Is there a new DB series to boost Japan's economy?
Or is that just a hoax?

But a hoax.Angelus wrote:Or is that just a hoax?

Toei's too cheap to make a new DB series; I'm not even sure I count Kai as a new series imo that's more of a re-cut of already existing material.
On hiatus.

More like Shueisha and Toriyama Akira don't give a shit about creating a quality cartoon, so they don't help Toei Animation fund a well-done new series.Chuquita wrote:Toei's too cheap to make a new DB series; I'm not even sure I count Kai as a new series imo that's more of a re-cut of already existing material.

I can believe that. Toriyama never seemed that involved in the anime when it was running (from what I understand). Shueisha I don't know the goings on of well enough, but I can see how they'd probably just want something airing period because it provides awareness to the brand more than trying to make sure that something is good. I haven't watched Toei's OP recently enough to compare. I know HaCha's budget was spent on the movie instead of spreading it between that and the series for some reason, but HaCha's not from Shueisha, so I can't use that.JulieYBM wrote:More like Shueisha and Toriyama Akira don't give a shit about creating a quality cartoon, so they don't help Toei Animation fund a well-done new series.Chuquita wrote:Toei's too cheap to make a new DB series; I'm not even sure I count Kai as a new series imo that's more of a re-cut of already existing material.

I don't see another series happening anytime soon since we are getting new movies once every two years. If we get another one then I guess it won't be until 2016 for the 30th anniversary of the original TV series. I think GT not doing so well made Toei not want to do another Dragon Ball series after the 90's.

GT Did quite well compared to a lot of anime out there, I'm pretty sure.
Re: Is there a new DB series to boost Japan's economy?
The Dragon Box release sold 31,696 units. The single releases have sold a combined 21,227 units. The Dragon Box release alone made a good 14 million and the ratings and initial merchandise wave alone likely made the series it's money back in the 1990s.Retan wrote:GT Did quite well compared to a lot of anime out there, I'm pretty sure.

From what I can remember that GT's ratings were lower then expected compare to DBZ. If GT was not a flop then Toei would have kept it going. Toei will keep something going as long it makes money even it bombs like Super Sentai for example (Ohranger and Go-Busters comes to mind).

While I'm sure DB makes oodles of money for Toei, I somewhat doubt a new series would have a noticeable effect on Japan's economy as a whole.

Well, Toei is starting their second brand new Saint Seiya anime since 2012 next Spring, so I doubt it's an issue of cheapness (Toei's already a master of over-cheapening an anime):Chuquita wrote:Toei's too cheap to make a new DB series; I'm not even sure I count Kai as a new series imo that's more of a re-cut of already existing material.
I think Toei's focusing on movies for now. Battle of Gods sold well, and Toriyama's glad to work with them. We'll see if they get confident enough to try a TV show as well down the line.
I'd love to see an OVA adaptation of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman.

GT was that god awful how could it have not failed.

You can say the franchise somewhat did back then, though. As you may know, Toriyama had a hard time ending the serialization because many companies involved with the franchise were afraid of a decline in their performance and stock price by that. In fact, it is said that exclusives in such companies had a number of meetings to decide to let Toriyama end it. I doubt this directly affected something like the Nikkei Stock Average, but it's easy to imagine that it did damage some major companies in some way.Herms wrote:While I'm sure DB makes oodles of money for Toei, I somewhat doubt a new series would have a noticeable effect on Japan's economy as a whole.
Dr. Slump was also so big that it created an industry term among the stationery market: Arale-chan shock. In the early '80s, there was a huge boom of stationery products featuring Dr. Slump, and it is said that they even accounted for about half of total sales of some stationers. When the craze for the series itself was ending, such products still continued to sell very well because it was parents who were buying them. Parents didn't know that their children were starting to lose interest in Dr. Slump. Stationers were also unaware of what children were actually into and they ordered tons of Dr. Slump merchandise for the new year shopping season in 1983... As a result, they had to carry an extreme amount of dead stock.

I think One Piece is doing a good job right now at helping Japan's economy.
In terms of Dragon Ball i think the reason we're getting movies instead of a series is because movies take less of everything to make and make a lot more $$$ then a series.

July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

If by the original series you mean Dragon Ball it already hit the 30 year mark, but for Dragon Ball Z there's still five years to go until it reaches that much. They've had 25-30 years and the best they still came up with was the Dragon Boxes (DB/Z/GT/Movies).Hellspawn28 wrote:I don't see another series happening anytime soon since we are getting new movies once every two years. Re: Is there a new DB series to boost Japan's economy?
If a new series were to occur, it seems rather likely that Toriyama would be involved. His interest in the series seems to be renewed to some extent with these films, although I'm not sure he would really want to commit to something like that. I could see him designing the overall premise/characters and story arcs and leaving the rest to Toei/whomever.
I was Thanos before the MCU existed!

I was talking about the 1986 TV series. I think Toei could do something in 2016 for the 30th anniversary of the TV series. 1996 give us GT and Path of Power for the 10th anniversary of the original show. I doubt we will get one, but I will be up for a new show as long if it's good.dbboxkaifan wrote:If by the original series you mean Dragon Ball it already hit the 30 year mark.Hellspawn28 wrote:I don't see another series happening anytime soon since we are getting new movies once every two years. Re: Is there a new DB series to boost Japan's economy?
As of now there are no plans announced for a new series, but maybe they're testing the waters with Kai and Battle of Gods, and we'll see something new after they end.
Re: Is there a new DB series to boost Japan's economy?
Toei Animation has done Gegege no Kitarou five times. There's no 'testing the waters' going on here, simply a refusal to treat their one international mega-hit and its fandom with the respect it deserves by continually producing horrible trash like Dragon Ball Kai.

For the first thing you said that just sounds like baseless rumors we've heard so many timeskei17 wrote:You can say the franchise somewhat did back then, though.
