If the new material always worked the way you seem to personally envision it should, none of the new material would be entertaining in the least because it would instead focus on the characters telling the weaker characters off for even bothering to show up.
Hell, there seems to be a crapload of Freeza soldiers up there, there could turn out to be so many of them that collectively they're a threat, at least enough so of one that our "lesser" heroes have to handle it all while Goku and Vegeta tangle with Freeza.
And they'd be justified in doing so, as when the power gap is too big, all the weaker characters can do is consume senzu beans that could be better used on the actually relevant fighters (see the Cell Games). I'm not too focused on the power side of things; if anything I severely underplay just how enormous the power gaps between these characters are. Like it or not, power is what the whole series is based on, and it's how every plot advances. Except perhaps the plot of the first arc.
A collective threat? Just like how thousands of Saiyans were a collective threat to 1st form Freeza's finger? Or how about a dozen of Cold's grunts were a collective threat to base Trunks? Or how 17, 18, Krillin, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, Yajirobe, Cyborg Tao, Roshi, Ox-King, Bora, and all the other people on Earth were a collective threat to Super Buu? Or how over half a dozen Cell Juniors + Cell himself were a collective threat to Gohan? Or how a whole gang of powerful people were a collective threat to Nappa? Or how another gang of powerful people were a collective threat to an exhausted and half-dead Piccolo? Or how about a hundred RRA troops were a collective threat to kid Goku?
Teamwork doesn't mean jack in this series unless you're already decently close to your enemy to begin with. If these guys are weak enough that Krillin can kill them, all any of the relevant heroes would have to do is wave their hand in the general direction of the horde. Do you remember how, at the end of the Bardock special, Bardock just straight-up ran through hundreds of Freeza's thugs without noticing them? Logically, even Yamcha should be able to do that by this point.
I don't see why you feel the need to argue about this.
