The moral is that toriyama cares about the story and character interaction more then drawing the characters.

I think Toriyama has gotten a bit lazy with his drawing, and he's just giving them a rough idea of how he wants the character to look, and doesn't intend his designs to be interpreted literally for the movie.... I also think they interpreted his God design way to literally, and that's why he was so skinny in the movie. If you read his early description of God, he only describes his hair and eye color changing to red, and no other changes, so I don't think he intended God to be so skinny.

I suppose "so skinny" is open to interpretation, but Toriyama definitely intended for Super Saiyan God to be skinny:
Were you consulted at all about the characters’ designs?
Once, along the way, I had the confirmation, “When he transforms, would it be all right to make him a little slimmer?” This is true of the original manga as well, but with each successive transformation, the characters get pretty buff. So this time, I felt that I wanted to make the transformation slim. So that’s why Super Saiyan God, which first appears this time, has a slim design.
In fact,Toriyama repeatedly shot down anime character designer Tadayoshi Yamamuro's attempts to give Super Saiyan God a buff design, as Yamamuro explains here:
I handled the roughs for Super Saiyan God. It was “a being that surpasses everything” so I drew a character more built than Super Saiyan, with a cape, but then illustrations with a completely different feel came back from Toriyama-sensei…. It was too different from my own internal image, so I tried suggesting the more sturdily-drawn character one more time, and then Sensei told me that it really was all wrong. (laughs) It had always gone through with a single check [before], but this time, we had that sort of exchange many times. Please check how Super Saiyan God is drawn at the movie theater.

I don't remember which interview it was, but there was one where he said the only thing that was supposed to change was his hair and eyes... maybe he did originally intend him to be skinny though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I personally prefer the first design that was posted on the door at TOEI studio and wish they would have stuck with that one.

Is there an actual picture of their initial design? Could you post it for me? I've never seen it before

Here's the one from the door. It's not the initial buff design that got scrapped though.

There isn't a picture of the buff design, but Kaboom did a pretty sweet rendition of what it was originally described and intended to look like before Toriyama stepped in.

I remember first seeing that design on the door and thinking his hair was brown with blonde highlights. XD

From what I recall reading, Yamamuro and Toriyama went back and forth with each of them trying to get their version to be the final one; Toriyama won of course. :3

It's probably not entirely fair to refer to that door image as an "initial design", since we really have no concrete information on it whatsoever. It's just...an image that was hanging on the door over at Toei, and which happened to get caught on camera apparently by accident. We know Toriyama and Yamamuro went back and forth working out the final Super Saiyan God design, and that there were various rough drafts, but we can't say for sure that the door image is actually one of them. It doesn't entirely match up with how Super Saiyan God looks in the movie, but that could just be because it's an image that happened to end up looking a little off-model, rather than because it's an earlier design that was considered but rejected. I mean, to my mind the door image is so similar to what we actually got in the movie that the few differences are most likely due to the natural variation you get from one image to another (and the apparent difference in hair color is probably just due to poor image quality).

I only refer to it as the first or initial design because it's the first one that was presented to us.

It's the first image that leaked out, but it wasn't even formally presented, as I recall. It just turned up in the background of a feature on the making of BoG, and at the time there was debate over whether or not it really was the Super Saiyan God design (as opposed to just a weird-looking image of Goku powering up, or using Kaio-Ken, or something). I remember at the time being pretty skeptical, because I thought there was no way Toei would be careless enough to let the design of the big new transformation leak out so unceremoniously, but I turned out to be wrong once BoG came out. I don't think any formal information on the image was ever released.

Nothing too notable, but RoF is mentioned at the end of a DBH promo trailer.
Hope this hasn't been mentioned yet, I'm a day or two behind on this thread.

Yeah, it was a very informal presentation for something as big as a new transformation, but it wasn't really leaked, was it? I thought it was from a video sanctioned by TOEI and they were aware it was in there.
