AjayLikesGaming wrote:Yeah, the art isn't great (especially compared to his 'golden age' work for the show). I'm still excited though. Battle of Gods wasn't great looking bar one scene and that was still thoroughly entertaining.

I'd be interested to hear the opinions of the explicitly anti-Yamamuro fans in this thread (in particular, JulieYBM and Kei17) regarding this shot:

Image

I'm totally with you guys on the whole but I'm struggling to find something I actively dislike about this besides his nose and slightly wide face.

This isn't a challenge at all, I'm just genuinely curious as to whether there's anything I'm not picking up on.
I don't see anything wrong with this. I'm of the mind that maybe Yamamuro's art just does not translate to digital well. I think ALL the art looked better when it was cel animation, it looked more real. The animation in all digital dbz just looks off to me and always has. The air-brushed ki effects and such looked better I think in the old anime then their digital counterparts too.

I think this holds some weight, because the movie poster looks a lot better then the animation. I know that was probably colored digitally and what not, but it's a different method then the way they'd animate the film.

Also, budget probably dictates animation quality too.

REGARDING THE ACTUAL TRAILER!! ...

I don't have much of an opinion. It looks cool, but I don't see anything all that interesting from a story pov. More of the same.

I'll bet there will be a party in this film at some point, where Beerus will get his pudding.

Digital isn't the problem. Yamamuro's art style has changed, his character models are different and his promotional art no longer has that same apparent love in it. Plenty of digitally colored animated series look better than Dragon Ball did when it was done on cels and film.

"Yo dawg, we put out a trailer for this upcoming trailer." Thanks, Japan!

Random thoughts as I plow through the past ten pages to catch up...

1.) OMG why do some of you people never read the front page I'm so sick of reading the same questions every three posts make it stopppppp.

2.) Really, really, REALLY convinced on this "alternate reality created by the wish" thing. That would explain the scenes in which Freeza and his soldiers are arriving on Earth. I mean, if Tagoma and Sorbet were on Earth when they revived Freeza, why would he still need to travel to Earth? Plus, the only characters we've seen so far are from the Freeza arc and earlier (Bald Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Muten Roshi). Perhaps we haven't seen Goten, Trunks, or #18 yet because they simply don't exist once the wish is made? It would just explain so much. And for the sake of not having to hear any debates about Gohan's hair color, I sure hope we're in an alternate reality.

3.) Kuririn and Muten Roshi fighting! AND THE OSCAR GOES TO...!

4.) While I do agree that Yamamuro doesn't deliver the quality that he used to, I can't help but think that it would look at least a little better if this movie weren't so rushed. I mean, *I* thought the characters on the poster looked great. If we could get everyone looking that consistently good, I'd be fine with Yamamuro. I don't mind the usual complaints about his designs (because I do agree that the drawings here don't look too great), but I'm going to stay cautiously optimistic about him being the director. We've seen first-time directors wow us before, so I'm not going to give the guy any heat until we see what he can do. He does seem to be a little too stubborn about wanting the film to reflect his visual "style," but there's always a chance the rest of the movie could be stellar.

5.) Nakao's laugh. GOOSEBUMPS. I even giggled once I heard it. Help me. Or not.

I wonder if Grandpa Gohan could return in the movie. Before Freeza is brought back, the movie can have another party with Goku and the other, Baba has Grandpa Gohan return to visit for a day. It been a long time since Grandpa Gohan met Goku and the others.

First time directors who pull off a miracle tend to also be young and at the beginning or height of their careers. Plenty of talented animators make the transition to director smoothly (Yoshinari You, Sessha Gorou, Yamashita Hiroyuki, Yokoyama Akitoshi, Wakabayashi Atsushi, Ryoo-chimo, Yamashita Shingo et cetera). Yamamuro is in his fifties and hasn't done steady animation work since the mid-1990s. The trailer shows no sense of aesthetic. The fact that he's the director is more indicative of him being the only one willing to take the job more than anything else.

Yeah, it isn't the problem. The 18th Detective Conan film: Detective Conan: Dimensional Sniper has an excellent animation. The timing, action, models, and everything else were superb. That was all done digitally.

The problem is how the staff were placed and executed properly. A good example is the Seigasha studio where they used each animator' strength and weakness to utilize their talent on cuts. They would always rotate so that they could do their best to make the episodes look excellent as possible. Naoki Tate was one of the key animators for that animation studio. If Yamamuro could recognize his strength and weakness and figure out how to fully utilize key animators' talents, that'd be a good start for him.

Maybe he is jaded and no longer feels for the series in his drawings like he used to. Maybe he's been doing this too long, but out of pride and prestige he keeps doing it because it's his thing.

That sounds right. There's the effort that comes from loving what you draw that imo is missing here.

That chart I posted earlier, if I read it correctly, that top, 1st row is also Yamamuro's work from the Buu arc. It's night and day with his BOG row at the bottom.

If only we had a time machine to travel back in and bring early 90's Yamamuro to work on F's artwork instead. XD

Time, money, and available resources. Why would someone with talent want to work on a film that has to be made quickly, with little money (probably no more than $1,000,000 USD) and probably few if any talented key animators (unless they themselves know some talented freelancers). That also assumes they have any interest working on Dragon Ball.

Interesting trailer, worried about Vegeta's role now though... (And Super Saiyan Gohan after the response they had last time? What the heck??)
And yes, I am also deeply disappointed by the quality of the film's animation so far. Hopefully we see some better shots later on, but to be honest, there shouldn't be so many poor ones in the first place.
To those who say "Who cares about the animation if the story is good?" The quality of the animation will give the story life; It's how the story is presented. If only story matters, then we should just get rid of all non-literature. I'm pretty sure that even if you don't necessarily notice it yourself, poor animation or even live-action directing probably affects the way you perceived the story of something. This stuff isn't disconnected, it's all the sum of it's parts. But whatever, I'm sure Toei doesn't care anymore anyway...

Oh also, some people here have called Toriyama up on some of the rushed work he did for the manga (Looking at you, Buu arc...)

What are the chances of this godawful Freeza Army sequence making it into the final film in its current form? It was easily the worst part of the trailer for me.

The CG will probably be spruced up a bit but I doubt it will not be horrible, still.

I'm going to bet that either Vegeta or Goku will kill all of Freeza's Army in one blow. I do notice Appule is shown which makes me wonder if The Ginyu Force, Zarbon and Dodoria are back as well?

I think Gokû might have those sock-boots; I can't fully tell here, but I hope it's those. X3
Also, that gi shirt-skirt is short. XD

Also this lighting in this frame, makes it look like a big glowing gumball in Freeza's mouth. XD

I'd forgotten how much fun messing with BOG via Premiere Elements was; can't wait to look through the full F trailer. Cheers me up this stuff does. :3

Pretty sure thats just a member of Appule's race. Watch Namek again and youll notice a few times that a lot of the soldiers are pretty identical aside from pallete swaps and a few minor details.

Could the design just be reused? Possibly just another member of Appule race?

Just wait 'til you see it in gloriously gimmicky 3D.

"That'll be an extra $4, please." :P

I have to wonder if they'll be doing 3D screenings internationally as well.

EDIT: Also, random, super crazy, out-there fan theory; Beerus passes away in this film which is why Whis is training Goku. Remember how he offers Goku the role of 'God of Destruction' at the end of the last film? Granted, it was a throwaway line, but I couldn't help but have this cross my mind. Probably unlikely, but fun to think about.
