Had DBZ not aired first, I feel DB would have been moderately successful on Toonami, but would have most probably been canceled early on (as it was the first time around). The network pretty much anticipated that in the first place, which is why DBZ aired on Toonami at a time almost no one knew what DB was here.

I'm not sure about its success in non-English speaking places. I know when I went to PR in the early 2000s, my cousins were crazy about DBZ (I think we were just heading into the Buu arc, but they were airing the Cell arc for the first time there)... cause of the action. I also had a friend who watched DBZ in Peru, and another who watched it in Argentina. Never really heard much about DB. >.>

That could have been an interesting ending. Everybody gets their last goodbyes with Goku, the Goku/Vegeta rivalry finally reaches its resolution, the story ends with Goku being the strongest and the torch has been successfully passed to Gohan.
I think it would've been amazing.

Piccolo vs 18, Piccolo/18 vs any base Saiyan, Goku vs Vegeta, Goku vs Gohan (finale), Supreme Kai/Kibito vs anyone, etc, so many possibilities (assuming the Saiyans keep their promise and don't turn into Super Saiyans). It would've been a satisfying ending to me :P

I didn't really care for the actual Buu stuff that came after it so yeah..

It was.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I meant if DBZ never aired before it.

DB did originally air before DBZ, but not on Toonami. 13 episodes were dubbed using the Ocean cast in 1995 and they flopped in the ratings (partially due to bad timeslots on obscure channels), so FUNi skipped right ahead to DBZ.

I know. I meant specifically on Toonami since that's when most people in the US got into the franchise.

I kinda like that idea. I'd put in a mini-arc like Bojack, Movie 10 or Garlic Jr, though, showing Gohan, Vegeta and Piccolo are in fact able to take care of things without Goku.

Vegeta and Bulma fuck on Namek (scarcely less plausible than what actually happened), so when Goku dies fighting Freeza and Gohan and Bulma are the sole survivors, Trunks is born and joins them.

The spin-off anime has the Android twins start wrecking shit up, and Gohan, teen Trunks, and little Pan struggle against them (Gohan meets Videl when Satan very publicly gets murdered by 17 and 18). As audience interest wanes (either through Toei's incompetence or Goku-pining), all this is dumped as unceremoniously as Spider-Man's continuity. Bulma's obliged to build the time machine, since there are no dragon balls, and she sends Trunks through time and space to Namek, where he saves Goku and brings him to earth. From there the story continues as we know it, until we get to Vegetto, who never defuses.

Best of both worlds. The Freeza ending becomes the "canon" ending, while the Vegetto ending becomes the "actual" ending.
