It's not so much that people hate the thought of him being a SSJ (I understand people hating the thought of him being THE original SSJ though); it's that the premise was very, very poorly executed. The entire concept of that film was terrible.ZazamPow wrote:I don't know why everyone hates Super Saiyan Bardock so much. I think it's epic, Goku's father is the original Super Saiyan. It wasn't badass to me either because of the lack of build-up, as well as setting. It was all just poorly made.

Super Saiyan God, Beerus and Whis, animation looks great.
Re: What are the good things to come out of modern DBZ?
Okay, I can see where you're coming from with that. I agree, the set-up was kind of lazy and very plot-induced, but I think the execution overall makes up for that. The special perfectly captured the tone of the series, IMO. You might say that the events leading up to Bardock's transformation were also lazy, but again, I think it's made up for by the actual fight. Bardock slamming Chilled around was just intense.fadeddreams5 wrote:It's not so much that people hate the thought of him being a SSJ; it's that the premise was very, very poorly executed. Re: What are the good things to come out of modern DBZ?
The perfect Bardock backstory to me would actually combine the premise of his two films, and a bit of Minus. I see him as a typical saiyan dog who conquered planets with his crew until, one day, he lands on a planet where he is cursed with the power of foresight. This combined with meeting Gine, a saiyan who is opposed to killing innocent people, might change him into a rebel against his own saiyan race. It could be the start of a saiyan revolution, per say, but one that is never resolved because of Frieza's interference. In a climax, he might be able to fight toe to toe against Frieza's first form due to his culminated fighting experience, but is ultimately dominated by his second form. I visualize him transforming into something like a false-SSJ after (and while) he is impaled by Frieza (as Krillin was). Afterwards, for the first time, Frieza is beaten, but Bardock collapses from his injuries before finishing him off, which leads to the destruction of Planet Vegeta. This would be a battle Frieza forever represses, which would explain his fear of SSJs.
That's just my lil' idea. >.>

Everything.
And even more the fact that we have so many good fan made manga.
Comedy, spin off, af, sequel, etc
Not everything is great, but dragon ball having new things even after 20 years is great.
It just make the universe of dragon ball bigger and better.

Re: What are the good things to come out of modern DBZ?
I'd say the best thing that has happened of modern DB is Toriyama's renewed interest in being involved in this franchise. It really seems like Evolution, and the poor job it did of adapting his story, made Toriyama actually take ownership of the series in a way that I don't believe he has done since the manga ended serialization, and I think we are better for it. Yeah, there are valid arguments against most of the new stuff he's been involved with, and I've made it public that I really don't like Dragon Ball Minus, but I think we are overall getting more good new material than bad.
Also, I'd love to see someone that enjoys Dragon Ball Minus try to answer some of the criticisms that Gaffer Tape so eloquently made in the dislikes thread. Honestly, other than "its by Toriyama" and "its funny that people are getting mad at the retcon of Bardock", I haven't truly seen any good defenses for the story.

Re: What are the good things to come out of modern DBZ?
Well... no. Being a badass is good for characters who it's good for (circular, I know). But being "badass" does not automatically make something better or even good. If Cindy Brady from The Brady Bunch was badass... well, that would be pretty funny, but it wouldn't really fit. It's something I consider a huge pet peeve when it comes to Dragon Ball fandom in particular, where fans seems to care more about how many kill counts someone has, how high their arbitrary numbers are, and how many transformations they have rather than actual characterization.ZazamPow wrote:I don't know why everyone hates Super Saiyan Bardock so much. As for Goku's father etc., etc... honestly, that makes it even worse. It's not epic. It's just ridiculous. It shrinks the universe. It saps originality. Doing prequel stuff is always an exercise in walking a very fine line, and Bardock is almost a poster child for that to begin with. He's Goku's identical ancestor who ALSO confronted Freeza. The Bardock special was cool because it managed to take that almost eye-rolling premise and not fall into ridiculous fan-service. Just look at the Star Wars prequels where EVERYTHING had to be connected: Boba Fett's dad was the template for the clones, R2-D2 hung out with Luke's mentor and his dad, Chewbacca and Yoda fought in the war together. Lucas almost even put a kid Han Solo in there. Why? Fan-service. Nevermind if the story is good or not. Fans want to see these characters do things. It ended up making it feel like less of a galaxy far, far away and more like a cul-de-sac far, far away because everybody knew everybody. And that's what happens when you go so far out of your way to contrive ridiculous circumstances (a time travel explosion?) to force a pre-established character into a role that he's otherwise unsuited for.

Yeah, and in general just having new Dragon Ball Z stuff. I also enjoy them not straying so far away from the end of the original timeline to the point where the characters just aren't interesting anymore.Zephyr wrote:Toriyama staying more true to his gag roots and shattering peoples' head canons, in these new stories, is more of a thrill than I would have expected it to be.

I would have to say that Beerus is the single best thing to happen to the franchise since 1997. I was a little wary the first time I saw him, but after seeing the movie, he's become my 3rd favorite character.

Oh and I forgot the Kai dub especially on the voice acting front. Even though I'm a bit iffy on the recasts and really don't like the overuse of tame cuss words (cussing in anime dubs are generally forced), FUNimation has shown they've come looooonnng way from when they first started dubbing DBZ.
