What if Budokai 1 bombed in 2002?

Post by Hellspawn28 » Wed Feb 04, 2015 8:21 pm

Since Budokai 1 was a big hit and help kick off modern DBZ games then I wonder how different things would be today if Budokai 1 bombed in 2002? If the game was failure then would Bandai make another game again in another five or ten years similar what happen with Final Bout or would they never make DBZ games again?

I think they'd have to make another DBZ game a little sooner than 5 years. Back then the series was just too big to stop making games all together after just one try.

Agreed. Dragon Ball Z was at the peak of its in the US popularity when Budokai 1 was originally released. There was no way in hell Budokai 2 and 3 wouldn't have happened regardless of whether Budokai 1 was as success or not. I mean, Raging Blast 1 didn't exactly shift a lot of units and got a very lukewarm reception from critics and DBZ fans alike, and yet that game got a sequel.

Raging Blast 1 came out years later though. Budokai 1 came out when DBZ was almost finish in the US and there was no new DBZ game on the home consoles since 1997. I do think things would be different if the game was a failure. I don't think Bandai would stop making DBZ games for good, maybe try again in another few years.

They would've tried again. Legacy of Goku pre-dates Budokai and it was a gigantic hit for Atari. They would've pushed a new game in a different genre or had Dimps do a followup on a lower budget. Both Dragon Ball and video game consoles were too hot back then to let one flop kill it.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

They would still go at it but instead of releasing games that are, for the most parts, a labor of love they'd only release low quality cash-in after low quality cash-in then they'd give up around 2004, when the series is past it's peak in NA.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I imagine it would have turned out the same way Yu Yu Hakusho did. Atari was obviously trying to replicate the success of DBZ Budokai when they came out with YYH Dark Tournament but that didnt do very well which is why they never made anymore.

Same with Dimps they probably tried replicating the success they'd had with the DBZ games and they did make two of them but then that was it and there was never any games afterwards.

Instead of fighting games, we would have had more RPG in the vein of Legacy of Goku.

Damn it, Budokai.
