The Portuguese dub wasn't that bad.

Okay, it was bad, but it had some redeeming qualities here and there.

I still think it's better than most crap that shows up in TV these days... Disney movies aside - those usually have nice dubs (well, the classic ones had, I'm not that informed with the most recent ones).

Only for the classic films because it does a horrible job at everything else, especially those shows even less funny than Big Bang Theory.

Wait, wasn't Battle of Gods supposed to be brought to Portugal (specifically subbed) by MEO/ZON? What happened to it?

The older movies (even the ones without the normal cast) have an excellent dub, specially 12 and 13. If they got the older actors to come back, had Vitor Rocha as Piccolo and Mr. Satan, João Loy as Vegeta and somehow managed to get Rogério Jacques to dub Yamcha, It would be amazing.

GT's dub is great as well, only problem with it is the BGM quality in some episodes and the Narrator getting drunk mid show.

Also all of the Disney movies have always had great dubs here as well, even the most recent ones.

That was just nonsense by that "Official" Portuguese Dragon Ball Facebook Page. While I do believe most voice actors are actually contributing to the page, the administration has really no clue on some of the things s/he posts. They actually tried to perpetuate that "Toriyama is going to make 200 new episodes" rumor back when Battle of Z was released.
Also, I'm putting "Official" with quotations because I doubt they bought the rights to the franchise here...

I put together a 20 minute comparison video between the original audio and the English dub. It features most of the key scenes alongside some suggestions from Twitter.

Hopefully it'll spur the conversation on some more over here. Enjoy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYcPyf9w7xg

Was too lazy to hard encode the entire film and THEN cut it up so I just manually subtitled it in Premiere Pro. Hopefully there's no render errors or any fuck-ups with my spelling.

As far as I know, Disney Movies have good dubs in almost every country.

That's because all the actors have to get through a process called ''Test Voice'' in which Disney decides who will voice who.
Also, during the days of recording there are people of Disney in every country inside the studio in order to supervise the actors and tell them how to do this or that.

Does anyone know if Japan does the same with his high-budget Anime Movies (Battle of Gods included)?

^Maybe the major countries, but from the little I've seen of dubs here in Sweden, it would seem that almost no effort is put into them at all. They give off a very unprofessional vibe with the dissonance between voices and all other sounds. Everyone's either really bored while reading their lines, or sound like they're about to start singing. English dubs, for the most part (See Animax, Hong Kong, and Big ) don't have these issues at all.

Wow! Just watched the dub. So impressed with it.

I've seen the film loads of times now but this felt like the first viewing again. FUNimation did a fantastic job. Possibly the best they've ever done with DBZ.

Sean delivered Gokus lines really well. It was also a lot funnier for me than the Japanese version.

Bullshit. Like any other country, most people here love our dub. I doubt anyone here would wanted it subbed. I can see the movie having even more jokes since our cast is just that crazy.

It was already awkward have their voices changed In Broly Second Coming and Bio-Broly movies (there were not bad though except for Goku. That one was horrible)
I love the original version, its the best when it comes to quality. No doubt. But our dub will always be my favourite version.

Just finished watching the movie and I really liked the uncut version, really makes it into a better movie. Really like Beerus's voice now even though I wasn't too fond of Jason Douglas prior. Love Vegeta's voice here, Sabat has truly gone a long way.

Other stuff, not really bothered with Shenron's voice or Trunks voice. They sound just fine to me. Trunks does sound younger though but it's not like it's bad.

The extra features are great fun to watch as well. Was cracking up seeing the pudding scene getting acted out. So great blu-ray overall.

Isn't that basically the same as FUNi's old dubs that have been severely criticized here, though? Filled with silly jokes including metafictional and local ones like mondo cool, never trying to follow the original scripts. I can understand your love for the dub because everyone has his own nostalgia, but Dragon Ball is already much enjoyable and well written as-is. It doesn't need any major changes for enjoyment. Unfaithful dubs are/must be things of the past.

I hope Portugal will get a decent dub someday, like how FUNi's dub has improved over many years.

Dragon Ball Kai in Portugal was subbed only too, so people have already gotten used to DB stuff in PT being subtitled than dubbed so it wouldn't really be much of a surprise to anyone (I couldn't really stand watching it subbed on PT it it weren't PreAo).

You can say that but here they didn't changed the characters personality. For example, Sean makes Goku all cliche with that speechs about being light in darkness. Our Goku doesn't try to be more badass or cooler than the original version.

Other problem that I have with the english dub is that moments where characters aren't supposed to say anything so you can just enjoy the BGM and the scene, they just added some random dialogue. Example: Vegeta talking about his training to became a super saiyan.

Only some people watched Kai. A lot people didn't like seeing subbed after so many years. For most anime watchers its not problem, because we are already used. But for those people that only watched Dragon Ball on tv, it was. There was even petitions to get dubbed but no sucesss. It wasn't a flop but could do it much better.

"Our" Goku was just a straight up translation from the French script and while they didn't have him say that cheesy line that FUNimation had instead it was "By the Power of Kaio-sama!" which isn't as bad but still cringeworthy.

It may smell less, but it's still a poop. A single line "By the power of Kaio, transformation!" is enough to make a judgment on the quality of the dub. Also, even when FUNi first started dubbing the show themselves, their cast was at least acceptable enough to take it serious at important moments, but I've heard nothing worth calling "acting" in the Portuguese dub. What I hear is just ridiculously forced and high pitched male voices and moans that can hardly be called yells. Every fight scene sounds like characters are having a gay sex instead.

Even you still love it, just let it be a thing of the past. It's not something we should welcome in this century. BoG should get a faithful dub.

Amazon must have shipped mine because it says ''Arriving in 3 days'' and it's location is Columbia SC :D Not only that but my Season 7 says it'll be here in 3 days as well! :D
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128
Still recording Toonami broadcasts on VHS after all these years!

Good to here that, but can you get it here in Canada, or do you have to buy it online. if it's available here I'll pick it up tomorrow if not I'll have to wait a week for it to ship.

So in the dub it's Beerus and in the subtitles it's Beers. I was hoping we'd get a consistent name. Maybe we can get a statement from Simmons one of these days as to why he choose Beers.

Also both ENG and JP versions use English versions of Hero and Cha-La-Head-Cha-La because that's just what Toei gave them.
