Beerus wasn't being evil just for the sake of being evil in BOG, destruction is his job. He's not a villain, but he was the antagonist.

Re: Wasnt Beerus the BOTG villain?
Even if the Elder Kaioshin had said he was the worst "villain" to ever exist in the history of the universe, I personally wouldn't take it as a fact because the movie and guides say the opposite. I'd chalk it up to the Elder Kaioshin being grumpy that the cat stuck him in a sword for millions of years.BrolyLSSJ wrote:........Old Kai stated another statement from what's been told.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Beerus wasn't being evil just for the sake of being evil in BOG, destruction is his job. Re: Wasn't Beerus the BoG villain?
Old Kaioshin just says the guy who sealed him away was a "bad dude". Doesn't sound so different from "villain", but he's not describing a specific dramatic role, he's just saying this person was mean and lacked moral fiber. If we're trying to be exact, then Beerus' role in the storyline of BoG is probably best described as an "antagonist" rather than a "villain".
(Also, compare this with aku-yaku, the Japanese term specifically for a villainous role in a story. Gotenks actually describes his SSj3 form as making him look like an aku-yaku /villain, and says Picclo looks the same way. I believe the Simmons subtitles translated the line as Gotenks saying he looks like he "should be playing the bad guy".)

Beerus is absolutely 100% completely neutral in every way.

Re: Wasn't Beerus the BoG villain?
I agree that he's more of an antagonist than a villain, but I think maybe people are taking the light heartedness of the movie into account here? Beerus was prepared to destroy the planet at any point and was acting purely on selfish ideals, while he may not be going out of his way to achieve an evil ideal he had little to no respect for their or anyones lives. His placing on a moral scale is entirely debatable especially when viewing his role as a god of destruction, but I wouldn't completely write him off as not a villain! He was certainly the antagonist of that particular storyline.
He's begun his path to heroicness however, now that hes been infected with gokuitis that will undoubtedly make him into the reformed bad guy like Tenshinhan Piccolo Vegeta 18 and countless others in the gang

Kaio himself says that Beerus is not evil. The guy's just doing his job, which is a universal necessity. He's like Galactus in Marvel, only smaller, funnier, and a much better dancer.CordonBloo wrote:I agree that he's more of an antagonist than a villain, but I think maybe people are taking the light heartedness of the movie into account here? He's basically a humanoid version of a cat. Utterly capricious and certainly not evil.

You can't have a villain who's not evil. He's neither an anti-hero or an anti-villain, just a neutral antagonist who's just doing his job, like Rejick.

Just a random example, because I read it again yesterday, in the Infinity Crusade story, the main villain is literally the embodiment of on of the main character's goodness. Zero evil at all. She decides that evil must be eradicated, so she sets out to destroy everything that has evil, so, everything.

That's an anti-villain, not a villain. Another example are the main antagonists in Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya. They are trying to save the world from destruction, but by doing so they must kill one of the main characters. Anti-villains, not normal villains.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Sure you can.Sandubadear wrote:You can't have a villain who's not evil. Re: Wasn't Beerus the BoG villain?
In Harry Potter, Snape is a (temporary) villain but isn't truly levil since he was always on the good side. Beerus is similar. He's doing his job, he's the God of Destruction. The Kais don't like him but he isn't actually evil. And in typical Toriyama fashion he becomes an ally at the end of BoG. But for the film he is the antagonist since he is the main opponent.
From Google:
antagonist - a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary.
villain - (in a film, novel, or play) a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot.
Like Piccolo, Vegeta, Android 18, and Majiin Buu (fat), Beerus was an antagonist who later became a friend.

Would you call a taxman a villain? No?
Then Beerus is not a villan.
