I openly admit the idea of bringing back Freeza is not my first choice. Or second. Etc.
However, with how little we have seen of the movie, I'm willing to let my self be surprised and pleased if the idea is explored and utilized in a great way. We have no idea where the story is going to go, exactly, or what kind of ride it will be.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Fukkatsu no F"
Exactly. Saying these are bad movies is fine, but saying that Toriyama should have "creative control taken away ASAP" and tossing around words like "dangerous" and "harm" is entitled nonsense. Everyone's got the right to an opinion about the quality of these movies, but there's no objective sense in which the franchise is being "undermined" and no actual harm being done to anything. They're just making new movies that some people dislike (and other people like).KaiserNeko wrote:I'm not saying people aren't allowed criticism. It's when people make statements such as, "He's doing more harm that good." and "He should be kept away from the product at this point, it's dangerous." that come off as offensively misguided to me.
"What's best for the story" is a subjective matter, so they're basically expecting Toei et al to chose whatever they the fan personally happen to like over what's profitable, which is an unreasonable way to expect a business to behave.Saiga wrote:I think it's perfectly reasonable for a fan to want what they feel is best for the story and not what is most profitable.
Again, saying "it'd make a better story if they did X" is fine. Saying "it'd be a better story if they did X, and that's why Toei should take creative control away from Toriyama ASAP is unreasonable.

One needs to understand that Toriyama doesn't care about his series in the same way as the fans who obsess over every minute detail do.
Fans analyze every little detail to see how it fits together. He, on the other hand, really only does what he wants and what he thinks is fun. Consistency and canon are nonexistent concepts for him.

Of course it's subjective."What's best for the story" is a subjective matter, so they're basically expecting Toei et al to chose whatever they the fan personally happen to like over what's profitable, which is an unreasonable way to expect a business to behave.
But so is whether Toei should do the most profitable thing.
So is thinking it's unreasonable that Toei put profit before what they think is a good story.
"Harm" and "dangerous" are strong words, I agree. But to call them entitled nonsense is also pretty strong.
Frankly I think everyone has a right to think Toriyama stay the fuck away from the franchise just as much as they have a right to call them bad movies, or have the right to say Toei shouldn't make projects without Toriyama etc.
Which doesn't put him above criticism, and in itself could be something that warrants criticism. One needs to understand that Toriyama doesn't care about his series in the same way as the fans who obsess over every minute detail do.

Yeah, fuck Toriyama! Let's drop him and his silly movies altogether, and have Toei continue the Dragon Ball story with a sequel to DBZ.Saiga wrote:Of course it's subjective."What's best for the story" is a subjective matter, so they're basically expecting Toei et al to chose whatever they the fan personally happen to like over what's profitable, which is an unreasonable way to expect a business to behave.

...oh wait, they did that. And it's the most hated thing to come out of the franchise next to Dragon Ball Evolution. Why do we want Toriyama gone and have people from Toei have more creative control, again?

I never said Toei should do a continuation to Dragon Ball without Toriyama. That's just the opposite extreme, and personally I'd prefer not to be at either extreme end of the spectrum.

RE: Toriyama creative freedom
Did Toriyama really have all this creative freedom people are talking about? We know Torishima likes the script and I'm sure if he thought something needed to be changed he would've mentioned something? So if that is the case Toriyana had a previous editor look over his work for their opinion on it. When he's getting the editor that was supposedly the hardest to please look over his work he can't be running wild with things.

Based on interviews with him and people from Toie, yes he had full control over BOG and he probably has even more with this movie thanks to BOG' success.Sora Saiyan wrote:Did Toriyama really have all this creative freedom people are talking about?

Oh I know he had a lot of creative freedom, but I mean with this movie he turned to Torishima for his opinion, and didn't just run wild. I don't think he's just taking the series into his own hands and thinking he's done great, I actually think he's concerned whether he's done a good job or not. I should've been more clear with what I was trying to say.sintzu wrote:Based on interviews with him and people from Toie, yes he had full control over BOG and he probably has even more with this movie thanks to BOG' success.Sora Saiyan wrote:Did Toriyama really have all this creative freedom people are talking about?
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Fukkatsu no F"
i love how dbz fans allways act like they already watched the movie.
same goes when dbz game are announced.
this movie is not meant to bring something new that we have never seen in dbz.
this movie is not meant to be about the other universe(but i still hope they talk about them in the last 10 mins of the movie or so)
this movie is vegeta's chance to sh*t on freezer.
its not supposed to be some original concept and everything new and all that.
i think this is the last movie till he moves on to the other universes.
after EOZ and GT and the other movies everything that is db related will look like fanfiction.
and imo the best way to expand dbz is to bring up completly new universe like akira toriyama did.
no alternate universe or another timeline just completly new universes with new characters etc.
cuz i dont think in the 7th universe akira toriyama can suddenly show new villians out of nowhere.
cuz I'm pretty sure if he did that you gonna complain anyways.
How do freezer henchman revive him without the dragonballs?
you have to enjoy this movie as second chance for vegeta and not "oh i hope something new and original"
imo there is not enough room for originality in dbz anymore.
except if akira toriyama shows us the other universe's.
this is how i see it atleast.

But everytime he returned was only for comic purposes. His character was humiliated too many times. I think he totally deserves this. He is finally returned to his status of main villain, like he should have ever been.dbzfan7 wrote:I just hope to get across I don't think the movie will be bad at all. I think it will be an enjoyable flick. None of my gripes will overall kill my enjoyment. Even when GT bugged the crap out of me, I still had some enjoyment. I'll get a lot more out of FnF no doubt in comparison, but it doesn't change the fact some things bother me. Hells angels bother me? Just ignore past manga stuff and enjoy the simple gag at hand. Freeza coming back for the 5th damn time? Just enjoy the awesomeness of Nakao. Golden Freeza looks really dumb to me? Well the fights will still be awesome or enjoyable so whatever. Gohan and the others retelling the movie 3 side character shtick? Well that sucks, but still I'm sure the interactions and other battles will make up for that.
I have my issues, but I can put them aside to enjoy the movie. The saying is called suspension of disbelief for a reason.
I always felt that Freeza is THE real villain of the whole series and he should be the final villain, because he is so much important in terms of story (a lot more than any other villain) and his grudge against Goku and the others is very, very high (he is probably the person Goku hates the most. When fighting Cell and Bu Goku complimented them...could you imagine him doing that to Freeza?). Plus he is the natural enemy of the saiyans. And (but this is just my opinion) he is simply the best villain.
That's why I'm not interested in the multiverse or in new villains at all. No matter who he is, a new villain wouldn't be interesting, important and epic as Freeza.
Like I said in my first post, he is probably the only reason I'm hyped as hell for this movie.
In fact, in my mind the series ends with the Freeza Saga.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Fukkatsu no F"
I agree that Toriyama shouldn't necessarily have to worry about GT in his writing. But contradicting it completely could cause problems in selling the DVDs or other broadcast and licensing rights. Unlike the old movies as standalone stories, it was a direct sequel to the Z anime with a lengthy serialized story. GT is also a source of lots of unique merchandise material and video game content. If the franchise creator were to do something to discredit or contradict GT in a serious way, it could potentially have an impact on its marketability. Just look at all the debates about its canonicity we've had over the years, and the way people pick apart his Dragon Box quote, even before new content like the JSAT special started popping up.Big Momma wrote:That's another thing I don't get. So if nothing else, there are financial reasons for Toriyama to want to be respectful of GT's existence. But I suppose he's willing to retcon or alter concepts from his own manga chapters, so who knows if he'll really let it affect his creative vision.
