It's honestly a genuinely interesting take on the material. I would've watched direct to cable sequels for years. Imagine it going on so long everyone's recasted like ten movies from now with way cheaper actors and they're just fighting cheap ass fuck Shadow Dragons.FatNagger69 wrote:I agree. I clicked it and got:
It was probably fake (or at least, I'd want it to be fake. I'm happy with the whole Toriyama-writing-DB-animated-movies set-up that's going on now; I no longer have an appetite for any Hollywood adaptations of Dragon Ball); anyone with an account can edit IMDB.
Interestingly they must have barely printed any copies of this movie after how blandly bad it turned out; I've actually never seen copies of it out in the wild, even when it was first released. I've seen copies of that live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie in discount bins; never seen any copies of DBE.

You're in good company. I was heartbroken when I heard the sequel was cancelled. :(ImmaDeker wrote:It's honestly a genuinely interesting take on the material. I would've watched direct to cable sequels for years.

Re: DBZ Movie?
The part that bummed me out a lot was people's sequel hopes were all about trying to adapt the rest of the series as faithfully as humanly possible, as if fans didn't really consider that Evolution as a starting point would render future stories as they wanted them pretty impossible (then again, DBZ fans, so).FatNagger69 wrote:You're in good company. I really liked all the weirdness of Evolution. Oozaru as Piccolo's right hand man, Roshi as a youthful looking teacher of Gohan who was the reckless rebel skeptic among immortals, etc. Evolution was like a Dragonball Elseworld in the genuine meaning of that concept, and I always preferred those comics to the main continuity stuff. The fact the movie's so shunned is a shame because who gives a shit if it wasn't good? It was fucking cool.

Re: DBZ Movie?
I have to agree since Evoltuion was a terrible movie but it's hardly the worst movie ever made in my opinion. If you watch Evolution as a cheesy B movie similar to Street Fighter (1994) and The Phantom (1996) then the movie can be campy fun. With Evolution you knew it was going to be bad since the trailers and TV ads for the movie looked horrible. Not to mention the movie was doom when the casting news came out since they leak out on the back story of the characters for the movie. Also they got James Wong, the director of Jet Li's The One, Final Destination 1 & 3 and the 2006 remake of Black Christmas. James Wong directing the movie showed the film that this movie had no hope for being good.ImmaDeker wrote:Evolution is a perfectly serviceable bad movie you'd stumble on at like 4 AM on TNT or something. It's hard for me to hate on a movie that I had zero hopes for. Even the special effects crew that work on the movie thought that the movie was crap.

Re: DBZ Movie?
This may be an odd question but am I the only one who just doesn't care to see a live action Dragon Ball film? Nothing in this technological era, especially in ki-blast heavy monster looking villain sagas, gives me hope that it could be done convincingly if the goal is to be faithful. I too would be okay with more original takes on the series but not the former.
K&K production's attempt was hilariously bad except for Yamcha which just made it more funny as many of their promos focused on him since they knew he was their strongest aspect....Yamcha. A miniseries of that clear inexperience with a big budget doesn't make me excited. Excuse my lack of knowledge on Street Fighter but to me Assassin's Fist worked because it focused on Ken, Ryu and Gouken largely secluded in the woods not the whole crazy SF cast battling it out to reach M.Bison or Akuma all around the world from the start.

I'm pretty indifferent. I'd like to see it happen just to see what it would be like,Ashelia wrote:This may be an odd question but am I the only one who just doesn't care to see a live action Dragon Ball film?
but I don't expect a live-action adaptation to be any good.
If we never get another, I'd be fine with that.

Re: DBZ Movie?
After seeing how Man of Steel ended up, they can make a Dragon Ball Z movie really damn good. But unfortunately there will be insufficient funding and lacking special effects to make that happen. Plus this movie wouldn't be in the hands of a proper director, to make things worse. Hell, just hire me, I can do it!

Yeah Imdb is not that reliable. I still remember seeing Ray Park and Bill Goldberg on there as Vegeta and NappaChuquita wrote:Re: OT

That's interesting that there ain't any copies of DBE in your area. I always see it in CA like at target or best buy.

Re: DBZ Movie?
Man of Steel is a good example, but honestly, I don't think the visual effect side of things is necessarily the problem anymore. As we've seen from recent fan-made works, fairly serviceable live action Dragonball Z-style visuals are possible with next to no budget these days.Eternal Super Saiyan wrote:After seeing how Man of Steel ended up, they can make a Dragon Ball Z movie really damn good. For me, the biggest issue is translating the narrative content - which is something that every single adaptation of Dragonball to a live action medium, be it official or fan-made, has utterly failed to do. For example, Evolution tried to depict the 'Dragon World' but fill it with anchor points that more closely resembled a real world setting, such as Goku being a high school student, but essentially failed to paint a setting that was congruent or made any sense to either casual film goers or versed Dragonball fans who were fully familiar with the original world setting.
Furthermore, as a lead protagonist, it's a reasonable argument to make that Goku's personality isn't all that interesting, and his involvement in most of the original Manga plots is usually always as a reacting party to bad situation or dire worldly event. Somewhat like Superman, he's offers a rather one-dimensional perspective to write from, as his only real interests in life appear to be food and training, as even his interactions with the large supporting cast are more or less nonexistent in times of peace. Which presents another problem in itself, that the supporting cast are largely arbitrary remnants of previous plots who serve very little narrative function beyond them and are therefore difficult to justify in the medium of a film, which is only likely to focus on one particular plot arc at a time.

Re: DBZ Movie?
Man of Steel had a budget over 200 million. Making a DBZ movie that big would be too much of a risk to take since Hollywood would look at Dragon Ball and stay away from it knowing that Evolution flopped. Superman is a bigger brand name, so Superman can get away with a huge budget movie. Not to mention Superman had 5 movies in Hollywood while Dragon Ball only had one.
