BTW: The reason certain any of Funimation's videos are region locked is because they only own the license in the United States. As such, they are not legally allowed to broadcast/stream videos to other countries. It's a legality thing and they're likely even more annoyed with it than any of us.

There's also the Australian release (which has a horrendous cover) plus the Italian (and the Spanish within sometime this year) so getting Battle of Gods on Blu-ray that has Region B is entirely possible.Super Saiyan Swagger wrote:Oh yeah, I didn't think of that. Thanks
Manga UK's Collector's Edition isn't all that interesting but it comes with 5 cards, slipcover and a DVD with extras (probably the same exact ones from FUNimation's release).
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Would have been amazing from Novaga everyone coming back to dub it, even getting new actors to replace António Semedo and all that would be cool. Let's hope atleast we get the next movie.

Doubt it. if we didn't have BOG he won't have the next one either. I had hope because back then in 90's, we had Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon in theatres. The first Pokemon movies too. Now, things changed and seems like its just a dream.Quebaz wrote: *Cries a little bit inside*

Well there is still a chance, maybe when the next movie comes out they'll release the 2014 movie in Portugal. Also I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD for battle of Gods.
"There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause troubles without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood… and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others: They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they’ve never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them… because in truth, I am that monster."

One of those times I'm glad I managed to get a Blu-Ray player I could switch regions on.
Just realised it has mostly been used on anime and samurai movies. ^-^

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
Just finished watching the Blu-ray and checking out the dub for the first time.
That was an interesting experience. I've not watched the show in English in quite a long time now so some of the voices were quite alien to me - Gohan and Dende in particular are very masculine compared to their Japanese counterparts. They definitely hit my ear quite strangely despite the performances themselves being fine.
As the film opens, we have Kaioshin and Elder Kaioshin discussing Beerus' arrival. I was pleasantly surprised to hear how great they both sounded. Vocally, they're quite close to the original performances and their acting certainly carried the opening of the film nicely.
Moving onto Kaio's planet, we have Schemmel talking to himself for a good 10 minutes or so. On one hand, we have Kaio (or King Kai) who is just...awful. It's a shame that voice is still present since it really lets down what is actually a very faithful dub on the whole. On the plus side, his Goku is perfect in this scene. That goofy, happy-go-lucky side of Goku is something that Schemmel has absolutely perfected now. I was getting very strong hints of Nozawa through those scenes and that can only be a good thing.
We're then given our introductions to Whis and Beerus. The trailers for the dub really put me off Beerus despite me finding Whis to be pretty much spot-on. Fortunately, I think that was just a case of bad editing or me being far too used to Yamadera's take. These early comical scenes are done very nicely. Douglas and Sinclair bounce off of each other nicely and their dynamic is captured equally as well as the original. The only time I found Douglas to really be an issue was during the serious moments of the film. Yamadera's range from portraying this comical cat-creature into this fearful Hakaishin is severely undervalued, I think. Douglas really lacks the same feeling of terror that I found present in the original. Part of that is certainly script related - some of the more fearful lines in the subtitles are simply too long to fit the mouth flaps in English. Perhaps a better job could have been done in certain areas there.
Next up we have Sabat and his portrayal of everyone primarily Vegeta and Shen Long. To put it simply, the man just cannot act to the same level that everyone else has matured to at this point. While his voice for Vegeta is near perfect now, lacking any of the unnatural gravel of old, his delivery is just plain poor. It almost feels like someone doing a caricature of the character than it actually being the character himself. It was an issue I had with Kai and it's still an issue now. Certainly not awful by any means but compared to his co-stars, he really doesn't shine.
Regarding Shen Long (or Shenron), I don't really understand the decision making process for this one. They've removed the old pitch change and extreme reverb effect in favour of Sabat just putting on a deep voice with some small effects to add some gravitas to it. It really doesn't work. It literally just sounds like someone in a room putting on a comically deep voice. Kai and Z's version was fine, there was no need to change it.
Nothing too much to say on Pilaf and co. really. Huber does a fine job and while I found Mai's voice a tad young sounding and Shu's strong accent a bit odd, it wasn't anything distracting or worth getting upset about. Their whole section was absolutely fine and I didn't find any of the jokes suffered in the translation process really.
Trunks appears! And my god, I was really impressed in the small clips FUNi put out but seeing the performance in full, I have to say, wow! Bailey's Trunks is so good nowadays. Really great performance and certainly up there in my favourites for this dub. My opinion on Edwards' Goten is...probably influenced by my lack of familiarity with the dub voice. At this point, I find it very hard to accept anyone but Nozawa for that character and so hearing the slightly raspy, older sounding version of the character that Edwards' portrayal has was...not nice. I didn't really find her delivery of his naive lines quite as funny as the original. I'll be interested to hear what you guys think about her portrayal. Is it just me not being used to the character or was it just not that great?
Next up we have Rial's portrayal of Bulma. I have absolutely nothing but praise for her. She was great in Kai and she's even better now. She is the perfect English equivalent of Tsuru and they are absolutely on par with each other for this dub. Really, really pleased with her performance 100%.
Moving into the serious section of the film, we have Goku vs. Beerus in its full glory. Unfortunately, this is where Schemmel, who so far has been near-perfect for me, starts to falter a little. His speech about his disdain for the God form just sounded incredibly amateur. I brought it up during its appearance in the trailers and many disagreed but I still feel the same way. Compared to his performance in the rest of the film, it just sounds bad. Once they reach the caves though, he picks right back up again into the professional territory.
It's in this cave though that I came across the first instance of a line really suffering from a poor script. "I will not let your destroy my world" comes out as 'I willnotletyoudestroy MY WORLD'. It is rushed, awkward and in need of a desperate rewrite. There's gotta be some way of phrasing that line that doesn't require reducing such a powerful line into a rushed mess. Really not great stuff there. Thankfully it's only one of a few instances but the fact it happened during such a key moment is a real shame.
Following the fight we have Beerus and Goku talking. Perfectly fine. Schemmel gets to show off goofy Goku again and everybody's happy! Woo.
The film ends with Goku doing a hilarious impression of Vegeta. Highlight of the dub for me.
If Kai was a 6.5 or 7 then this is easily an 8 or possibly an 8.5 depending on how I feel about Gohan and Goten's voice after a few more watches.
Oh, and having Motoko Kusagani's dub actress as the Policewoman was fantastic too. That took me by total surprise.
--------------
I have a few things to say regarding Steve Simmons' subtitles actually. 'Beerus the Destroyer' is not just a dub thing. That is what he is using in the subtitles (well, he uses Beers but you get the idea).
Yeah...no. I don't like that. It doesn't fall in line with his previous translations and I don't think it meshes well at all. We have Kaioshin, Kaio, Muten Roshi, Kami and an endless amount of names/titles that have been left alone. I assumed it would be left as 'Hakaishin' or at the very least 'God of Destruction'. While I understand that it's not a wrong translation, I'm still very disappointed by this decision.
Fortunately, it's very easy to convert PGS subs into SRT and a quick find and replace produces something I'm happy with!

Huh. If I recall correctly, the Hong Kong BD subs also used 'the destroyer' for hakaishin (Bills the Destroyer in that case, which drove me up a wall because of the former more so than the latter).

Is there some precedent in theology/religion/fiction where it's translated as "destroyer" that we are just missing? It seems weird to do that if you're going to go with "god of creation" right alongside it, though.

Yeah, it's definitely something I'd love to get some clarification on from Mr. Simmons.
I have very few guesses other than what you've mentioned. I guess 'The Destroyer' has some relation to old legends and their names. Weird theme to run with though.

Maybe from ‘Shiva the Destroyer’ of Hindu religion? He is known as Hakaishin in Japanese…
Japanese wikipedia:
シヴァは教学上は破壊神であるが、民間信仰ではそれにとどまらない様々な性格を持ち、それに従って様々な異名を持つ。
English wikipedia:
He is one of the five primary forms of God in the Smarta tradition,[2] and "the Destroyer" or "the Transformer"[4] among the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity of the primary aspects of the divine.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
I did some research just now and it seems it's also present in Christian mythology. The notion of a 'destroying angel' or 'The Destroyers' is brought up a lot. "The Destroyer" (literally 'ha-mashḥit' in Hebrew) was someone who killed many inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Who knows exactly how relevant it is? I imagine Simmons was probably looking for something heavenly to name the character. It's still wildly inconsistent regardless."Between the earth and the heaven, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out against Jerusalem."

I'm actually legitimately surprised to find people taking issue with Sabat's performance as Vegeta here.
Honest to god, I find his performance the only thing that SAVES that voice! It's unrealistic and, with worse acting (to me) would come off incredibly forced (as it has in the past), but over the last several years his performance as Vegeta has absolutely made up for that voice, in my eyes. He sounds much more natural in his delivery and he's stopped straining.
I dunno, I honestly feel like Sabat's performance is spectacular in this movie. Though, you're right, having him as the dragon (especially without the pitch mod) is very distracting at this point. But he's been it since the beginning and it would be pretty awkward to replace him here.e

"Shiva the Destroyer" was where my mind automatically jumped to the first time I heard the phrase "Beerus the Destroyer" (well, that and Sutekh from Doctor Who). It wouldn't surprise me if that's what Simmons had in mind; he's a pretty well-known god.
How did Simmons translate the title for DBZ episode 160 (where Cell is called hakaishin)? Or when Lood gets called hakaishin in GT? If "destroyer" is how he's translated the term in the past, then this shouldn't be a surprise.

According to the Dragon Book from Dragon Box Vol. 4 he went with "Battle Power Infinity!! Birth of the God of Destruction named Cell".Herms wrote:"Shiva the Destroyer" was where my mind automatically jumped to the first time I heard the phrase "Beerus the Destroyer" (well, that and Sutekh from Doctor Who). If the film were to be released in Portugal it'd be for the best that you guys would get it subbed only rather than get a shitty dub without any professional voice acting (*cough* Disney Channel).Doctor. wrote:I'd give everything to hear Feist as Goku one more timeQuebaz wrote:*Cries a little bit inside*FortuneSSJ wrote:In the end the movie never got released here in Portugal. Would have been amazing from Novaga everyone coming back to dub it, even getting new actors to replace António Semedo and all that would be cool. Let's hope atleast we get the next movie.
While I've got the Manga UK Collector's Edition Blu-ray on pre-order I'm also getting the Spanish Blu-ray for the Castellano dub.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
