The general consensus by most of the writers of the big continuity focused franchise (Marvel, Star Wars, DC, etc) is that continuity is a good supplement to a story, not an end-all, be-all that has to be adhered to. If a long continuity is felt by the writers to be detrimental to character development, or just to telling the story they want to tell, then they either ignore it (like Zahn retconning Luke Skywalker having seen Mara Jade prior to the events of Return of the Jedi, and Mara's status as the "only" Emperor's Hand), wipe the old stuff clean (Crisis on Infinite Earths, Spider-Man making a deal with the Devil to annul his marriageBaggie_Saiyan wrote:I feel like some people are so bothered about continuity and consistency so much that it is stopping them from enjoying these new films, just enjoy these for what they are guys!
Continuity exists to serve the story the author wants to tell, not have a stranglehold on it.
