I was just wondering why do Funimation call Tenshinhan a different name? Is it to make him sound more western or just stupidity?

Tenshinhan is abbreviated to Ten. But since ten means 10 in english, Funi wanted to avoid confusion by calling him Tien (which is actually 10 in dutch

)

The "Ten" in Tenshinhan's name means "sky", just like the "ten" in Goten. And what about "Tien"? Tien is actually Hanyu Pinying (think of it as Chinese Romaj or Romanization) iof the same Kanji (sky). This was decided at the very start of FUNimation's DBZ dubbing since we can clearly hear Bulma saying "Tien Shinhan" in the Ocean Group dub during the first episode. As for the change from Ten to Tien, probably to avoid confusion, as said by Terra-jin.

My Japanese kanji book says the Chinese pronounciation of the symbol is "tien," although I don't know a lick of Chinese...

No, that's the Japanese pronunciation. Maybe they meant it was the "on" pronunciation of the kanji?

You know what? I started looking up my Pinyin key sheet, and holy crap! You're absolutely right! (kvon starts beating himself up.) This puts me in a position where I don't know shit about FUNimation's intention for the name change.

(Are you Chinese as well, or do you just know Chinese?)

Anyways, I'm sticking to Terra-jin's explanation. Mine's just too complicated to understand especially that I got it wrong.

XD, confusion there. I typed "T i e n" but it came out Tenshinhan, of course. The book I have has a section for the Chinese reading, also.

Tenshinhan is how us called him..

Eh? As far as I recall it's always been Tenshinhan. That spaced out name is how FUNimation's dub spelled it out. o_O The subs even use the name Tenshinhan.

I think "T-i-e-n" was introduced so his name is easier to same aloud. Also, with Ten having three eyes and at one point losing an arm, a lot of corny number jokes would come into play.

In all likelihood, the whole "T-i-e-n" spelling probably sprang from the "translated" scripts that Toei provided to FUNimation. It has been years since I looked at them, but these are the same scripts that had "Wukong," "Wufan" and "King Leptune"** for Goku, Gohan, and Kaio, repsectively, if I remember correctly. I wonder if I still have them somewhere.

* And I was half-considering the spelling "Dr. μ" at that!

** 界王 (kaiou, "king of the realm") and 海王 (kaiou, "king of the sea"/"Neptune"/"Poseidon") being homophomes as they are, this translation was probably someone's "good idea."

Well, Kaio is kind of "fishy". Thinking he was connected to the sea in some way wouldn't be that "out of the blue" (get it? "blue"? 'cause water's blue *giggle*)

I always assumed they renamed Tenshinhan because "Tenshinhan" would be (supposedly) too difficult or too long a name for the kids.
