In your opinion, which do you feel is the better anime game of 2014? In terms of story, combat, content, etc.

Never played J Stars Victory VS but I did play Battle of Z (demo) and it was bad... really bad. The ugly visuals, the wonky animations, the unbearably shallow combat, no local multiplayer, and recycled soundtrack. I could list many, many things I'd rather do than play that game. Even the story mode sucks.

One of the worst anime fighters I've ever played. Even Ultimate Tenkaichi more of a fighter than it.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

J Stars Victory Vs is the superior game hands down. Granted Victory Vs gets repetitive but at least it has replay value. Battle Of Z doesn't offer that. Hell, Battle Of Z as whole doesn't offer much. It's a pretty bad Dragon Ball game and as a game itself, it has zero replay value.

Battle of Z is completely misunderstood by nearly the entirety of Dragon Ball fandom. The blame can almost squarely be placed on Bandai Namco and their advertising, which did absolutely nothing to explain what the game actually is (and did more harm than good with how they did explain it). Once you come to the understanding that it's not a pure fighting game (particularly not one of the Sparking/Tenkaichi style despite its appearance), a whole new world opens up. It's the first and only game for the franchise thus far that requires specific roles to play, team work, coordination with party members, etc.

(OK, beyond Dragon Ball Online, I guess...!)

So I think it's kind of unfair to compare Battle of Z with J-Stars, especially since one's an actual Dragon Ball game and the other just has three characters (well, four counting Arale) made by a former DBZ game developer.

They both serve completely different purposes, minus both being under that whole banner of "fun as a video game with Goku shooting lasers".

If I had to choose... I dunno. Maybe J-Stars...? It's got Kenshin.

I'm going to say Battle of Z no contest. Once I understood what the game actually was (hint: not 4 player budokai-tenkaichi) I had a lot of fun farming for points and unlocking customizable cards. I was grateful to have a game where different characters for once played entirely different from each other and served unique(albeit to varying degrees of useful-ness) roles in battle.

J-stars on the other hand, once understood, is just a poor game. Once you've gotten over how stunning it comes across visually, you'll dismay at the lousy mechanics underneath. Unlike BoZ, it absolutely is trying to be a competitive technique based fighting game and as such must be compared to other successful titles like the Gundam vs Gundam series or even the BT games. It's greatest sin is that the basic battle mechanics are clunky and unrewarding. Instead of having a yummy rock-paper-scissors sense of offensive and defensive balance too many fights simply boil down to: whaling on your opponent -> knocking him down -> waiting for him to get up -> and then whaling on him some more. You're never encouraged to do much more than that. Even more frustrating is that movement is so sluggish and the camera so un-intuitive (the environment is constantly in your way) that you will almost consistently be getting whacked in the back by a player you're not targeted on with no means of defense. I beat the campaign, played a few online matches and shelved it for good. Very disappointing for me.

J Stars. It's tough to decide, because both are fun for me but for different reasons, but I'd pick J Stars any time. Spirit Detective Yusuke Urameshi, F-T-W!
