So Piccolo takes on Spider-Man... who will win

Post by Jord » Thu Oct 19, 2006 11:16 am

So I went into a comic store and saw a Spier-Man comic. Now that's pretty common in comic stores, but this issue featured Spider-Man taking on a VERY Namek-like opponent:

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5899 ... oloam3.jpg

Hmmm...I wonder if this takes place between the 22nd Budokai and the arrival of Raditz.
Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

...

...No...must... resist...

...not resisting well...

GAAAH!!! INNER SPIDER-MAN GEEK OVERLOAD!!!!

***The cloudof dust clears, revealing Kaboom, transformed into his SSf ("Super Spider-Fan") state. The only visible changes are that he's wearing a "black symbiote suit" T-Shirt, his Spidey boxers, and of course, his hair is spikey.

Okay...

Actually, it's not a reference to good 'ol "Pickle, yo." DragonBall fans are probably the only people in this or any universe who would see a real resemblance.

The comic cover y'all are seeing here is from Ultimate Spider-Man, a recent re-adaptation of Spidey. The villian there is this story's version of the Green Goblin. Rather than just being a super strong insane guy in green tights, in this story Norman Osborn actually transforms, through a serum he developed, into this creepy, green, monsterish guy shown on the cover here.

And for the record, while Spidey ends up getting majorly pissed off and L337-TASTICALLY AND COMPLETELY SCHOOLING Gobbie, he probably could only beat 22nd Budokai Piccolo or Piccolo Daimou. Spidey's strong, but he can't destroy planets. Except for that one time when he got picked to have a short stint as Captain Universe, but that's not what we're talking about.

Ultimate Spider-Man is a good story, though. Frickin' funny, too. Anyone who isn't familiar with it, I'd suggest finding and flipping through the collections next time you're in the bookstore. Okay, my work here is done...

*** Kaboom descends from SSf. In other words, his hair returns to normal.***

Heh, when I saw the title of this thread. I thought it was in the same vein as "Could Goku Beat Superman?".

Anyway, that's the cover of one of the Ultimate Spider-Man graphic novels, and the Namek-looking character is the redesigned, new and improved Green Goblin. Instead of it being a suit, Noramn Osborn undergoes a genetic mutation of some sorts that drives him insane and transforms him into what you see there. It's Spider-Man, completely re-done for the 21st century. And it's awesome. 8)

I never really thought about it much. Now that I look at it, yeah there'sa resemblance, but it doesn't seem like a "we're trying our hardest to do an homage to Dragon Ball" thing to me, if you know what I mean.

I love Mark Bagley's artwork! :D

EDIT: Dammit! SSj Kaboom beat me to it by a few seconds! :x

I have the Hardcover Ultimate Spider-Man series. I didn't think of him looking like Piccolo, if you look at other drawings of him, he looks more like Hulk with horns (he even has purple shorts!).

Yes, I am a Spidey-Fan, and I went to the premiere of Spider-Man 2 at the Universal Studios IMAX theatre. Beat that. 8)

What ancient transformation are you talking about? Captain Universe? Spidey 2099? :?

Wow! I've followed Marvel for sometime but I would never put that image as Norman (its probably his son but w/e). His costume was always so standard but if you look at the early designs of the Green Goblin, it will remind you of Daimou and early Ma Junior. Tori bot and Kaboom stop stealing my interests!!

Oh 'Ultimate Spiderman', is there any character you can't fuck up? sigh

Yeah, if EX is reading this listen up: this is the perfect example about why not to get into American comics. "Hey guys, Spiderman's more popular than ever now. The movies are doing well and the comics are selling higher than ever. Let's make a new line that completely changes every character -not just personality wise, but completely change anything we can about them." Nick Fury is black now? That's a completely useful and necessary change.

I know this topic will be locked by the end of the day since it has no purpose on a DBZ board, so I'll say this real quick.

I've been a Spidy fan for along time now, and I enjoy the Ultimate series. I didn't mind the changes, yeah some of them were dumb, but overall I like this new take on a story that has been going on for 30+ years. Yeah, you won't learn anything about the original characters by reading this but it was a good adaption.

First of all, Nick Fury is based off of Samuel L. Jackson now.End of story 8). Second, the comment about:
and the comics are selling higher than ever
is not always true. I remember an article written around the time when Hulk came out saying that when those movies came out, the profits of the movie really decide the fate of its comicbook counterparts. Besides now that Nick Fury is black, people have a reason to identify him. Example: I like Green lantern. Which one? The black one. No one knows his name..! (John Stewart)

That's hard to anyone to beat, mio amico. But I am planning on seeing Spider-Man 3 opening day all decked up in black, including the aforementioned T-Shirt and boxers.

No, the one I made in my earlier post. Spidey 2k99 is "the awesome," though.

Oh, c'mon, don't be such a party pooper. Ultimate Spider-Man is seperate from the regular continuity. It's not like they cancelled the rest of the Spidey titles and tried to replace 'em with USM. Although I think the artwork quality is like a roller coaster (up and down constantly, but always interesting), Ultimate Spider-Man is a very good and original take on the webhead.

I admire you for doing that, but just make sure you don't get lifted by cinema security. :P And yes, no one can beat that.

Ah, of course! Spidey 2k99! What a legend! :P

I agree with what you said to Desiré. :)

I did wonder how that Spider-Man imposter got such strength though. :?

I'd always wanted Harry Osborn to become the Hobgoblin, and thanks to USM, my dream came true!

Uh-oh. Just noticed that this is a Dragon Ball forum. :P

Hm, let's see. Peter is still a nerd? Check. Spider bite? Check. Superpowers? Check. Aunt May at home? Check.

I...can't see a huge difference. Yeah, they changed the continuity, but that's kinda the point. It's an alternate telling. And to be honest, in quite a few ways it meets and/or exceeds the original. It's a very nice complementary piece, to say the least.
Nick Fury is black now? That's a completely useful and necessary change.
Samuel L Jackson liked the character and gave his consent to use his likeness. And he wants to play the character in the movie. Is there a huge problem here?

And yeah, like the regular continuity didn't kill characters. Let's take Venom, the kickass villain whose purpose was to hate Spiderman/Peter for ruining his life!

No, wait. Now he's an 'anti-hero'. A 'lethal protector' if you will.

No, wait. He's evil again. And now he has to eat a lot of chocolate. Or brains.

No, wait. The symbiote chose him because he had cancer, not because they both hated Peter.

No, wait, now he's the GODDAMN SCORPION.

And just think, that's one character. I didn't even touch the Clone Saga :P

The 'Ultimate' line is fine by me, it's much better than the constant shifts they try and make to the regular continuity. It's a new template, which gives creators free reign to tell stories as they'd like without mucking up the established history. Great thing is, if you don't like it, it doesn't impact the regular series at all.

23rd Budokai, guys, not 22nd. Daimao wasn't even released until after the 22nd Budokai finale between Goku and Tien. Not trying to sound like an ass, just fixing an easily misunderstood error.

For the record, I've always imagined a live-action Piccolo in the guise of Michael Dorn (Lt. Worf from Star Trek) or the WWE wrestler, Undertaker. I don't know about Samuel Jackson, he makes a kick-ass Jedi, but not sure he'd pull off a stellar Piccolo. Regarding that new Green Goblin, nice homage to our favorite Namekian raised on Earth, pretty cool.
Can't wait for Spiderman 3, though really all seeing Spidy under the influence of the Venom-goo does is seem like a rehash of Smallville's Clark Kent on Red K, IMO.

It's just that I'm of the school of thought that believes that changes from the original story should only be made if they're beneficial or necessary. Or at least make them interesting (like the symbiote coming from Mars). Making Fury black is kind of pointless and just confused the hell out of me when he showed up ("since when is Shaft in SHEILD? What? 'Fury'? Goddamnit"). And the Green Goblin is now a mutant (or something) and shoots fireballs. He's nothing like the original Goblin.

The story's not that different, it's just not as good as it could be. My favorite part of Spiderman is that he struggles to find acceptance as both Parker and Spiderman - or as either. Peter has a few friends, Spiderman has a few too, there's (maybe) two that are friendly to both. It's a big part of what makes Parker "tick" (get it, 'tick'? It's an arachnid like a spider? Haha -aw forget it). He struggles to find friends and love as Parker, and struggles to gain acceptance from the people he protects as Spiderman. Eventually he meets Mary Jane and slowly builds a relationship. Eventually he begins to become accepted by the people of New York. But not before years of torment and thanklessly saving the city.

My biggest "beef" with the new incarnations of Spiderman (the movies and 'USM') is that they skip the "years of torment and thankless work" that's so important to his character development. Mary Jane lives next door and falls for Parker immediately? (Does she know he's Spiderman in 'USM'?) Sigh. She takes Gwen Stacey's big scene? Damnit! Parker comes off (in the movies, at least) as a whiny bitch instead of a troubled and mentally beaten-down young man.

But that's another rant entirely.

*Now trying to bring this back to Dragonball somehow*

Uh... so if this 'reinventing' of characters is so accepted in American comics, why is even the changing of a character's name (Hercule) such a sticking point?

I think you're all being elitists. I like the newe Spider-man.

And I think that MJ knows Peter is Spidey in this one.

No one is being elitist. Most of us say that we like USM and those that don't arn't saying that if you like it, you're not a Spider-Man fan. And yes, MJ knows that Peter is Spidey, he tells her almost right away.
