And I'm not saying you're not a Spiderman fan for liking USM or the new movies, I'm just saying it's an inferior product and not true at all to the original. Kind of like the DBZ dub.

I wouldn't care if you said you didn't like USM, but calling it an inferior product is a little harsh.

To stay on topic...I really don't think Ultimate GG was based on Piccolo. I didn't even see a resemblance until I read this thread. Spider-Man wouldn't stand a chance against ANY incarnation of Piccolo by the way.

Hm, let's see. Peter is still a nerd? Check. Spider bite? Check. Superpowers? Check. Aunt May at home? Check.

I...can't see a huge difference. Yeah, they changed the continuity, but that's kinda the point. It's an alternate telling. And to be honest, in quite a few ways it meets and/or exceeds the original. It's a very nice complementary piece, to say the least.

And yeah, like the regular continuity didn't kill characters. Let's take Venom, the kickass villain whose purpose was to hate Spiderman/Peter for ruining his life!

No, wait. Now he's an 'anti-hero'. A 'lethal protector' if you will.

No, wait. He's evil again. And now he has to eat a lot of chocolate. Or brains.

No, wait. The symbiote chose him because he had cancer, not because they both hated Peter.

No, wait, now he's the GODDAMN SCORPION.

And just think, that's one character. I didn't even touch the Clone Saga

The 'Ultimate' line is fine by me, it's much better than the constant shifts they try and make to the regular continuity. It's a new template, which gives creators free reign to tell stories as they'd like without mucking up the established history. Great thing is, if you don't like it, it doesn't impact the regular series at all.

I don't think that his name changing was so bad, because of standards and what not. I think it is stupid but since all the dvds I own call him Satan, it is all good. I don't like changes in character though. The venom example and bringing Jean Grey back to life multiple times is stupid but stuff like taking Peter Parker from the orginal series and chaging him in another series doesn't bother me that much.

So if the character changes or is re-invented in the same series, I don't like it, but outside of the main series it is generally ok by me.

I have every issue of USM and I am loving it. Anyone enjoying the 'Clone Saga' at the momment? Anyway, bringing this back to Dragonball I never saw any correlation between Green Goblin and Piccolo.

If they took an old issue of Spiderman (say, Amazing Spiderman #121, where Gwen Stacy died) and simply plugged in dialogue on top of it ("I can see her parachute! She's okay!"), then it'd be an apples to apples comparison.

The 'Ultimate' line is new art, new dialogue, and new stories. It draws characters and situations from the original, but it doesn't try and sell itself as the original. It's a new take. Unlike the 'Hey, btw, Gwen fucked Norman Osborn and has two grown children!'-retcon they did in the normal continuity.

FUNi, on the other hand, takes DragonBall (Z, in this case) and injects whatever dialogue they want and changes the music to save on royalties for the most part. If they reanimated the series, and called it 'Ultimate DragonBall', I wouldn't care. They don't. They say shit like "ZOMFG J00 DUNNO GT, DAWGZ0R!" in their ads and make whatever changes they want.

Basically, it boils down to this: Marvel, in the case of the Ultimates line at least (let's not touch normal continuity, as they've made quite a few messes in the past 40+ years), is recreating the series. FUNi is trying to overwrite it like a VHS cassette.
