortable with a lot of the pervy jokes, whereas the dub was more over the top and it had lines changed to be more tasteful for me. I really like the whole cast as well. My favorite voice was Kuririn's! They did an excellent job getting a voice to match his adult voice.

The English dub (FUNimation) of Makafushigi Adventure is really catchy and sweet but I wish they'd have used the original instruments (like Harmony Gold dub's done it) because it sounds like what they recorded was for a live concert.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
I would've liked to see Stephanie reprise her role as Goku, and possibly even Gohan. I'm curious to how she would do nowadays. IMO, she definitely showed improvement between the original Funi DBZ dub and the Remastered sets of Season 1 and 2, and to be completely honest, while Colleen may be the better actress, I still find her voice far more grating to listen to than Stephanie's.
Not saying that Colleen was a terrible choice to play as Gohan, mind you. She does a good job as Gohan, it's just that her voices for young male characters tend to aggravate my eardrums. (Although I guess you could argue that that makes her performance as 5-year-old Gohan more believable).
I will say that I LOVE her voice for #18, though.

Cuz his performance in the first 3 Pioneer Dub Movies was by far the Best English Goku

It was by far the best dub of anything DB related, ever.

(You didn't actually have to, but you don't even specify what dubbed language you're talking about, making the claim that much bolder!)

Disagree, the first 3 uncut movies by Ocean were the best DB Dub ever, closely followed by Kai.gohann wrote:It was by far the best dub of anything DB related, ever.

Including Kai? If so, that's simply not true if we're just going on accuracy of scripts alone. It was by far the best dub of anything DB related, ever.

There's also the voice work, and the themes.ABED wrote: Including Kai? If so, that's simply not true if we're just going on accuracy of scripts alone.
Then again, I think Dragon Ball is better than DBZ as a whole.

Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
I agree about the music, but that's just because they kept Kikuchi's score. The acting is certainly better than DBZ's, but not Kai's. For one, you have Nadolny and Vollmer in lead roles. Vollmer's much less grating in DB, but still annoying to listen to.gohann wrote:There's also the voice work, and the themes.ABED wrote: Including Kai? Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
What is wrong with Goku and Bulma's voices? Save for the original DBZ dub, Tiffany Vollmer was a great Bulma -- how can you say she's grating, but not Monica Rial, who is an imitation of her? Not to mention that Monica Rial's voice for her, while almost as good, gets too exaggerated at times. Stephanie Nadolny is a great Goku, she captures all facets of his personality. Her voice is age-appropriate, and her acting is great. The two actresses play off of each other perfectly.

Re: Opinions on the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball
I concur entirely but the problem with the FUNimation dub of Dragon Ball is that it wasn't very accurate, otherwise I'd have really liked it but it's still a very enjoyable dub nevertheless.gohann wrote:What is wrong with Goku and Bulma's voices? Hopefully if FUNimation does re-dub Dragon Ball then it's with Nadolny again not Colleen.

I like Kelamis but I can agree he's not the best English speaking Goku, he's very hit and miss for me, for example in Movie 3 some lines sound pretty bad/cringe worthyABED wrote:I think Kai edges them out, but it's a tight race.thomas1up wrote:Disagree, the first 3 uncut movies by Ocean were the best DB Dub ever, closely followed by Kai.gohann wrote:It was by far the best dub of anything DB related, ever.

"I'll make you pay for what you've done!" sounds so weird and unnatural to me, on the flipside in Movie 2 imo he does a great performance and the way he shouts Kaio-Ken is in my opinion the best English Kaio-Ken ever.
